  • I wonder what stability issues iSpark has?
What do I have to do to make it crash?
Also, I cannot confirm the bad sync, it syncs quite well to external MIDI clock, starts instantly and it's one of the few apps that supports up to six velocity layers per pad and it can actually sample!!
I've found the app's pad velocity mode more precise than playing on the actual hardware.
It's a bummer though that the pads cannot be played polyphonically in the sequencer, that makes it remain a good but "just" a drums workstation.

  • @stormbeats To nudge the notes, go to the SEQ section, select pad you want to edit, and Shift is at the bottom of the Automation parameters. Similar to how Stagelight does it.

    Ok cheers

From what I've gathered over the years from folks here, Arturia isn't really into keeping up development on their apps. They seem to drop them and them drop them, as it were.

Development of iSpark was outsourced....the dev was keen to fix issues and develop the app further but Arturia seemingly weren't.

  • @ksound said:
I used to have the hope that they would open up the synthesis of their classic drum machines, as they did on the desktop version.

They did initially say this was going to happen...but it didn't :(

Your right. It wasn't developed by Arturia, only financed by them. Maybe they decided there was no money to be made in ios and pulled the plug on any future development? It was one of the first 64 bit apps, & i had to buy an iPad air 2 (second-hand) just so that i could use it. That was the moment my iPad four became frozen in time, & more or less obsolete. I didn't know that 32 & 64 bit was going to be a thing, had i known i wouln't have bought the iPad 4 in the first place. The joys of being new to a platform!
In regards to iSpark, the biggest omission is the lack of midi out. That would make it possible to control the desktop version via an iPad.........shame that it's never going to happen.........c'est la vie.......

This is a pattern with Arturia. I heard the same from the Retronyms team as well - they wanted to update and fix iProphet and iMini but Arturia wasn't. I loved me some Arturia products until I saw how many apps were only 75% functional with no fixes in sight.

The biggest problem here is that their apps in concept and sound are great! iProphet sound INCREDIBLE, and iSpark is a handful of fixes away from being one of the best stand=alone drum machines on the iPad. But in their current state....

  • Anyone else unable to redownload the IAPs for this app?

  • Yep. Recently re-downloaded and was faced with the same message. Deleted again. I’m happy with BeatHawk/Egoist/Playbeat for drums until Sugar Bytes bring Drumcomputer to iOS.

  • Interesting. I didn't even know there's an expansion store :D

Not heard of Drumcomputer - interesting :)

  • I say this every time this thread is resurrected - iSpark had SO much potential.

    If only it worked.

Works here. Standalone and IAA loaded in AUM, plays and stops in sync, follows tempo changes and even MIDI clock - what's the problem?

Really? You're able to restore your IAPs?! How do you do it?

Like I wrote, I didn't even know about the IAPs, got too many samples already and the app itself works well here. @Daveypoo's comment sounded like the app itself didn't work.

I've been having some weirdness with this app myself recently - so I'm glad to find this thread, as it had been driving me mad and I couldn't work out if I was doing something wrong or it was the app.

I've been trying to use it in Logic via IDAM to mixed results; I've had it working really well and it's also been misbehaving quite badly.

Sometimes it's been great - rock solid with no latency, and sometimes it won't even play over MIDI.

I've had it playing my beats programmed in the piano roll in Logic - and then it decides it would rather play its own pattern. Even though I can see Logic is still playing the notes of my beats in the piano roll! And the app is showing that it's still receiving external MIDI notes! What the hell?!

It did something else weird too, which I can't remember right now.

I guess it needs to be filed under 'dead apps' and I need to stop trying to use it... which is a pity cos it's a great sounding app!

  • @rs2000 I had a number of problems with it. IAA would lose the connection a lot, sync'ing would lag on me, start/stop would start at the beginning of the song, kits wouldn't save properly (file corruption)... it's been quite a while since I fired it up last, but I had nothing but frustrations with it.

I fired iSpark in favor of Beathawk, which I subsequently retired in favor of Digistix Drummer.

I just lament that I experienced so many bugs/issues as this app had TONS of potential and did a lot right.

Was going into my old apps folder and forgot about this - was the first app I purchased on iOS.

Yep, bought the hardware (SparkLE) because of this app.. Don’t need much of an update.. A Studio (Sampler) update, time stretch, etc. could make it a killer app in 2019..

Edit.. Conditional Triggers would be nice too..😎

i bought spark LE too only for this purpose. But what a disappointment it was to realize the light of the pads never showed the correct status of the steps. It was just a useless lightshow.Even more disappointing was that this needed to be fixed on the firmware side of spark LE (according to ispark dev tempo rubato/Rolf Wöhrmann) and arturia clearly said to me: we won‘t fix it if not enough user complain about it.Shame!
I mean, they even made promo vids with this combination,it was advertised to use them together.
End of story,I sold spark LE long time ago

That was the day when i promised to never buy something from arturia again.Well,at least on the software side i was strong ;)

Tip of the icing,iSpark never run reliable in Cubasis.Such a nice software but what a shame it never got the deserved polishment...

  • edited February 2020

I've only tried with AUM, BM3 and apeMatrix so far.
Cubasis indeed won't work as it cannot load the IAA Generator version, only the IAA Instrument of iSpark which is rather pointless.

Never noticed the lights issue... Must admit it has a unique sound and recently discovered the power of NKS (Maschine), which makes it even more unique.

Noticed the Store shutdown... pretty sure it will be back...

I think the APP is better than the hardware... I wish it controlled the software...

What I do in Cubasis is create an audio track .. go to routing and where it says mono change that to Inter App Audio .. choose iSpark .. then start recording it, then while it’s recording I just change the patterns as needed in iSpark. iSpark is synced up to the timing of Cubasis and starts and stops with Cubasis’s play control. Only issue as with all IAA is there is no state saving, but it actually forces me to come up with something good first time around instead of saying to myself “I’ll come back later and improve my drum part” kinda like the old tape recording days .. you got something printed decent before you left the studio.

To the others having stability issues with iSpark .. I had issues too back when I was using my iPad Air 1st generation pad, but on my 2nd gen iPad Pro’s running IOS 11/12/13 it’s pretty stable.

  • Not a fan of companies who contract out development work but don’t think about future support when the project is done. Arturia does this along with Waldorf, which is why you don’t see Nave updates either. The Nave au plugin still doesnt work with catalina, so I’m down the $180 I paid for it. Its ridiculous.

Didn’t know this. That sucks. Nave is still one of the seminal iOS synths.

Iam the OP of the thread. Seems we all like iSpark but its bugs etc are a let down. I had many issues where my samples would not reload with a project. Anyone else? Or any improvements with iOS 13. I doubt.
