Ad-hoc wifi with iOS?

Is there a way to set up ad hoc wifi between an iPad 2 (iOS 10) and two later model iDevices?

I am using the iPad 2 as a control surface (Tc-data or ThumbJam ) sending MIDI to a recent iPad. At home I use Network session to connect them. The iPad 2 doesn't have the right Bluetooth to do MIDI over Bluetooth.

I am trying to figure out a solution for when I am not home.

I also have an iPhone in case that is any help.

You can enable "Personal Hotspot" on any of the devices if one of them has a cellular connection, that will turn it into a full access point / router.

(at least that used to be the case last time I used it that way, like in iOS 7 ;))

Thanks. I didn't realize that would permit communication between two iPads that are connected to that phone.

  • My old trusty iPhone 4 actually used to be my main WiFi router for a time and yes, communication between "unrelated" devices on the Personal Hotspot wasn't a problem, albeit not very fast.
