Apple has never really been very clear on how to use Switch control and none of what I put in this tutorial has been presented all in one video or pertaining to music making on IOS. Once you see ow it's done it's actually pretty easy. Too bad the official documentation sucks. If you have any questions, just msg me.

This is interesting, but I'm not sure how it would ever be used for jamming or performing.
Currently I find it quite handy to have an iPhone SE running KB-1 as a Bluetooth MIDI chord controller alongside the Sensel Morph to control NS2 on the iPad, but the method in the video looks very tedious and non-musical to me. Of course, I may be missing the point...I only use the triple tap/switch to turn on/off dark mode now. (not trying to be obtuse, genuinely curious how you use this for musical purposes)
What are some of the benefits of using this method instead of BT MIDI and something like KB-1, Lemur, or TouchOSC?
Yeah, its difficult to explain and the setup is extremely tedious.
But this is entirely different from MIDI commands. “Switch Control” is an accessibility feature (designed for people who simply cannot use a touchscreen for whatever reason) that allows a keystroke to be interpreted into a series of touch-screen commands. Of course for us musicians the preferable option is for apps to be designed with MIDI bindings for every single feature. But some apps don’t have extensive MIDI control... this accessibility hack lets you program a sequence of touch gestures to be done by a single key stroke. For example Genome MIDI sequencer has a lot of MIDI programmable actions. (Yeah!) But the record button maddeningly is not on the list (boo!) By design, you have to tap the record button with your finger in the Genome app. Aargh, so it could never be the hands-free MIDI looper we want it to be. But! As a workaround, use this iOS feature to simulate a tap on the screen at the exact location of Genome’s record button and now you have a keystroke enabled remote trigger to start record.
Unfortunately, in iOS 12 Switch Control only works with Bluetooth keyboard input, not MIDI controller input. If you have a device on iOS 11 you can program a MIDI controller to carry out the Switch Control action.
yes, while it's still not the ideal way to control your ipad, there are ways to make it as convenient as possible. 1 thing I did not mention yet, is that Apple now has the shortcuts app, which allows for extensive macro programing. Switch control has a function to call up any shortcut and it can be assigned to any key. Also any bluetooth controller will practically work. I use a compact fold up keyboard, but you can use a bluetooth joystick,

a bluetooth number pad, which is small and square and there are dyi tutorials on how to open up any of these and run a wire to a hardware switch or several switches so in essence it's a matter of how bad you want to be able to easily control your ipad as to how much time you put in to program it and research the most suitable switch configuration for you. At the very least, God forbid any of us temporarily or permanently lose the function of our hands, this would allow us to continue making music while injured. I happen to use it to control my ipad in my car without reaching up to touch the screen.
I looked around for a long time before I finally put 2 and 2 together and figured out how to do all this. It bugged the crap out of me that nobody actually explained it all in one place or in an easy to understand manner, especially not from the horse's mouth...ie Apple. So now it's in one video. There's more one can do that I didn't cover, but once you try what I teach in the tutorial, the rest is just a matter of trying out hte functions available to you to see what they do. The rest is pretty easy once you have the main functions set up.
well, a controller will use a lot less battery power than a smartphone and for jamming I wouldn't use just the switches but simultaneously a bluetooth midi controller, like the akai mini with 24 keys I have. This is mainly useful in a situation where having your ipad at your fingertips, isn't the best option or simply not possible. Another way to make it useful would be if you mirrored your screen from you IPAD to a large flatscreen tv by tethering it with a usb cable and using quicktime (currently only available mac computers, but I believe there are PC solutions) the reason for using a cable is so you have hardly any latency....but this setup would allow you to lay on your bed and view a giant screen and still make music comfortably.

I’m guessing this would integrate well with the Sensel Morph, it allows for custom mapping of the touch surface with up to 90 something separate target zones (not just for sending MIDI data). I’ll have to spend some time on this, but sounds like it could be rewarding. Currently the NS2 transport controls aren’t MIDI mappable.

it looks like it would, but the pricetag for that is bit higher than most would want to pay for a quick and cheap solution, but then again, the Sensei would double as a controller for other applications and hardware as well and with all the different overlays, gives one a ton of flexibility. Now you just have to get used to memorizing which button does what...lol
@bedheadproducer One really cool thing with the Sensel is that it allows for hand drawn controller surfaces...I can draw buttons on a piece of paper, scan and import that to the pc, then map that in the Sensel app. I could label every button on the paper overlay, using painters tape to secure it in place.
Not trying to be a salesman, but honestly the Sensel Morph is my favorite Bluetooth controller, also it can function like a large programmable trackpad/Wacom replacement for the pc. And it’s about $200 less than the small Roli, but has better MPE performance.
