Korg iPolySix

I’ve had this synth forever and had the impression it was good but after loading it up yesterday after a couple years unused it seems pretty dull. Am I doing something wrong or has its time just passed?

Side trivia: back in the day I sold a real PolySix to a guy named Potatoehead John for $300.

Comments

  • iPolySix itself still sounds great IMO, but like all other KORG apps, it would benefit greatly from an AUv3 update and other modern features like preset import/backup.

  • This thread needs more potato heads. That is all.

  • @1nsomniak recently I saw a tutorial video describing iPoly6 as (among other things) a 6-lane drum machine (or melodic sequencer and anything in between) which rekindled my interest 100% in the app. That may be common knowledge to existing users but I had no idea previously and am super excited to dive in.

  • @Proppa sounds familiar I think iMS-20 is set up in a similar way where multiple synths can become a drum machine.

I’ll keep it around for now, maybe my ears were tired.

  • I know what you mean @1nsomniak. I don’t think it sounds BAD, but I do think the newest generation of apps have more raw power and sparkle, and seem more alive. It sounds a bit muffled and less dynamic by comparison to my ears. Less inspiring.

Super interested in checking out alternative ways to use these apps like you mentioned @Proppa. That should give some of these aging apps something to keep them busy in their retirement 😉

  • I like the sound. To my ears it sounds pretty nice and vintagey. However, like alot of my apps it's one of those that I haven't spent enough time with.

btw - @1nsomniak I'm still laughing over potatoe head Joe. HAHAHA

  • I really like the original and this clone. Truly 80 sound. I do not feel that it is outdated.

I was considering giving it another go. But i've been focusing on iMS-20
Still great, but could be better with some workflow/tech improvements

@1nsomniak do you have or tried out iMono/Poly, to compare with iPolysix's sound?

  • FWIW, when I was reading people's comments about the various Korg synths when first getting into iOS music apps about six months ago, I noticed that a number of people felt like iMono/Poly and OdysseI were more satisfying sounding than polysix.

I don't have iPolySix so I can't compare, but I find iMono/Poly and Odyssei quite satisfying.

  • I think that PolySix is a vastly underrated synth. It's the standard lack of interconnectivity with Korg apps that kill me - I'd love this as an AUv3. Once I see those pigs flying, I know that we'll be close to release on that update....

I think the PolySix is in the 'Timeless' camp given you've loved music made with it at any point - i.e.: it may not be the sweetest of pastries but it's one that won't entail a sugar-rush crash either sonically speaking.

Increasingly I'm a sucker for super synthesized drums so it's the 6 sequencer lanes in one app that's the big "heck yes" for me on this one.

    +1

  • I loaded this up last night after reading the thread, and getting fed up with Aparillo.

Sounded absolutely lovely - really warm and rich. Shame it’s been abandoned by Korg (needs better MIDI connectivity amongst other things) because it’s a great sounding synth.

we‘re still waiting for Korg to deliver LINK for both of these apps (iPolysix and iMS20) ...
all their sequencing abilities would be so much more useful.

  • It doesn’t have that modern sparkle. Indeed, it sounds remarkably like a polysix.

MIDI was good in iMS-20 with my old MS-20c USB controller, I have just sold that controller due to me giving up hope that AU or decent sync options other than WIST will ever emerge...

I don't think they ever added midi sync to iMS-20 did they?

It's more the lack of MIDI AU and Link doo-dah capabilities that bother me. You don't get the nice connection box in AUM when you load it in, like more up to date apps, so it's a bit of a fanny-about to try and assign a particular channel to it. AU would be useful too since it's not a massive CPU hog.

As I said though it sounds great to my ears. I loaded up a preset, tweaked it slightly and had a lovely warm rich sound in a few seconds. Reminded me I should use ot more often.

Yeah, still one of the best emulations, like iPolysix...I think the fact newer synth apps tend to have more FX and more Presets with lots of FX, particularly reverb, on them that they can give the impression that these older apps don't sound as good.

    I agree with this.

  • Same here. Love to listen to a good dry sound. Makes you admire how good the synth is

  • Lately I've been digging in to DRC. Turn off everything and just listen to the oscillator(s) and it's really enlightening and pretty marvelous. I must do the same with all of my synths.
