USB DC block to power Akai MPK49

I just bought an Akai MPK49 to use as a controller for my Virus TI2. I've been reading that if powered via USB by a computer, the midi in/out ports become controlled by the computer and its DAW. What if I power it via a USB cable plugged into a DC power supply that has a USB port? Will the MPK still not send general midi signal out of its midi out port to an external device? I am on the road on the way to a gig hours away and am now afraid I won't be able to do what I've always done with cheaper m-audio and Alesis basic midi keyboards in the past. Thanks for your input!
