On MacBook - au or vst?

Hello friends. I’m going to load a synth plugin on my MacBook. Always used vst’s on windows but I note that some plugins come in both flavors for Mac. Is conventional wisdom still to use AU when possible. Thanks!

Depends on the 'Host' you're planning to use.
For example Logic Pro X is AU-Only. Renoise does both VST & AU and I guess the same goes for Live...

  • Depends on the program you’re using them in. I use AUs exclusively to save HD space.
I mostly use Logic, Mainstage and Hosting AU (free micro DAW) which all use AUs exclusively. I also occasionally use Ableton Live lite which uses both AUs and VST and very occasionally Reason lite which only uses VST so no big deal there.

    I hope that helps!

  • Thanks @Samu and @Yowza. I didn’t know it was host specific. I’ll be loading the plugin in Maschine so I guess I need to look in that direction. Cheers!

Depends. I use only AUs because i use Logic but otherwise i would prefer VST.
No midi out for AU, but VST can do it.
Also if you f.e. want to share a project from a DAW to someone with the same tools on a windows device also VST is better.

  • Ok, did some more digging and seems that in Maschine most folk recommend using vst’s. Thanks for your input folk.

  • Here is Ableton's take on AU or VST (as mentioned above by Cib)

    AU or VST?

Live on Mac supports both the Audio Unit (AU) and VST formats. Which format you choose to use is up to you, bearing in mind the following tips:

If sharing projects with Windows users, it's better to use VSTs. If the other user also has that plug-in installed they should be able to open the project. See our recommendations for transferring Live projects.
Some AU plug-ins may have different preset handling than the VST, or vice versa. See our article on AU preset handling.
AU plug-ins do not support a direct MIDI out. If you wish to route MIDI from a plug-in you need to use the VST version instead. See this article for info on how to access the MIDI outputs of a plug-in.
Avoid using the AU and VST versions of the same plug-in in a Live set. Mixing AU and VST versions of different plug-ins should not be a problem however.

  • I only use AU here, even for Maschine. Works fine, no issues.
