I feel the looping part can be expanded, so happy to accept ideas to improve this.

Obviously have not played with it yet, but one thing that’s really nice with a midi looping setup I’ve built in Reaper is the idea that: Set buffer length (like 2 bars), let it loop and replace (not overdub) constantly in the background, jam out grooves and when you get one you like THEN you hit a button to playback what you just recorded... it’s the exact opposite of a priori looping ideas. It’s the same idea as the “look ahead looper” thread about audio.

As an aside, for anyone that likes midi looping, you MUST check out the vst Circlys from RaxnTrax http://www.raxntrax.com/circlys/

I worked with him a while ago to beef up the midi learn control and it’s an absolute stunning way to record midi and then more importantly mangle the midi by being able to set start/stop/offset of the tracks, etc. it’s amazing how you can record a few tracks to it then shift a track a few beats back or forward and end up with a totally different idea/feel.

I’d love to see Photon head in that direction, but I think that may be beyond the scope of what Tony’s going for with this... But if not I’d recommend doing some playtime with Circlys to maybe “borrow” some ideas. 😜

Yeah price is £4.99 for 1 week rising to £5.99 after that if all ok
Its in Review - so will be today.
It was reviewed & accepted by Apple yesterday but I pulled it because of a bug with trim I needed to fix.

  • Happy for your product release! I have not really dove into the midi sequencing plugin universe, but this one has me very intrigued. Congrats!

  • very cool thanks @midiSequencer said:

  • @midiSequencer I'm excited for this. Quantum really led me in different directions, and I'm eager to see how this affects my standard workflow. That said, where will this live in AUM? It's a midi plugin, yes? But you wouldn't want to load individual Photons in their own channels for each instrument you want to record, would you? Or would you? Is this on a different bus?
Intrigued and prepared to ask a lot of dumb questions.

  • When you get the app first things to be aware of are:
    a) Only DAWs that support multiple channels (eg AUM) can use individual outputs - so stick to Thru to start with (it includes all input + Pads)
    b) The Show button displays the buffers - this reveals the Edit button to allow you to trim/crop etc. Crop for example needs you to drag out a rectangle on the display
    c) Grooves can be really simple - simplist is one note followed by a rest - so use Step recording to create exactly the groove pattern you want (press REST to have input record as a rest say or you can move the song pointer).
    d) Recording workflow (after inputs setup) is set how it starts (tap text under Rec button), Rec button, play something & you will see it recording, stretching the buffer as it does. Use Fold to make it more visible. Press Rec button again to stop. Save you file, then share it

Will add these to the manual.

In AUM add this to its own channel - you then have all of AUM inputs to record (keyboard, Quantum, etc).
Add synths in other AUM channels and use @Ch1,@Ch2 etc or @thru (there is a button in Photon to allow individual outs).

As a recorder this just sits somewhere in your chain so you only need 1 AU. Photon has 4 playbacks in one instance, so not sure you need more Photons, but its possible.

  • With the beta once I realized Photon records everything on all MIDI channels and plays it back on the channel that it was recorded on, I found the easiest way to set it up was to record all midi into it at once. I use the MIDI through for Photon output as well for the same reason. I was originally trying to overcomplicate the setup and playback with AUM routing everywhere until I realized it records everything on all channels and plays it back correctly channelized.

  • The Midi Echo AU also has me curious as to what it sounds like in practice. Are there any videos demoing it? I don’t see any on the YouTube’s.

  • So I'm guessing that's a 'not today'

  • It’s live, and it’s fantastic!!!

  • @midiSequencer it looks really nice actually. and plays nice too. sorry about that.

  • Great stuff now time to read the manual so I know what I’m doing !

  • very cool. will it be available on iphone soon?

  • Wow, that sure makes time fly by! Very nice job on this - it is going to be a favorite.

Keep an eye on this thread.

  • I can’t get the knob behavior to change by “just tapping the title in the app” as the manual says. Rotary knob action drives me nuts. :#

[edit] nvm. I was tapping multiple times expecting some kind of visual indication of the change. I bet I’m going to be accidentally changing that often. Not a good UI design choice IMO.

  • We need a video now I think to show us how it all works.

  • Two questions after playing around with it just a little bit:

    1. I loaded some pattern into Pad1. I then closed AUM. When I returned later and opened previous session, there was nothing on the Pad. I would have expected this to be saved with the state, but it doesn’t seem to be the case?
    2. How do I do real time recording of a backbeat pattern, that when played back in a Pad stays in synch say with a Rozeta drum pattern also played in AUM. No matter what I do Photon seems always to start at the beat.. Somehow it should be possible to do a recording that is aligned with start of bar, but begins with a rest, without having to step record?

Im doing some videos soon for Photon & Polythemus, so will include MidiEcho.
Midiecho is like the Quantum midi echo fx, it sends repeated notes out after defined delays with settings for pitch & volume & muting.
Unlike the Quantum version this one supports realtime echoes(quantum is step based) and individual echo mutes(eg you set a delay of 0ms and mutes on some echoes to create chords).

yep I agree, but the Settings app stopped working for me so I picked a quick solution. I need to make this more visible than having an invisible button! That applies to the making Hide & MidiFiles buttons more obvious
