Hive Mind: Live Performance Edition - AUM, multiple devices, MIDI & Audio routing

First of all, some background - I'm a fiddler and I like to sing. Currently my favorite way to produce in iOS is using AUM and ModStep with other MIDI tools. I've been thinking about taking some of my creations live for some time, but was unsure about what kind of gear I needed to make that work.

I came to the realization yesterday that I'm due for a phone upgrade, and got to thinking that I could use AUM/Xequence on the iPhone and use a hardware mixer for seamless transitions between songs, DJ style.

How would you approach this, knowing that there'd also be a violin and a vocal in the mix, and there'd be effects on them?

  • I'll touch on the violin and vocal mix options:

    1. A small mixer with internal FX or an FX send loop would work and the iPhone could be added to 1 or 2 of the channels depending upon the decision to power up stereo or mono outputs.
    2. A multi-input audio interface with USB support could route all the external sound sources into the iPhone (NOTE: an iPad screen is a lot easier to see/use). Just count the number of inputs needed and add some power speakers for output (again stereo of mono options). Audio Interfaces from iConnect, Presonus, etc. Once you get your spec's nailed down ask for advise. More inputs will increase costs over the small mixer options but allow you to use the many, many IOS FX apps for echoes and otherworld FX. But if you just want some basic echo/reverb there's a lot of small mixers that have them built in.
    3. There are also some small PA systems that could work well and they are all adding iPhone input ports for groups using backing tracks on IOS.
