Leaving iPad Pro plugged in?
My music rig 10.5 is connected to usb3 lightning, so it can be on charge while in use. I'm always paranoid about overcharging the battery. I know it's not supposed to happen, but the battery in my first Air stopped holding a charge for very long, and i worried that I contributed to this.
What is the latest opinion of leaving an iPad plugged in?

Battery in iPad cannot be overcharged. It automatically stops charging when battery is fully charged.
But, actually partial charging (not fully discharged, charing in area between 20% to 80% of battery status) is actually GOOD for LION batteries, particulary when they are new - it prolongs battery life![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
So having you battery constantly fully charged actually shortens it's lifespan![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

When plugged while making music at different times the draw will be more, equal or less than recharge. This means that rather than a straight recharge or discharge curve it will actually be a zigzag which stresses the battery.
Occasional complete discharge is recommended but mostly to recalibrate the battery software with the hardware.
This is only my idea so take it with a pinch of salt but you could do worse than checking:

Best to turn the iPad off unplugged than to leave it plugged in and turned on. Letting the battery drain to zero periodically and then giving it a full charge is also good for long term battery health. When I’m doing a session with apps running and screen on I’ll often leave it plugged in, but for the most part I utilise the power switch for energy conservation.

common myth, originates from acid batteries
Read article i pasted above ![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
btw. far away worst thing for battery are not charging cycles but extreme temperatures - both extreme hot and extreme cold (hot not cause by running apps but more cause by hot enviroment - like leave your ipad / iphpne in car during hot summer or cold winter is really really bad idea)
if i good remember it's also good, if you have plan not use device for longer time, leave it not fully charged but also not fully discharged - somewhere in between .. although cannot found source of this information so verify it just to be sure, i may be wrong with this one ..
Recently there have been a few people reporting their ipads not showing 100%,on full charge but high 90s. Letting the battery drain to below 50% and then recharging to full rectifies this. How do you explain this other than software recalibration?
@supadom aah sorry, i wanted to quote just LucidMusicInc in relation to that myth, i wanted ASK you for source of your information![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I was reacting particular on myth that complete charging cycles are good for batttery - in reallity exact opposite is true when it comes to lion batteries..
That's a very old myth from the very early days of Li-Ion batteries and bad/cheap chargers. Just forget about it and leave it plugged in.
Yes, I think we’re talking about the ‘memory effect’ which indeed applies to older type of rechargeable batteries.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Yeah I was interested in this because recently my Air 2 battery has stopped keeping charge and can only reliably work on power supply. Apple tested it online and said the battery needs replacing.... £97
It's had 670 cycles, thought they were good for much more than that. But obviously after 500 charges it gets iffy.
Does anyone recommend any aftermarket battery replacement, or just going with Apple? I read that they often just replace for a different ipad, but not sure if I'd want that.
I recently had some Bluetooth trouble with my first gen iPad Pro and the genius at the bar ran a diagnostic and said my battery now only charges to 70% of its original capacity. The batteries are not replaceable, so for the price of a battery ($129 CDN) they just give me a new first gen iPad Pro. It seems like an insane business practice to me - I wondered why they wouldn’t make the batteries replaceable, but I guess in 4 years they’ve released two new models and expected I would upgrade.
