Turnado, FilterStation?
I was working on a track for which an Auto-Wah was needed and that led me to reading about FilterStation 2 and Turnado and am wondering about people's thoughts about their sound quality and versatility. I've seen some videos but Turnado was mostly used in an extreme way almost random way that made it hard for me to assess.
Curious what you all think.
I also noticed that Moog Filtatron is just 0.99 !
Comments
4pockets also has a dedicated Auto-Wah AU.
FilterStation 2 has one of best resonant filter available on iOS as AU plugin.. definitely
for FilterStation 2
I have both and they are both superb AU plugins - Filterstation is more specialised for your use case. In case you weren’t aware of other possible options, FabFilter has the Volcano app but I think it’s still currently only for Auria Pro - and then there is WOW2 from Sugarbytes which I think would do a great job too (without all the other stuff Turnado brings) - don’t think it’s AU though
Turnado is the most versatile, and you can just dial in one or two fx. Filterstation is good too, though obviously focused on the one effect.
That's because Turnado is made for being used in an extreme way!
Turnado is like a multi-fx powerhouse with deep and complex functionality and its biggest disadvantage is IMHO that there's no shortcut around the complex UI making it feel like a desktop plugin operated with the mouse.
In fact there is one, in the shape of a different app called Effectrix, but be warned that after more than two years, Sugar Bytes have still not managed to make it an AU.
In your case I would definitely recommend AD FilterStation 2 because it's much more straightforward to use, it has an additional built-in LFO, it's much more than just a low-pass filter and what's even more important:
It's the only app of the above that acts both as an IAA and as an AUv3 effect!
Turnado is not IAA and not Audiobus compliant anymore (no kidding!), Effectrix is not AUv3 yet, so I'd say this time the vote goes to AudioDamage.
EDITED... The information was based on my memory and not accurate for the question being asked.
@McDtracy : nice track! FS2 sounds good.
Folks: how is the quality of the individual Turnado effects?
Btw, I should have mentioned that while the search for an auto-was is what led me to read about these, my main interest now isn’t using these for that purpose but for other things (I found a great Audulus envelope follower that serves as a nice auto-wash).
So, my main interest is knowing whether these are worthwhile tools if one cares about audio quality, doesn’t mind a learning curve.
(FWIW: I recently got Turnado)
Surprising good considering that one instance uses <10% CPU on an Air 1 at 512ms buffer. That's with 8 simultaneous effects with a ton of built-in modulation. I'd say it's slightly darker sounding than most single effect processors, not quite as pristine, but in a mix it's not noticeable. It definitely has excellent soundstage width and depth. It's not as easy to use since a bit of diving is required to access the effect modules.
I've used the Apesoft/Amazing Noises and Audio Damage apps on iOS and desktop for years, especially love Dedalus and Replicant, but just surfing through Turnado's presets I'm hearing lots of similar sounds. (I put off getting any Sugar Bytes for some reason, maybe the dubstep association?).
Each of the 8 blocks can host one of 24 different effect modules. Each one has multiple modulation options as well as the global Dictator which can control everything. Everything can be automated. It can do subtle too.
Turnado. On sale for $12... you know you want it!
Beside the excellent FSU aspect, it can behave and be a very good “normal” effect chain, including auto-wah and other filtering.
If only I could do that, probably get much more use out of it...unfortunately I seem subconsciously obligated to stack up four of the craziest presets I can find every time and then wonder why it’s so hard to control. 😁
Going to force myself to do it at least once.
@McDtracy cool track and filter demo!
EDIT: I need to delete my comment. That track was created with DubStation and ApeFilter for FX creating the Wah and NOT FilterStation. But that idea is kind of what Turnado provides in a single App. Multiple FX and a lot of LFO automations.
I bought it but haven't put in the effort to use it and the Presets didn't grab me but if your interested in putting in the effort it's probably will yield better results that you feel you own.
@McDtracy nice, that’s one less app I need to buy for now anyways... no need to delete that comment, just edit, it’s still a good demo of those other apps instead.
Here’s the track I made going ham on Turnado,

To be honest I usually do the same - crazy time
Since it’s been AU though, I’ve pulled it back a bit. Last night for example I just had a looper going with a STREEMUR input, and the Dictator slider gives a nice visual representation of what’s going on if you’re using multiple fx.
WOW2 is still on sale too. It’s super good and worth it even though no auv3 (hopefully yet). I don’t know why I waited so long to get it.
