Echo Pad new Shimmer Reverb comparison to boutique pedals

Echo Pad v1.7 update is out now which includes 2 new presets, "Shimmer Reverb 1 & 2". These presets achieve the sought after Shimmer Reverb effect normally found only in pricey guitar pedals.

Check out how Echo Pad compares to the two guitar pedals demo'ed below, both of which cost a few hundred bucks.

Thanks. I had a user send me the second video requesting to emulate it as closely as possible in Echo Pad, because using Echo Pad's Shimmer effect on it's own is too "granular sounding".

After watching that video and listening closely, I was able to quickly whip up those two presets in Echo Pad to get a very accurate emulation, and emailed them to him a few minutes later. He was thrilled because apparently there is nothing available on Mac,PC, or iOS that can achieve that effect.

This is actually not a new audio engine upgrade, but rather utilizing what has always been there. I still surprise myself with what's possible with Echo Pad when you get creative. :)

  • Well you got at least one extra sale through it!

  • Always wondered how to get that sound :)

No need to wonder anymore, just tap that preset ;)

For those that are interested in how I created it from scratch in Echo Pad:

    • turn on Shimmer in the FX menu
    • adjust Reverb Level to 100%
    • adjust Reverb Decay around 90-100%
    • adjust Echo Pad's master FX wet/dry level to about 20% (slider located at the very top center of the screen)
    • long press the blue control ring to open Echo Pad's additional delay parameters panel
    • adjust Feedback around 70%
    • adjust Delay Time to 225ms
    • adjust Delay Mix to 100%

I also turned on Stereo Delay, Multi-tap 1&2, and Multi-tap 3&4 for these particular presets, but you can experiment with and without those extra delay taps turned on.

You can also tweak it more by fine tuning the delay repeat filter using the red control ring, adjust tape tone, etc.

  • Sweet! Nice effect! Anyone else think it odd that the Strymon is active when bypass is lit???

This app is getting better and better, since the day one.
A Lot of work from the dev, a lot of love you can see behind it.
    Many, many thanks.

Very cool, love the Strymon stuff. Wondering if any one here has had success accessing midi on a Strymon pedal (?). I have a timeline and möbius too and would love to find a way to use my iPad (4) to control those pedals using touchOSC or Lemur. There is a great YouTube video of touch OSC controlling a timeline.

My problem is I don't have a midi out on the apogee duet. Also, I don't think the timeline receives clock. Anyways, way off topic. Your updates are endlessly awesome and continuing to inspire new ideas HM, thanks for that!!

Funjunkie, it's odd, yes. Their effects run in stereo is a cream dream, much like echo pad.

  • C'mon Will... An Echo Pad thread is not complete without a deserved @Syrupcore leg-hump! ;)

  • Fucking A! And to think that was there the whole time. Absolutely leg hump worthy.

Can you explain the shimmer effect itself a bit @holdernessmedia? It's like pitch shifted delays... but not.

  • I tried to make a sound like this Sunday night but did it by recording a guitar track and then doubling it with the same guitar part via MIDI Morphis->Thumbjam Mellotron Strings -> Aufx-dub almost all wet with delay time being swept via LFO. Sounds cool but this is actually what I was going for - I didn't even realize there were dedicated 'shimmer' reverb pedals for this effect! I normally do stuff like it with multiple 80s delays (again with their delay time being modulated). And now I have it on my iPad at the tap of a button. Epic. Thank you!

  • I like the shimmer effect, but I get some glitches whit both apps I have tried it: iSEM and Animoog...
    I'll test it deeper tomorrow.

  • What echo pad is making me ignore. Have I mentioned that I really like delays?

What model iPad are you using? If you experience serious glitches please message here so I can help sort it out. Holderness Media Support

You're welcome! As soon as time permits I will make a few more variations of the Shimmer Reverb presets, probably will get them into the next update.

The image will only show tiny for me but I recognize some of it, is that a Delta Lab unit and a Space Echo I see in there? I'm honored to indirectly deliver dust to those units, haha! :)

  • Yep, Effectron II and a space echo. DEX something or other just below the Effectron. Basically the same device. Fixed delay points with +/- adjustments and modulation on the delay. Plus an extra out of phase output.

  • Just bumping because this app is special.

Crazy how great this app has become. My goto for the effects slot.

And these Shimmer presets are just gorgeous. They've already inspired the current track I'm working on.

Cheers for all the awesome updates Chris.

Inspiring someone to make music is what it's all about. Thanks man, puts a smile on my face!

  • Hey guys, just wanted to comment on here to say thank you for making this wonderful app. It's one of a kind. My bandmate has a Strymon timeline so we fiddled around with some settings on the Echo pad and did some comparisons, and he said for an app it is pretty freaking amazing. I use an acoustic and just couldn't justify getting an expensive Strymon for it just yet, so this app was a great way for me to try out effects and I'm so pleased with it.

One thing a lot of musicians just beginning to foray into IOS music apps would really look forward to seeing is some demo vids of how to use Echo Pad in a live application / performance. Like with blue tooth pedal controllers or something so I can switch effects on stage, setup recommendations, etc. That would be awesome! Again, thank you. :)

  • Just curious how these Echo Pad presets differ from your Shimmer app? I own both but haven't had an opportunity to play with them yet.

  • @suckerpunchkid - Thanks, glad you're loving Echo Pad!
Have you seen my latest app Crystalline?

@Coloobar - Crystalline is a dedicated shimmer effects processor based on the shimmer effect in Echo Pad but with even better sound quality and much more powerful. There are 16 different pitch shifted delay modes (more will be added in updates) with independent left and right channel engines for creating unique stereo effects, multiple output modes including stereo tremolo, cross feedback, etc.

I am planning to make more videos on connecting and using hardware with the iPad as soon as I have time. You can subscribe to my youtube channel if you'd like to catch those when I post them.
