New "Knowledge Base" category

Hi all!

I've not yet gotten around to creating the Audiobus wiki (I know, I know - there's just so much else needs doing!), so @LinearLineman has talked me into creating a new Knowledge Base category for the time being.

I don't have any particular plans for how it's to be used - it's not gonna be quite as good as a wiki, but in the meantime, hopefully it'll help to preserve those posts that are worthy of more than being lost to the sands of time. I'm imagining those posts in question being copied-and-pasted into a new thread on the KB category (with credit where due), so that they can be preserved there.

When I get around to setting up the wiki, we can move it over then.

    I'll probably hold off pushing it too far for the time being, as the wiki will be happening soonish. I imagine it more as a staging area for stuff to go on the wiki once it's there.

  • I hope some of you will sort thru your discussions for topics to post on the knowledge base. I will do the same.

  • So, I have started to post information on the knowledge base category and I am beginning to see why some think it duplicative of Support and Feedback and App Tips and Tricks. I posted a quote re What is Herz? That seems very appropriate. I also posted tips for Auria Pro... maybe that shouldn’t be in this category. “Modular Synthesis, How To” seems appropriate.

    Maybe some can check my posts and comment. Defining this category now will help @Michael and perhaps clarify the discussion as to it’s usefulness.... especially if folks don’t post. I believe it is a good idea, but the tidal currents of the forum might indicate otherwise.

  • It might be that there are a lot of experienced users coming to the forum on a more regular basis, whereas those who might benefit more from this category haven’t visited since it’s been set up, or haven’t visited with the need for that information yet?

    I think it’s a good idea, personally, as I am not an expert. :)

  • This is an important topic really. We have lots of answers to lots of questions here, with incredibly useful information. But it really is impossible for those with the questions to find the answers that are buried in pages and pages of comments and discussions.

    For example this week I saw someone ask about importing EXS instruments into AudioLayer. The AudioLayer thread is 32 pages deep... and I am sure that somewhere in that thread someone had already posted (maybe even with a video) about the easy process of importing an EXS instrument using iOS Files app, no PC or Mac needed. But the question had to be asked again and answered again because no one wanted to dig through the thread history and find the previous answer.

    It seems like this sort of thing happens all the time here. I don’t know how a “knowledge base” category would help unless it was restricted somehow... no commenting that is off-topic, keep threads on a single issue, new threads for separate topic, etc... and that seems to go against the spirit of the forum.

    I wonder if there were a way to “flag” posts for their usefulness. We can currently flag posts for spam or inappropriate content. Would it be possible to add a “star” recommendation to a post? It would be the opposite of a “flag.” So that it gets starred for promotion (not for deletion). Then a mod/ admin could review and add it to the wiki.

  • Well, I am glad you are all here, even though it has suddenly gotten a lot more confusing! I do agree this must be given thought before @michael expends any more effort on his labor of love. I guess I would approach it from what a beginner needs to know about....
    1/ hardware ( not specific models, just what they do, what folks do on them, etc)
    2/ Types of DAWs, sequencers, DAWless, etc.
    3/outline of generic recording techniques, multitrack, routing, insert, send, etc.
    4/ connectivity, interspersed, AU, AB3, Aum, etc
    5/Apps, the various types, uses etc.
    6/Mixing, effects, parameters, etc.
    7/Audio, monitors, mics, inputting acoustic instruments, vocals, audio interfaces, etc.

    Feel free to tear this list apart, add to it, anything. Perhaps if we get an outline of generic topics folks will volunteer to research Wikipedia (@audiogus?), comb threads, or even write articles.

    @mrfromage correctly targets newbies as those who would benefit from this, tho if it has traction a more advanced offering might be possible.... but maybe the veterans simply know all the principles and definitions. It feels like that would be the case.

    I just remember when I knew nothing about iOS. I could have read article after article on the basics.
    On the other hand, I am satisfied with where I am at after a year, and the forum has always generously answered my questions. But I am not reticent to ask. Other noobs might be.

    Also, maybe a poll to get the forum’s general opinions about this?

    If we pick the category of Knowledge Base can we then make the entry titles include a # hashtag for the topic (hardware, connectivity, specific apps etc)

    Ex: #Beatmaker 3
    or
    #Hardware MIDI

    also include whether the post has video ;P

  • I think @Michael has the right idea of using the category as a staging area for assembling the information into a knowledge base wiki so that we’ll be able to easily navigate to the information we’re looking for rather than trying to find a needle in a haystack that can happen with the longer threads.

    @LinearLineman had a very good idea here and it is different than App Tips and Tricks category because the wiki will have answers and solutions versus threads where posters are still trying to figure things out.

  • My request here is not to badger people who ask a question covered in the knowledge base - I always get frustrated when someone links my question to a 5 year old answer. I enjoy the discussion and participation, and with new iOS every year, and so many app updates - I'm never confident the info is updated. OTOH, reading the very long threads can sometimes be frustrating, or rewarding if you pick up some tangential tip. Look forward to seeing what happens :smile:

    It looks like dokuwiki has a few authorization plugins that support SSO. I managed a couple of DokuWiki-based wikis. Dokuwiki has some pluses and minuses. On the plus side, all the pages are actual files so backing up a Dokuwiki and moving it is more straightforward than database-based wikis. I think it is also probably simpler to get one up and running than a MediaWiki. Dokuwiki has some funkiness for sites that host a lot of large images, but that probably doesn't apply here.
