Digitone: Anyone have one?
Tell me about it.
Like many Elektron products the uses and videos are wide and varying.
I usually find our little community to be helpful, informed, and easy to relate to.
What are you using it for?
I guess the question I ask myself is this, is almost $800 for an FM synth worth it?
I mean, a Volca FM is like $150. I know, way different.
But, what makes the Digitone special?
I guess when you talk Digitone, I consider the alternative is grabbing a Neutron and Model D from Behringer for less money?
Not FM, I know.
But getting best bang for buck is a real concern for most.
So, I would love to hear about how the Digitone has such value versus its price point?
I am looking to potentially buy one but am digging into the research on this one now......
Thank you.

before there was digitize there was...
Will you be using the Digitone’s sequencer, particularly with other gear? If not, and you’re mainly interested in an FM synth, have you looked at the Yamaha ReFace DX?
do you happen to own that DX200 groovebox ?
it was a recently added to Patchbase, which might help a lot with it

I’m not an expert so take this for what it’s worth. It reminds me of having the sounds of a bunch if ice gear synths in a box. The FM synthesis is implemented very well and really easy to wrap my head around. The sequencer is amazing. It plays really well my Digitakt.
Necessary? Not at all. But it’s one of my favorite synths, hard or soft.
IMO it's fun box but it's not worth the asking price.
You can get more out of DT sequencing Phasemaker or KQ Dx.
But less is more sometimes.
Came across this Digitone Jam recently and had to share. Some fantastic sounds coming out of it here. That Bass!
Miles also has some great Digitone tutorials on his channel. Worth checking out if you're at all interested in the Digitone:
I’ve been hanging out with my digitone a lot these days!
Running it thru ios effects and sampling into koala is quite fun.
Also the sequencer is way more wild that i originally thought it was when i first got it.
I was mostly using it to create samples, but now I’m actually using the sequencer.
Probably my favorite instrument that I own, followed up by the OP1 field and of course the iPad
Got the Digitone Keys, probably the heaviest 3-octave keyboard out there 😅
While its sound engine feels somewhat limited (and I've spent quite some time with it), the sequencer and control is great when used with other gear - currently Digitakt, Volca FM2, Microfreak and Alesis D4 (that setup changes frequently though).
Worth mentioning that each of the 4 MIDI tracks has 8-voice polyphony.
Mani bet that thing is heavy! I always thought it would be awkward since the digitone controls are to the left of the keys instead of above the keybed like most synths…. How is it to work with???
I was really struggling with the FM sound engine, and still am too some degree🤣 but i grabbed a couple preset packs from 2 different people, so i could use them obviously and study them… and that really made think differently about the synth…and got me to start using the thing again after a few months of collecting dust.
Its definitely powerful as a MIDI controller!
I was very close to buying the new DN2 but opted for the MiniFreak from Arturia instead. While the DN2 would be an amazing upgrade for its new machines and more MIDI capabilities, i really just wanted a bigger synth with less menu diving… and the resale for the DN is like 400$ , and not really worth selling to take a 400$ loss!
I'm a right-handed guy and tweaking a knob while playing is no problem.
The Digitakt stands to the left of it and for tweaking sounds, I'd rather have a sequence playing anyway.
It's built like a tank and it feels like one. I like it a lot and I don't feel like ever getting a DN instead!
Its short depth is also quite handy when stacking more gear behind it (Volca FM and soon a blofeld).
I also grabbed a few preset packs and distilled my favorites into one bank, these are my starting points whenever I like to do some kind of sound design. I used to reverse-engineer sounds with a spectrum analyzer at hand while tweaking FM parameters but I stopped doing this, it really eats too much time and I'm waiting for a developer who makes an AI based utility that does the FM sound programming. That exists for Dexed (The DX7 clone) but not for the DN yet.
The MiniFreak is a great choice for sure, I bet you'll get much more sound variety out of it than from a DN2.
There's also an incredible list of presets available for it.
Yah, i am thinking the MF is going to be a lot more diverse in sound and programming will be much more “traditional” programming methods than the DN and FM operators. I mostly use the DN for percussive arps / brassy bass, and FM drums, the envelope is so snappy and the sequencer is as you know, great for that kinda thing.
You are right reverse engineering FM patches is a time hog lol hopefully we will get an ai for that! The random per page on the DN isn’t terrible but its random so lol..
Dig that the DN keys is shallow that probably makes it nice for arranging your synth synth set up!
