Sonic Touch 28 - Stroke Machine and Electrify NXT
An excellent review of both apps from Nick and Gaz. The video and sound quality is second to none. They did not seem very impressed with Electrify NXT but did mention that it does have potential if enough attention is given to updates in the future. All in all however this was a well done review of what to expect from the two apps.

Thanks for posting this.
Nick and Gaz have a whole line of quality app reviews for the ios platform. Just do a search on Youtube for SonicTouch. I have based a lot of my purchases on reviews by them and our own Doug here on the forum from "thesoundtestroom" found on youtube also.
Most of us know about these, however I am posting the information for new comers.
Thanks very much. Didn't know of Sonic Touch.
Thanks for sharing.
He probably needs to learn the app a little bit more before posting reviews. You have to press and hold a bit for the velocity thing to show up. Seriously! The phaser fx won't work too since he needs to send whatever sample to fx slot 1. He's got some good points though like no undo which is pita for now.
.
Yeah. This feels more like play testing than an actual review. Theses apps deserve a much better review than that especially nxt which got a meh type of review with lot of stuff they don't know how to do and many omissions.
I too have heard alot about how fiddely NXTis and that it needs updates! To be fair to Sonic Touch if you had paid attention closely to what was said both admitted to not knowing the app as well as they could! This is why it is important to not over complicate your apps like NXT ect. Nick and Gaz are giving the review as new comers and that is what should not be lost in the review. Just how easy is the app to work with after downloading prior to reading for a night. If developers want their work to be more understood it would serve them well to produce videos and tutorials to avoid confusion. Sadly this was lacking in NXT. They review a ton of apps and know when something needs work or not I am fairly sure.. Some apps are intuitive and get results easily and others do not is the main point. This app needs some work was their point and it surely looks that way and sounds it from what I have heard and seen. They did say it has a lot of potential so after work and updates the app might become more useful. I appreciate them being honest about it and they help many of us make wise purchases in a flooded stream of apps coming to market.
Hmm, too be fair again, most of the comments over at discchord are highly favorable of this review. I am glad I went to read them now. The points I made above were made by a number of others there also. This is not a tutorial, your complaints on that should be adressed to the developers which was also pointed out in the comments at discchord.
I've never seen them do any reviews really. More like testing out, fiddling around with new apps, giving people a first look/preview kinda thing.
And @Tritonman2, NXT isn't over complicated at all. You should get the hang of the app pretty soon after starting it up the first time. Upgrade your iDevice to iOS 7 and give it a try (it really is an awesome, and fun to use groovebox).
I am going to pass on Nxt. I am glad you enjoy it. For my use it is not worth the upgrade. I have limited space and need apps that will be more productive for me.
Reading over at discchord it is hilarious to see a couple of folks get their panties in a bunch over this review... Gaz and Tim both added interesting comments recently.
@Tritonman2 Gaz said he talked to the developer about the app, surely a great opportunity to get the app understood and include this knowledge in the review/first look thingy ?
A missed opportunity perhaps?
I have to agree that you almost go into the app blind on purchasing. I also never thought about it but I agree with the lack of Drum kits being an update opportunity and a barrier to getting started.
The app has great potential though and has had 2 updates already!
I think Nick & Gaz can come over a bit unprepared and rushed in their reviews as if they have a busy schedule and this is just one of the many things they are doing that day.
They maybe need some competition
Seem great guys though bringing it to the attention of the wider audience.
I hope it will generate sales for the Devs as they both look great apps.
LOL! What would they be competing for?
Haven't watched it yet, but lack of drum kits, you mean NXT? It comes loaded with more kicks, snares, cymbs, hihats, percussions etc for the drum unit, then any other app I know of.
Stroke Machine didn't have anything at first, a handful of programs. But the last update loaded it up with quite a few new programs. Still not exactly the richest in terms of presets/kits contents though,
@ChrisG Yeah NXT, I prefer to select my own kits by individual samples but I think it will be useful to have some kits to select from already pre loaded into the 8 sample slots.
@Tritonman2 irony doesn't translate too well in a forum My apologies. I think they certainly add value to the platform and I have seen a lot of apps that I would not have purchased if I had not have stumbled upon their video on youtube.
Those are drum samples however . The review will make this more clear for you.

Yea maybe but fortunately this ain't no Beatmaker 2, so wiping up a drum kit from NXTs large sample library will literary be as fast as your fingers are (unless you take your time browsing, choosing the right sounds for your track etc, obviously:).
I always enjoy the SonicState video reviews, they're sort of a quick and easy everyman's version of what I really want to know. They often freely admit to not knowing the gear as deeply as they should, but with all the reviews they do I doubt they have the time to master everything they talk about.
For the most part they're fair though, and if nothing else interesting to watch. The one with Gaz going over Maschine Studio, LOL...
.
I read this thread before watching the video and was expecting to be a little frustrated by their review as as much as I like the pair and find them entertaining they can be superficial on occasion.
Now that I've watched it I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the review of Nxt was fair and their summing up of "It's definitely very promising. One to watch" was a reasonable conclusion. I've put a lot of hours in on Nxt since its release and am still finding things it can do so for such a deep App released without a manual I'm not surprised that they missed some of the functionality.
Stroke Machine I have been watching but haven't pulled the trigger on. I think this review has probably pushed me over the edge to buy it even although I know there are a lot of bugs.
The main observation I'd make about the reviews is that becuase they were led by two different people they were done in completely different styles and this led to it being dificult to make a comparison. Gaz's review of Nxt was the usual fairly superficial overview of its functionality. Nicks review of Stroke Machine was a frothy look at the sound engine with very little about the the actual sequencer behind it. I felt this was a little unfair to Nxt which has a really interesting sound engine. Sample mangling aside most of the functions on the FM synth, including wave shape and pitch on all four operators, can be driven by separate LFO's and envelopes before application of a filter, also capable of being modulated by a separate LFO or Envelope and into its own effects, which are also capable of separate modulation, and all of this is also controllable as automation within the clip. All this is provided in a very modular way so you can dip into that functionality or if you prefer have a very simple 4 operator FM synth with. There was also almost no mention of the loop mangling capabilities and beat matching for the loops was glossed over.
Still not a bad job all things considered.
I like these two as barometers for me. I honestly don't want reviews from experts of an app who've "Read The F'ing 80-page Manual" because people who do usually come across as salesmen who are too heavily invested in a product to recognize the pain points an average user is going to come across while using it.
Got Stroke Machine and i like it!
I am reading the manual now to find where it says how to import my own samples, but i cant find it.
Anybody here knows if it is at all possible?
Thanks and Cheers

well said!
There has to be a happy medium between knowledge and just providing a first impression or feeling for the product. If the review doesn't cover the ground that a lot of potential buyers might be interested in, like loop manipulation in Nxt, it limits its own value.

Because there is (unfortunatelly) no audiocopy option to do this, you have to use the iTunes file sharing function. After the samples has been transfered to your iPad, restart Stroke Machine. Then select "Sample" as waveform in the oscillator section. Now the sample browser will pop up. You'll find your samples in the user directory. If your sample file has embedded loop settings, Stroke Machine will recognize the loop -- which is really great for instrument samples.
I have been watching Sonic Touch from the start and I generally agree with their opinions. I think their review of Nxt was spot on. Wish I had waited for their review as I would not have bought it if I knew what it was like. Not intuitive enough for me at all...I'm liking the look of stroke machine though. Not dropping another £13 any time soon though....
Thanks for the reply klangsulfat. I hope acp will come in an update..
