  • @BroCoast Trafos FTW. But seriously, I suspect it’s got a lot to do with the size: aren’t most DI trafos quite large? Seems like it’s wise to see what can be done in a smaller form factor for applications like audio interfaces, or to just stay out of that game and let users rely on separate boxes if they want that kind of circuit.

@Telefunky My experience with hardware and recording is way too limited to have a strong opinion on this. I notice enough of a difference with the stuff I use to prefer running through my DI first. But I won’t argue that it’s the kind of difference that mixing skills can’t more than make up for.

  • @ohwell that's perfectly ok if you notice whatever difference - it depends on your gear and your environment. There are so many variations possible.

    It depends.

The xformers in something like the REDDI are big but most simple passive DI's have quite small ones that will easily fit in the standard small interface box.

Overall it probably makes sense to keep these things separate and just hype up some JFET, but I've always dreamt of such a unit. If the Burl B2 ADC can have xformers then I feel like we can have a 2 channel class compliant interface with a truly "high end" input.

    Not class compliant so no.

    Ask yourself these questions:
    1. Do you call your guitar an axe?
    2. Do you think a seven string guitar (or axe) is a good idea?
    3. Does "best in class tone" mean anything in real life?

NOTE: These sour grapes come from years of humiliation in guitar stores all up and down the East Coast until, in the words of D Boon, punk rock saved my life.

Related? Playing a guitar with a nickle (or even two of them) will just ruin it. Playing it with a dime (by moving your hand really quickly over a string with dime's ridges perpendicular to the string your playing) will create the magic lead guitar sound from Radiohead's House of Cards. The dime's position on the string sets the note, not your fret hand. See 2:35:
