Does Nanostudio2 Slate have multiple BANKS- if so how many?

Or can multiple Slates be loaded into seperate Tracks?
Thanks in advance

  • There appears to be no limit to the number of Slate instances you can run on separate tracks at a time. With some MIDI routing, you should be able to sequence multiple Slate tracks from one MIDI track.

For what it's worth, the MIDI timing for unquantized recording in Nanostudio 2 is superior to BM3 in my experience.

    1 Slate == 1 Bank (32 pads)
you can load as much slate instances in your project as you want, there is no limit (other than memory of your iPad :)) (1 track == 1 slate)

This image demostrates project with 5 track, Slate loaded on each track, and those 5 tracks are then grouped together into "Slate group" track (so you can apply global FX to output from all slates) .. you can create many levels of such grouping ..

And in order to keep things 'tidy' it's possible to add 'Track Lanes'.

I've not yet found a way to 'split' the notes recorded using 'Slate' to separate tracks other than doing it manually.
But for house-keeping it's nice to record the different elements to their own track lanes.
(Maybe some day each 'Track Lane' will also get its own mixer-channel for added flexibility?).

I might try to do a custom track where a 'Slate' controls 16 Obsidians or something like that...
(This since it's not possible to automate the tuning of Slate Pads).

Ok cheers thanks everyone @Samu Is the swing factor ok? I ask you as I know you go deep with the beats is swing 0 to 100% And is swing global only?

I've not found any 'global' swing setting meaning each pattern has to be swung individually and there is no audible 'swing preview' when applying quantise but the events move when adjusting swing so its commit, preview, commit, preview. I do hope this will get 'fixed' at some point...

@Samu the global swing setting can be found if you tap the timeline
controls at the top and then the "record" tab:

It only affects the 'recording' it's not possible to 'live swing' existing recordings :)

Isn't more of a non-destructive quantize that is applied on existing recordings? Like the quantize in GarageBand and Auria Pro?

(edit) No, it seems you're right, it only applies when recording. Shame.

As far as I've tested it 'burns in' all the quantise values that are either recorded or fixed in the editor after recording.
I've not seen any trace of the quantise being 'non-destructive' like the one present in GarageBand.

Only way I've found to 'undo' quantise is to use the 'undo' functionality or revert to a saved project.

I'm not a 'NS2 Guru' yet so I may be wrong here :)

@samu thanks for info No live quantize swing leaves me bit surprised
Is the swing impressive though like Bm3? I know Iam being bit choosy Iam actually going to download it

i found "destructive" lot more usefull - i apply some groove and then i manually tweak few notes... it's always easy to go back by siply
    applying quantisation without swing

it's a bit similiar workflow like with MIDI fx - also those wants everybody record into track (at least from what i read) instead of use them "non destructive" way - in realtime ...

btw "audio" realtime feedback during tweaking quantisation params in part editor is on todo list

i think quantisation/swing is a much better implemented in NS2... just look samu’s first screenshot from part editor - you have all quantisation timings as buttons, don’t need to use that left/right arrows like in bm3, there is more settings, you can apply quantisation not just to note start but also note length or note end, swing slider can go above 50% and at the end you have at least visual feedback how will be notes changed after you apply quantisation - which you don’t see in BM3 at all ;)

Your BM3 assessment is way off. You get a lot of things incorrect when it comes to BM3 from almost all your posts about the app.

@hansjbs which things i wrote above are not true ? correct me please if i’m wrong, maybe i’m missing something,... i was comparing these two things:

even from screenshots is very clear that quantisation is far away more advanced in NS2 (of course again if there is hidden somewhere in bm3 something more which i did not found, feel free to correct me)

@dendy @hansjbs iam a Bm3 dude but have to agree with dendy on this Visually better

  • @dendy as We are here Quick question?
Can patterns and pattern notes be copy&pasted to other tracks in song/arrangement editor?

  • @stormbeats thanks, i thought i did miss something in BM3, went to double check it after @hansjbs post..

The fact that you say it’s far more advance is one thing and because you prefer NS2 doesn’t make BM3 any less of an app. It’s a preference and workflow thing. I like BM3 way more than NS2, I actually don’t see what all the hype with NS2 is about but that’s only my view of things and because I prefer BM3 workflow. I will not say BM3 is far more advance than NS2 because it’s only my opinion. BM3 and you did not click, cool. You were turned off by it. This is why I believe your assessment with BM3 is way off and why I made the comment above. I won’t make a statement like that about NS2 because it might turn off someone else interested in buying the app.

yeah of course :) you can copy/paste notes frm one part (patterns are in ns2 called “parts”) to another part

in track view, you can duplicate parts and dragndrop them between tracks (or move them using drag handles)

there are also “linked” copies of parts - this means if you change notes in any one of linked copies, notes are changed in all of them - of course you can any linked copy freely move to any other track and it is still linked..

you can also unlink any linked copy and then do note changes inside - those changes do not affects other linked copies obviously :)

btw here is complete manual, if you have some time i suggest you check it, it’s written very well ;)
    https://www.blipinteractive.co.uk/nanostudio2/user-manual/index.html

before you buy NS it is good idea to go through manual - because you use now BM3 - to avoid later disappointment.. lot things are different in NS2 - i mean different by desing, intentionally, some features which you probably use in BM3 are not there, few of them would be probably never added (like per pad AUfx - very unlikely), other will be added later ...

It's very different app ;) Both apps have cons and pros, it depends on your workflow and needs ...

You can of course use both of them (NS2 supports LINK so syncing both of them together is easy) :-)

I was only talking about his feelings towards BM3 not the visuals. The way I use BM3 it doesn’t matter if quantise was like NS2 or as BM3 is currently. Like I said different workflow for different folks

  • I guess I’m just tired of seeing this BM3 vs NS2 thing. 2 different apps made by 2 different developers who worked very hard on each project. I apologize.

Can you do End note quantize in BM3? or Strength? I don't see it.

  • @dendy ok thanks for info
