Are you happy with ios7?

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but searching the forum, I can't find out if the issues have been worked out. Are you happy with your upgrade? I've got an iPad 3, an akai Eie, an apogee one, recording mostly in Auria or MT Daw. I've been using it in a live situation with a midi keyboard, usually only running a couple of synths, sometimes a synth and effect through audiobus. I'd like to be able to do all of this and install a painting app that's ios7 only! And I can't decide whether or not it's worth the risk, so I'm asking you all to tell me yes or no :) ....thanks for your help.

  • I have been updated to iOS7 on an ipad3 for about a month now. I don't use auria or MT daw, but so far haven't had any issues with any of my synths. Actually I think my ipad sped up a bit after a few tweaks (bkgrnd app refresh turned off, etc)

My iphone4 however hasn't liked the update very much

  • Ipad 2 here with no issues.

  • iPhone 5 with A6 32 bit, 1gb ram, system - No issues really. I'm happy with it here. :)

iPad Air with A7 64 bit, 1gb ram, system - Nothing but issues really. I don't think a tablet can get more unstable then this. Apple gotta pull some really fluffy magic rabbits out that hat to fix this mess in iOS 7.1. :(

iPad 2 with A5 32 bit, 512mb ram, system - Works ok considering. Lots and lots of apps got gimped on iOS 7, getting by the issues with raw CPU power. iPad 2 falls behind here. Noticeable in apps like Auria and the editing screen with its very detailed waveforms.

  • No issues with it on my iphone5 and iPad Air here. The only slight problem is the flakiness of IAA. And I hate the new stock calendar app, but otherwise smooth sailing here.

  • Definite issues on iPad Air for me but not as bad as they were on iPad 2. These issues all relate to apps crashing and Audiobus and IAA not working as expected. On iOS 6.x I only had issues due to memory strain but iOS 7 has made stuff not work properly!

  • No significant issues for me on iPad4, mini-retina, and iPhone5s.

  • My issues with my Air are more to do with Safari crashing frequently. Audiobus apps seem reasonably stable.

  • Was ios6 more stable, yes.

Can I work with ios7, yes with some workarounds

I'm ok with upgrading, but say zero issues would be a lie. Ipad mini retina 64gb using Cubasis (quite flaky now), Auria (quite slow main screen now), various synths which generally work (like the reported inability to play polyphonic notes from iSEM). Sone issues might not be because of ios7 but they have only manifested since ios7.

Still I can get my music done... Just avoid the things which cause workflow issues ;)

  • Thanks for your help everyone - it seems crazy that there's issues even on the newest ipad! I have seen some things on the net about clean installs, did anyone go that route?

  • It seems that especially the latest (64 bit)devices have (Memory)problems. Most annoying is the sluggish edit screen in auria (it's pratically useless for me as it is now)but anything else is mostly fine or is directly related to IAA.I don't have any problems with iSEM for example (iPad4).But the edit screen problem with Auria has nothing to do with iOS7 using more CPU or so (i can't confirm this).Rim said its an issue in iOS7."Apple broke the way the scrollview works".I did not regret the iOS7 (it was not a clean install) update but of course i hope i can soon use auria again in the way i'm used to.

  • I did notice that drum jam stopped outputting audio after upgrading to ios7. Still haven't reinstalled to try n fix. Anyone else have that issue?

  • The problem s trying to assess the stability of the iOS given the different hardware and apps thrown in the mix. To be totally fair, I think the only way to do so would be by comparing Apple apps that aren't iOS7 only (if those even exist.). Other than that, you have different levels of understanding of the new iOS across all the 3rd party devs, along with different hardware, which would make it impossible to compare apples to apples.

  • That's the first I've heard of that, @uglykidmoe. DrumJam has an update on the verge of release, but the current version should still work fine on ios7. But at this point you may as well wait until the update to try again.

  • Thanks for the info @sonosaurus I figured it was an anomoly

  • I have an Air and I haven't had too many issues, but there have been a few. Forgetting about what @Michael_R_Grant said about Safari (which is totally valid since safari crashes and insane amount of times for me now - didn't notice the crashing on my 2 if it was there after the upgrade to iOS7, so I honestly think that's isolated to the Air or 64 bit devices). That being said I do get really strange midi problems sometimes where everything starts outputting a strange digital noise. I'm positive these setups worked fine on my iPad 2, and I can recreate the issue with certain configurations pretty consistently. Again, I don't know how much of that is iOS7 and how much is the 64bit processor. I really haven't had any other issues reported. The scroll window even still works fine (way better than iPad2) for me in Auria. Anyway, overall I'm happy with the upgrade but I'm sympathetic to all the reported issues. I don't use that many apps honestly, so I'm not a great test subject.

  • Ipad air here and its a glitch fest, am using IAA a lot though and I think this is the main issue. Especially problematic when unplugging the headphones or CCK connecting to midi controller or audio interface....

Hopefully its in Apple's plans to update this extremely buggy code.....

  • iPad Air and only a few problems. Safari crashes unexpectedly. I tried playing my bass through Midimorphosis and iFretless Bass and kept getting rapid high frequency bleeps with every note I played until I moved the tracking slider all the way to the right. That cleared the bleeps but there was so much latency that it got frustrating after a couple of minutes.

  • I'm still on 6.1.3 on both iPad 3 and 4, waiting for more stability.

  • I think I'm going to wait too - it'll kill me if it interferes with making music! :D

  • I am also quite happy with iOS 7 on my iPhone 5. Started with 6 & delayed updating because of all the handwringing I was reading about online. Everything works so well that if an app glitches I blame it on the app.

  • Just upgraded my ipad4 to ios7 on New Year's Day. Haven't had the time to really put it thru tests - but so far no issues. I've only opened Loopy, Thor, Electrify Nxt, and the Aufx fx apps. Hope to test some more synths and apps this weekend.

  • Has anyone using the Alesis ioDock/ iPad 3 upgraded to iOS 7? If so, any issues to report?

  • iPad2 w/ IOS7 here. Not really noticing much of a difference except apps seems to take a little longer to launch.

  • Still have not updated and won't until I get another Ipad and they work the bugs out. 6.1 works great on my iPad mini so I am going with if it ain't broke don't fix it. That and it takes up 3 gigs of space I really can not spare? Out of curiosity how much space does 6.1 take up and will I gain that back after changing to ios7???

  • @Brain... Yes, might as well blame the apps, those lazy developers neglecting to release updates every time Apple screws the OS up :-)

It seems to me that the music based apps are those which suffer the worst. For some reason Apple tinkers with the OS and the production stuff gets the kick. I could be wrong. Probably. Possibly. But I have a feeling the new AB is going to help a great deal...
