iPad Live Gig Setup Suggestions
Hello there, I'm starting a new project with a friend of mine, it's an electronic ambient\drone\noise\dream-pop duo.
He has many hardware things, I sold everything and now I have only my iPad for synths, sequencer, drum machine and loops.
I should recive tempo and clock from him and send the same to him.
-How can I sync via midi in\out with him?
And the most important:
-How can I plug my ipad to speakers?
Thank you!
PS: I have an iPad 4 (retina)

Many hardware things, may require something like iConnect Midi if the hardware is midi capable. Best route for connecting ipad to speakers is a audio interface, and depending on how many devices you need to connect, you might look into a audio interface that has multiple midi inputs. That would solve your midi and speaker connection issue.

Sorry about double post. Hit quote while trying to edit.
@mgmg4871 Do you have any suggestion for an audio interface? Actually I'm using irig PRO, it's good, but it's only mono, and it doesn't have midi out.
Can I connect Ipad with an audio interface with iConnectmidi2?
I use the 16 bit version of Akai EIE (the red one) and can be used for PC also. 24 bit version does not work with ipad. It has a USB in for ipad or PC, and 3 midi inputs, 4 audio inputs, 4 audio outputs, and 4 audio inserts. I guess theoretically you could use iconnectmidi2 with audio interface via Powerered USB hub, but not positive.
How is the sound quality of the 16 bit converter of the Akai?
It's a shame that the 24 version doesn't work with iPad. I really like the features of this audio interface
iConnectivy answered me that iConnectmidi2 doesn't work with audio interfaces.
The 1/6 bit version sounds great, actually. I don't really require 24 bit for my purposes. You might look at the Focusrite Scarlett also.
I've used the Focusrite 18i20 on stage with my ipad.
Works great.
@thelongrays the 18i20 is a little bit out of my budget, I want to spend around 150 max 200 euros.
Check out the new NI Traktor Audio2
What about the roland duo capture ex? It's stereo in/out (1/4 inch and xlr) plus midi in and out.

@Tarekith it doesn't have midi in\out!
PS:
I the the jack output of the ipad so shitty?
@paradiddle I'd tryed the roland duo capture in the shop and it didn't work in anyway with my ipad
@dramatis it's funny that they say it does. Thanks for the info.
Focusrite 2i4 might do the job.
@paradiddle, I tried it in october, the released a firmware update in november!
Do you have any info about the duration of the battery in a live situation?

@Dramatispersona13: if you have a Mac, it is possible to create an "Aggregated Device" (IConnectMidi2+ and the AudioInterface of your choice together). I haven't tried (still waiting for the CM4+), but this should work. I also run my pads into the Motu Ultralite Interface, which is connected to my Mac (for FX and routing to Quadchannels), the Motu isn't class-compliant though, and cannot be used with just a pad... . Been looking into the Focusrite 18i20 also, seems great.
Definitely the 18i20, I use one at work. Mostly connected ot the Mac, but I tried it with some success connected to the iPad too. For my purposes its stand-alone monitor mixes is a significant plus.
I've been in the same boat, right down to the genre. I got the EiE. Haven't gigged it yet, and I'm still a bit confused how to run a stereo signal out. Anyway, I'd like to hear your music if you feel like posting it.
Maybe I found a cheap way! I think it can be useful for you too.
With a lightning to USB connector I'll send and receive midi to my master keyboard (arturia keylab), and I'll use the midi in/out of my keyboard to send midi signal everywhere and receive midi signal from other sources.
I tried in this way connecting my keyboard via USB to my PC and my iPad with Irig PRO with my keyboard. I'd used thesys PC demo and it worked with all of my iPad synths.
I should buy a lightning to USB adapter!
I would like to do something similar:
Ps:
I bought the iPad because I don't want to use a PC/mac for making music anymore! The apogee quartet is awesome, but I prefer burn 1200 euros for a new guitar or a new synth
Iconnectmidi can be a cool way for connecting my iPad to my friend Mac, but actually he wants to use only hardware, maybe in a future I'll buy one of iconnectivity products.
The 18i20 is another good beast, but it's out of budget and it has many many features that I think I'll never use.
If only the EiE Pro worked with iPad...

So do you think the Roland UA-22 works on IOS7? Or can you confirm? Mine works a treat on IOS6, afraid to update!
Thanks!
@Gerjandh
I don't know if it can actually work with iOS7. I'd tried it in october, and it didn't work with iOS7.
I have had the Duo Capture EX since it's release and it has worked flawlessly for audio (both inputs) on both my iPad 3 and iPad air. I have not tested midi input yet. There's a 44.1/48 toggle switch on the back settings, needs to be set 48 for iPad.
48? Really? If you are running AudioBus you need the hardware set to 44.1 (unless the switch is being over-ridden somehow then).
Thanks for the quick response.
@MoonWolf
Also the Ipad 3 is on IOS7? What apps do you use?
@gerjandh, sorry I disappeared! Not sure how, but I just dropped off the thread. I primarily use Midimorphosis with the interface, plus Amplitube into Loopy HD via AB. @dwarman, I'm pretty sure it's 48, but I'm rehearsing tonight and will double check.
Here's an image, see the 44.1 for computer and 48 for tab. If it's set to 44.1, the ipad won't recognize it as a compatible device.
That's a three way switch - 44.1 and 48 are both designed for use with a computer, TAB for an iPad.
I can confirm my UA22 is working with iOS7 on my Air (audio and MIDI into Cubasis). It needs a power supply or batteries though...
The reason I'm surprised is AudioBus only supports 44.1. I have an ADAT line input box with a broken rate selector that only syncs up to my Focusrite at 48K. But then AudioBus cant handle it. Maybe what is happening here is that the switch setting needs to be 48 for the Class driver to see it, but then AudioBus (or CoreAudio when called on) can successfully downrate it. That box has no digital I/O so the switch would only be for apps that do not have code for selecting their sample rate. Does the TAB setting work?
Center (48) and tab both work for me. 44.1 does not.
