Ableton LINK Sync : Start/Stop (sagas and stories)

What is your set up with LINK in the mix?

I find that there is some odd issues as of late with LINK start stop.

As in one day, it works with this app and then next not.

To be more specific, here is how I am currently attempting this.

I have Ableton as the actual main clock. But, I don't have consistent success with START/STOP and iOS apps.

This includes using the apps, LOOPY HD, AUM, and AUDIOBUS.

I have hardware synced to Ableton as well via USB.

I assumed that LINK with ABLETON as the "master" would make this the closest to perfect sync engine for the apps.

But no. I have tried all settings on the apps and some days it works, some it doesn't.

What is your best sync start/stop with Ableton set up to have and keep things synced?

Regards!

  • I'm 98% sure that enabling external sync (top left of screen EXT button) will disable Link. Might be something to check?

  • I guess I don't know why would that help sync everything with LINK?

Is that indicating Ableton is listening for sync?

I assumed with that setting and pressing play MacBook Ableton sends out LINK start signal that AUM, AB, and LOOPY should all start then together?

Maybe I have this all wrong.

    Thanks

I just looked in the manual, the EXT button won't be visible unless Live is being controlled by an external source. There might be a clue here..

Also every app including Ableton will have to have start/stop enabled in the settings, it's off by default. Hope this helps!

  • Wow.

So Ableton itself can be the start stop for others only the actual BPM and "slave" essentially?

I have hardware all in Ableton for this reason so they are all nice and synced.

Then comes the iOS adventures daily for them playing nice.

    I will investigate this.

    Thanks

Aha.... I've been wondering how ( if ? ) Ableton Link Stop / Start works

I've just tried using Live on my MacBook to start various iPhone apps.

Loopy and Samplebot seem to work perfectly - there is an option to enable Link Start / Stop ( thanks @Michael :D )

I've also tried Vatanator SX, AUM, Thumbjam and Drumjam on the iPhone and I can't see the option to turn on Link Start/Stop - so nothing happens. I could be just being blind of course ;)

Will check out apps on iPad in a mo.

  • Cool! Yeah, not all apps have implemented it. Audiobus works as a bridge though so anything hosted in Audiobus will also get the start and stop

Thanks for that Michael. Audiobus to the rescue again!

I've just noticed that on my iPhone SE Samplebot does not seem to Start/Stop playing in the background even when play in background is turned on - also the Link device count goes down by one when Samplebot goes to the background.

EDIT: Hmm.. now it is working in the background... weird. I had Loopy running as well the first time. I quit Loopy, just ran Samplebot for a bit, then Samplebot started playing in BG. I reopened Loopy and all is working.

MIDI Clock. Simple as that. If you know in advance that Ableton should be the master then why would you use LINK at all?? Loopy HD syncs great to MIDI Clock.
