‘Best’ sounds from each drum machine?

Would be interested to hear opinions on the best sounds from popular drum machines, you know — ‘the clap from the Linn Drum’, ‘the kick from an 808’ etc, want to sort through my samples and find some killer sounds for each drum instrument / percussion, and thought it might lead to some good reference points and interesting debate.

Comments

  • The hand clap. From each TR series. (Except the 606 didn't have one). That HP makes s great substitute for the kick, snare, and HHs as well. It will cover all of your percussive needs and save on memory eliminating all them other samples! 👍

  • CR-78 has some cool high pitched HH and other synthetic sounds.

  • The original Linn snare drum is the absolute best drum machine snare drum you will ever, ever find. I'll make a separate post for the rest.

The Linn kick is incredible too, with that thump with a slight click that just automatically slices through a mix with no eq necessary.

The overuse can't be held against it, the 808 is just a monster of a kick, easily the most versatile.

CR78 hihats, open and closed, are very good (as are most of the other rhythm boxes).

I always found the hihats on the 505 and 707 to be very passable and pleasant for 'real' drums.

The DMX toms have always been my fav, they have that slight pitch envelope to them that I love, but they're also semi-realistic sounding in use, as opposed to toms like the classic Simmons, which have always been a little too niche for me. The DX toms in comparison to the DMX are bland, but still effective. DMX/DX have THE worst hihats of any machine I've ever heard.

For synth drums, the Simmons SDSV is a great all-arounder and less gimmicky than the 800.

For a knockoff Linn, Drumtraks is a very solid all-arounder, and I have a personal affinity for the cheapo sounds of the Drumulator.

Every other instrument I'll just default to the Linn. The cabasas, rimshot, tambo, ride, cowbell. It's the most iconic electronic instrument ever to me.

I'll end on a negative note and venture, however unpopular the opinion, that the 909 sounds like garbage to me. All of it. No use for it.

  • @oat_phipps thanks for the extensive info, I’m sure I’ve got most if not all of these, so will check out. :)

@Blipsford_Baubie when you say ‘HP’ are you talking about the hand clap or high pass?

@1nsomniak will def check out the CR-78!

  • Oberheim DMX. Sequenced like this.

  • I like the drum sounds from the KORG iMS20. But it’s overdue for an update of its Audiobus.
Any way to pressure KORG to fix it @Michael ? Perhaps a mass email request storm from the forum :)

    funny anecdote
Kraftwerk called the management and asked we wish to know how the snare was processed, we know its a DMX, but how are the sounds processed?
