OT: My Dad's iPad
So my father has witnessed the wonder of my Air2, and now he wants an iPad. Basically, he'll watch Netflix and play Monument Valley and so forth on it. I'd suggest a refurbished Air 2 (found one for around $220 on Amazon). He wondered why he couldn't get an iPad 3 for $140.
I didn't have a good answer.
What is the cheapest model he can get away with?
Comments
Air 2. Getting really cheap on U.K Gumtree now. Saw a 16 gig for £150.00 today, & a 128 gig for £200.00. Bargains really for what is still a great machine.
Ipad 3 is only 32 bit. Air 1 is the first 64 bit, along with the mini 2.........
iPad 3 is stuck at max. iOS 9.3, iPad 4 at max. 10.3.
Playing iPad games and watching Netflix both require an up-to-date iOS version so the useful minimum would be an Air 1 I guess. If he won't load many different games on it then 32GB should be enough storage.
Well if you want your dad to still have a good user experience then don't get anything prior to the ipad air. Also make sure the ios system is 9 or lower (if you go the with a ipad 3 or 4( not recommended). A refurbished Air 2 for 220 seems good but you can get a brand new
Apple 9.7" iPad (Early 2018, 128GB, Wi-Fi Only, Gold) for $399 at most places. Just kick dad 200 bucks along with the 220 his going to spend. Plus you never know about the battery life on used ipad. Would really suck to have dad buy a pos and have to then buy again. Better to spend a little more and get something that has not been fingered by another man/women.
I'd consider getting him a Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet for $149.
There are cheaper versions. That's the Biggest one.
It will do everything he probably needs and he can pick on you for wasting money on Apples expensive products just to look cool.
Then when he calls for tech support you can say "I don't have one of those (yet)". Tech support for family is kind of a pain in my experience so giving them something you don't have really helps.
Then if you covet toys make the case to get one to support his questions or not and let him figure it out.
(And you can test Android Music apps on it to see if they are getting closer and slip us clues).
