Article 13 has passed.

What does everyone think? I've not seen it discussed here.

There seems to be a lot of bad publicity surrounding it but it's good for musicians and other artists creating original material isn't it?

Do you think it's a good thing or bad?

Comments

  • On the surface, it sounds bonkers.
But I actually need to read what it is still.
    You could be right.

The original idea is to enforce copyright protection, which is understandable.
The big problem is that it's practically impossible to do it right.
Blocking content automatically using specialized software is not only prone to blocking what shouldn't be blocked from a copyright perspective, but the even bigger problem is a new dimension of potential censorship that can get out of control very quickly.
The companies that pay for the development of content filtering software will have a lot of influence, naturally.

The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Isn’t it just a Trojan horse for introducing ridiculous amounts of censorship and therefore propaganda?

  • I have had my own videos with my audio blocked on fb & Instagram by $ony and other corporations... it’s madness, you appeal, the still say that it is their material... one caved after the third appeal, $ony still have it blocked in 137 countries!!!
I gave up arguing... it was too time consuming and infuriating!
    I blame the bots.
    :)

Someone needs to sue them for taking away their livelyhood on a false premise and for other rights this violates

This seems like a very bad idea as each EU country will have its own implementation which means multinational internet content providers will be motivated to use the lowest common denominator as a strategy rather than come up with custom solutions for each country which would be much more difficult and expensive to implement. The consequence of this business strategy will be to err on the side of removing content. Only the smaller platforms exempt from the law will not be effected.

I predict the large platforms will try to pressure member countries to implement less restrictive measures if not lobby the EU to repeal the law. If they’re unsuccessful in this regard, then they’ll end up implementing filters.

Bottom line this seems like the interests of companies like YouTube and Facebook versus companies like Sony and Warner with the interests of the public hanging in the balance.
