Why are app developers so unreasonable?

  • You’ve probably seen this darkly comic image. The donkey must be thinking- sigh... stupid humans, always want moar! We have all been that donkey. Don’t be that guy overloading him. Straws can break a camel’s back, but usually the spirit breaks first.

I’d never develop audio apps for iOS if I was a developer. Price ceilings for the effort are way to low and unsustainable, plus the maintenance and expected free updates for new features which is unheard of on desktop. Plus the endless stream of complaints if you dare put your app on sale. We as users have been a touch ungrateful. I can tell most of the iOS audio developers are doing this out of pure love. For me, you developers have made balancing family, getting outside and music much easier...Thanks.

Can you also tell that most of us aren’t complaining about any of that?

  • I dunno. I had to read it twice and then I got it. For me kind of clever and fun. It is a foible shared by some, I think. I returned an app today it was ( gasp!) Mitosynth. Yes, the only being ever to dump MS. And why? No midi out! Whereas lots of folks only buy Au I only buy midi out cause it is such an integral part of my newly discovered workflow.

But the point of this story is that I got a response from Apple Support in under an hour with a refund agreed to. I wrote back with much thanks and described a little about the iOS scene and its relation to Apple ( yes, I know, I'm a lonely old man sitting in a moldy windowless room in Istanbul with nothing better to do with my life, blah blah) Well, I got a surprising big thank you back saying how hard this person works to help people solve their problems and how rare it is for someone to show any appreciation and what it means to her ( yes, I know, Apple is named for its biblical serpentine nature, unworthy of any praise, and way too profitable, blah blah).

So why is that? Why do consumers often disappreciate or nonappreciate those who offer usually very good service
(segueing to devs and the subject at hand here). Too busy? Too entitled? Too unconscious? I think the OP expressed something in a satirical playful way. Maybe he is even the model for his own scenario. If this shoe fits with a bite maybe some of us are wearing it and should ease it off for a flip flop. Group hug sounds good if we let the devs in.

I thought it was funny and spot on. Judging by the other responses I think you may be in the minority this time.

Not from where I'm sitting, I completely agree with @ExAsperis99 - this is a trolling thread and should be closed. It's stuff like this, not people having an opinion on an app they've spent money on that's ruining this forum.

Sorry but this is rubbish. It is a trolling thread only because you have interpreted it that way and responded as such.

Where did I criticise people having an opinion? You are entitled (that word again) to an opinion. You are not entitled to expect others to share it though.

To expect somebody to respect your opinions you should also be accepting of theirs.

Thank you. :-) Obviously not too clever though or nobody would have taken offense. ;-)

Only when they’ve finished adding the features I want.

Well, it's not rubbish - it's my opinion, so you either accept that or you don't.

    See my reply above.

What's this thing with 'entitlement' you keep blathering on about?

This is a forum where people come and discuss apps, and the music they make with them. They big them up when they're good - and say how wonderful they are, and when they're bad (and yes, believe it or not, sometimes they are) they criticise them.

Why is this good? Because it's balanced, people looking to buy a particular app can get unbiased feedback and make an informed decision on whether to buy it or not.

Otherwise it's just a sycophantic love-in, and that's no use to man or fish.

  • Touché @Klownshed. Stick to your guns, tho you might be banned for itchy trigger fingers. If that happens @michael drops by and gaffer tapes your index fingers together. And btw, welcome!

  • @MonzoPro, this occasional dev rant one way or the other is just part of the fun, no? The once in awhile riling thread is part of the balance, too, I think. I've been provocative a bit myself. You take a chance and usually someone has a problem, but I have taken each chastisement in stride. You are an amazing fellow, Monzo. But we all have stuff that gets under our eyelids.
I'm for balance, too. That includes a little imbalance as well, IMO, and some good natured fun poking. I think that is where the OP is coming from. Anyway, I only want midi out on every app I buy.
Is that too much to ask?

  • Though I share the OP's sentiment (and thought it was a funny post), I agree that this is basically trolling. Let's not. Closing this one.
