Cubasis and mixer hardware (output)

Hello guys how yall doing?
Has anyone ever tried routing Cubasis tracks to a mixer board?
If yes were you able to route for example track 1 to the interfaces track 1?
Thanks in advance for answers

  • I can confirm that it's possible when using a class-compliant 8-channel USB interface.

I'm connecting both the audio interface and a MIDI controller with faders to the iPad via a powered USB hub.

Before I go into detail: Do you own a camera connection kit? If so, is it the CCK3 (the USB3 version with an additional female Lightning port)?
Or do you own a an iPad dock?
    What about your audio interface?
Or are you using a mixer that already has a multichannel usb audio interface on board?
    If so, which one?

This is the connection kit I have.
For th audio interface, I have behringer u-phobia um2.but I want to change it because i get some pretty bad background hiss in my recordings.
I have no mixer and would love some advice in regards to mixers and audio interface.
I have an iPad Pro 10.6

    OK.
I own a Zoom UAC-8. It's one of the few 8-channel audio and MIDI interfaces that is USB class complient and compatible with iOS. It can record and play on all channels simultaneously, but I don't use an external mixer because I'm fine with what's in Cubasis and Audio Evolution, and for more advanced mixdowns I'm switching to Win/Mac anyway.
I'm sure others will chime in and report about other options.

Okk thanks a lot will give it a look.so you just connected it straight to camera kit and then choose it the Cubasis settings as you would with any other interface right?

Yes. On the Zoom i have to make sure it's switched to "Class Compliant Mode" on the back panel. Cubasis will then show the outputs selectable in pairs of 2 channels and the inputs as either mono or stereo channels. 9/10 is the S/PDIF digital output.

  • The Apogee Duet 2 (2 ins) for iPad and Apogee One (1 in) for iPad also work in any audio host including cubasis and have a mixer app also. They're also very portable and the One even can be powered by batteries. You also get great DAC as a bonus for when you're mixing.

This is a bit of a wide open question, as a mixing desk’s roll can be very different whether it’s in a studio or a live venue. Perhaps you could talk about what it is you are looking to achieve.

Thanks a lot..but is it possible to send mono outs?or just pairs?
And if only pairs,do you have to pan the outputs?

Hello there.thanks for the reply .
Let’s say I’d like to send Cubasis tracks To a studio mixer board and also record audio from the analog board into Cubasis is that possible?and can the mixer control Cubasis faders?just curious since we have some nice boards at the uni studios and would like to get the vocals from the live rooms into Cubasis

  • edited January 2019

First, I guess that what shows up in the iOS DAW is the way the audio input and output channels are presented by CoreAudio. Unless there's some remapping feature available (in Cubasis it doesn't seem to exist), yes, you'd have to pan track L/R to output 10 different tracks to different channels.
And yes, most modern interfaces are capable of full-duplex operation so indeed you can send a few tracks to the mixer board while recording on audio inputs like from the mixer Master bus, from Aux send, external gear etc.

AFAIK Cubasis never had remote control support so I guess you'd have to find a better DAW for that, if you really need remote control of an iPad app that is ;)

Thanks so the brilliant explanation.i was just curious about the remote control.i like the touch Daw that physically hardware.

It helps understanding you are working in a recording environment.
Since it seems you are working with installed desks, what you need to be looking at are interfaces. First question is how many live mics/instruments do you need to record simultaneously. @Paa89 mentioned his 8 channel, but for adding a vocal you may be fine with 2in/2out. Outside of the interface you’ll just need a handle of analog cables to patch into the desk.
As @rs2000 mentioned, Cubasis does not support remote control. That said, you’ll be looking at setting track levels from the iPad for the vocalist to monitor, so probably only 2 outs needed from your interface.
And just to throw this out - I’d have to presume that these studios may be set up with a DAW already... Cubasis can export stems, which could be loaded to the house DAW for tracking, and the resulting new tracks exported back to Cubasis when done.... I just mention this because most Studio DAWs are probably tweaked out for the lowest latency possible (not to mention already patched and routed) which depending on your Cubasis project and iPad may be problematically high when dealing with live tracks.

Yes. For the iPad I use the Apogee Duet 2 for iPad. It’s lovely. Fits in a backpack and I even use it with a battery pack on the road. Also, if I wanna go extremely light I use a Lewitt DGT 640 mic that works great on the iPad.

In terms of ‘controlling’ Cubasis. Faders. Nope. Transport (play/stop/record). Nope. I hate this about Cubasis. It seems intentional to strip it down and separate it from its Pc/Mac counterpart. Even Beatmaker 3 has HUI and Machine Control functionality. Maybe This is possible in Auria Pro, I personally haven’t tried it yet.

These days I would recommend skipping the physical faders part altogether honestly. In the desktop studio world a lot of studios are adopting the Slate Raven which essentially turns your Mac/PC into a multi-touch screen like the iPad for controlling the faders lol.

Thanks a lot for the info.the first reason I bought the iPad is because of the touchscreen, instead of having to use a mouse.so the hardware controll was just a curiosity (an extra if they add that possibility).
What is the sound quality like in regards to the interface and mic you use ?

Thank for the detailed reply.the studios have logic and pro Tools installed and obviously everything is already patched.
The have audio interfaces connected to the boards and and additional cable if someone wants to use personal computer.
But unfortunately the cables are Thunderbolts , so no luck to test with the iPad (unless there is an adapter from thunderbolt to nomal usb, I could connect to the camera kit; but haven’t found one yet).
So I was curious to know if there were other ways to get mic signals from the boards i to cubasis..

  • Thanks a lot guys for all the info.i think my best option is to have a word with the uni studio tech.he will definitely have some other useful info.
    Thanks once again
