The day the desktop vs iOS gap/ debate narrows precipitously:

edited December 2018 in Other

When THIS trickles down into the next iteration of SampleTank iOS: This cookie is a MONSTER! Oh, if only the gap between ST4 and ST3 for iOS will be as narrow as Syntronik iOS vs Syntronik desktop or ST desktop vs ST iOS. What a joyful day that will be! This thing also does disk streaming.. At 250 gig for the maxed out version, IK will certainly have to shrink it down but they’re GREAT at doing that. And you can bet it’s gonna sit nice as an auv3

Part one of four..

There is no Sample Tank 3 for iOS :)
Of course i asked them about an (lighter) iOS version and the answer was of course that they planning to work on for Sample Tank iOS which is not a yes but also not a no.
I sold ST3 a while ago because of it‘s flaws but got interested in v4 but not sure if the difference would be big enough. The ST on iOS is f.e. even far far away from ST3. So i wouldnt set my hopes to high.
(And i still think things like Kontakt are much more advanced).
But yes, it would be a step forward on iOS for sure:

Oh that is a personal thing. So it wasn´t bugs or something. So "flaws" wasn´t the right word here maybe. I wanted more flexible midi routings, MPE and some other things. And while the sound for the price was really nice and a great complete package to start i bought into Kontakt and it was just much better. At the same time Logic added so much bread and butter free acoustic and synth sounds which are at least from the same quality. So i just didn´t needed it anymore.
And it was so hell slow to load sample for me from an extern SSD (but as mentioned this might be much better in v4). While i liked the engine which is kind of a flexible synth with multi-sample support and nice things like time-stretching and whatever ( i guess here v4 is also better) there isn´t any advanced scripting going on behind the wall.
The FX in v3 already were also very good but i also have them all in Logic anyway.
But i also think it would be a super package for iOS.
But from what i see in v4 the GUI really looks good. Not sure about the sound quality in general yet. The demos did not show much and the audio demos mainly show tons of keys and pianos which sound good. The strings in the demos weren´t good but here is the part i would be most interested in.
I liked what i saw about the arp and strummer. Could be really great together with some nice guitars.
I think for the pre-order starting at €99 (30GB content) is a good value in general.
IKMultimedia also offering good upgrade and crossgrade prices if you own already their products.
For me buying the entree version for €99 to just get the engine and add just the sounds i need would be a good way.
I still can´t find a list what is included or not in the 3 different versions. Which goes from 30 to 250GB.
But even loading 30GB from app store? Is that even possible to offer such big apps in the store?

Strangely enough, I still use a lot Sampletank 2.5 XL, love its sounds and fxs, there is something special about it. Not the widest sounding but fits easily in the mix with cool sound color and fxs allows for surprisingly modern and experimental sounding stuff too. I have ST3 light version from my iRig Pro IO, and I didn’t want to do the upgrade, I find its patches sounds a bit too « main stream » as is the GUI, this is less inspiring, at least for me.

  • @Cib: There isn’t now but there will be. Some of the “Pro series” instrument iap’s are really good like American Acoustic , Billy Cobham drums, etc. They really pulled out all the stops w this ST4.. And Syntronik is good too
