USB to MIDI question
Ok this is probably a "newbie" question, but here goes...
I am using an M-Audio Keyrig 49 as my keayboard controller. It works great with all my keyboard apps (Sampleltank, Galileo, Mellotron, Garageband etc...) but only over CCK. I now have an Alesis iODock, which I love for everything else I do, but it doesn't have USB input, only MIDI. Since the Keyrig sends MIDI over USB can I use something like the M-Audio USB MIDIsport to convert the USB MIDI signal to standard 5 Pin for the Alesis?
Thanks for any responses to this!

I'd just get a USB to MIDI cable in that situation.
Not trivial, you'll have to hack into the dock a bit, bit it has been done and documented:
http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2013/01/03/alesis-io-dock-hack-adds-an-internal-usb-hub/
Can't use a USB to MIDI cable; IO Dock does not have a type A host USB port intrinsically.
Unless you do the hack I just posted the reference for.
[bad info]
@dwarman Hmmm....I was hoping to avoid hacking into the Dock. Won't a converter do the job?
Got it! So I better start studying that video it seems.....
oh oh oh...
You're right @dwarman. @jg707 the Keyrig is powered by USB which means even a USB to Midi wouldn't work because the keyrig wouldn't be receiving any power.
I don't recommend the hack unless you're familiar with modifying electronics. There are a number of ways this hack could make your ioDock a big paperweight.
On the bright side, an old midi controller can be found for like 50 bucks, and that would certainly do the trick. (M-audio oxygen 8 25-key can be found for like 30-50 bucks on ebay/amazon)
I think you're right @uglykidmoe, I don't want to risk the iODock. I just really like the Keyrig and hoping there was an easy way...of course, nothing is as easy as it seems at first glance!
It's interesting to see you guys mention hardware I'm using. :-) As has been mentioned, an M-Audio MidiSport 1x1 to M-Audio Oxygen 8 25-key works great! As an added benefit, the Oxgen 8 that I have runs on batteries. A complete solution! :-)
@Audiojunkie - how are you connecting the Midisport with the Oxygen 8. It looks like the both have B type USB connections, or is the version of Oxygen 8 you have with the 5pin Din for Midi out? There seem to be a number of versions of the Oxygen 8 25key.
I assume you connect the Midisport USB to a CCK, yes?
@Ganthofer Yes on both accounts. :-) I have a version 1 Oxygen 8 with the 5pin Din for Midi out, and connect my Midisport Uno 1x1 USB via CCK. :-) The Oxygen 8 can run on batteries, giving me a nice portable solution. :-)
I guess I should clarify that I'm using the Midisport "Uno" 1x1.... There apparently is another Midisport 1x1 that is totally different from my "Uno".
@audiojunkie it's funny how I have (for midi keyboard controllers) a keyrig, an analog factory keyboard, a novation x-station, and a korg kp-250 with fully weighted keys, and I still - from time to time - miss my oxy8. It was such a useful little controller, and they seem to never break. the encoders feel pretty nice as well. sigh Gotta use what you got I suppose...
@uglykidmoe It's funny how you mention how they never break! Haha! I bought mine over 12 years ago, but a couple of keys started acting up shortly after buying it. By the time I got around to taking it back to the store, the replacement period and warranty had already expired. I just kept it sitting around with very little use until a few months ago when I got around to trying to diagnose my key problem on my Ensoniq ESQ-1. I found some YouTube videos on cleaning the contacts on midi keyboards, and figured I had nothing to lose. I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it like the instructions said, and now it works like new! In all honesty, it IS new! It's almost never been used, even though it's over 12 years old! :-) Anyway, I figure The problem I had must have been a fluke, since they were so successful that they are on their third generation of Oxygens now. :-)
does a pair of usb a to b cables and an a to a usb adapter would solve the conection matter of a USB MIDI keyboard and io dock?
The Alesis iodock USB connection is not a USB host, so it only works to connect to a PC USB host connection.
Nope ,but you can mod it ,or give it to someone who can
Two cck's and a hub.(For Each.)
What do you mean?
Sorry, faulty wording, thought about interconnecting two idevices and a keyboard, cheers.
