  • Standalone only though.

  • Shame there’s no connectivity, but really good results in that vid.

  • Ya you gotta export wav, meh lol...i don't really understand why people still make stand alone / iaa only

  • @reasOne I agree and disagree with your statement.

*soapbox and its not directed at anyone just a general trend I notice from time to time.

I agree that in the iOS only workflow we want everything to connect to everything all the time. we want AUv3 versions of everything. And it would be good for developers to do that. But....

Not everyone has an iOS only workflow. Or they don't want to have to fool with opening AUM, loading the app in the effects slot, since it can't capture audio if it were in instrument slot. load in the mic or synth you are wanting to sample into it.

I think for this particular app, not all apps. I like the simplicity of it. It allows you to use found sounds to create something pretty cool, really quickly. Then just export the wav file into the bazillion sampler apps we have. or export the wav on your iCloud or audioshare in a folder labeled found sounds. Build up your own library of sounds to be used.

I think some apps are still viable and standalone apps and would welcome them as long as they have good export options. if its iTunes file sharing only, then no Mr. Developer, you loose. But if I capture some sounds, manipulate them and export the results quickly to other apps, it's a win. Mostly because I know that once I start opening up AUM or ApeMatrix or Audiobus, I am 9 bazillion percent going to get distracted.

with all that being said, if you want to request to the developer that you would like an AUv3 version, then thats ok. And it would be a welcomed addition to the AUv3 arsenal but let us not riot, rape and pillage the developer if he chooses not too. It seems like a really great "tool" for a specific purpose with great export options.

I am the worlds worse at taking an app and trying to do everything with it except what it was intended to do and then getting frustrated with the developer that I can't do what I want with the app that was never designed to do that. Which is fine, except the getting frustrated with the developer part, and thats the beauty of music, doing things outside the box.

  • I’m okay with these sorts of apps so long as there is a way to export the loops into the Files app as from there I can incorporate it into my workflow. The developer of Esion is very clear in his description of the app on the App Store about what it does and doesn’t do as well as its intended purpose so I believe it should ‘t be too hard to decide if it’s an app you’d want to use or not.

I agree with all of what you wrote, apart from one thing - better connectivity with Audioshare would make it easier to manage and share your recordings, and being able to import sounds back into the app (unless it does this, in which case ignore this bit) would lift it up to a whole new level. Relying on mic input is very limiting for an app geared up for playing and manipulating audio samples.

Saying all that I really like what it does already, and can definitely see a place for this in my soundscape building workflow. I'll probably get this later.

I think if the dev is openly saying it’s not getting connectivity, then you can’t complain it’s not there.

I might pick it up later, looks like a fun thing for four quid.

Anyone know how long sample recording length is?

  • @onceuponasynth Very cool! Don’t care it’s standalone as it seems to be made to exist on its own.

My initial thougt is that the mixer could be made even “cooler” if it was a special mixer. In that it’s not volume, but position, so as you move away not only does amplitude decrease but frequency response also changes to cut out highs, etc... Seems that could fit in with the idea of this app capturing sounds in the real world...

Love it. Cool, unique, intuitive interface. Record and export out. Looks like fun. Small footprint. Universal. $4

    Sold!

  • Oh this is the Ribn midi cc controller dude! Great! Thrilled to support :)

  • Although I would love some connectivity, I understand why Nebojsa wouldn't bother with it, considering what I get from his workflow in his youtube channel. But some Ableton export seems MIA

  • edited March 2019

Good fun this, will definitely get some usable textures from it.

Worth noting - it’s not mentioned in the app description, but I was able to ‘open in’ a saved recording to Audioshare, which is a great bonus, as I don’t get on with the Files app.

  • @onceuponasynth congrats on the app! Very creative. I get that tempo sync is not the goal and that is fun but I would love to be able to just record x number of bars at a certain tempo to import into a DAW project (even if the sound wasn’t synced as such). Thx!

  • great dev, great app, thanks for posting

  • I’m really enjoying it. Really easy to make interesting textural stuff to export out and play with in other apps.

If you haven’t bought it yet, it’d make a great Friday/weekend treat. I got my $4 of fun out of it the first evening. :)

  • Reviving this thread just to say I finally bought this, after knowing of its existence for years, and I regret holding out so long. This app is insanely fun.

Kinda sits in a spot with something like DroneLab. Fun standalone apps with good export options.

Agree. Its fun, how do you share recordings outside the app?

Ah I see the sneaky ‘slide-over’ on the recording !

I’m giving it a go, and agree with @reasOne that for quick, um ‘field’ recordings, it’s fine. Brusfri is your friend…

update : this is lovely! Great for ad hoc experimentation and once I worked out how to export the wavs (slide the recording text right) all good. Going to get a lot of use from this, especially on my phone with my binaural mic headset. Like Morphagene for the price of a posh coffee. (ish)

@HotStrange : thanks for the tip on Drone Lab. Missed that one - bought! Pairs well with Esion, actually. Assembling an all-wav export thing in AUM as we speak…

  • how did I never see this before!? right up my street

Ha! Somehow I had missed DL too, FFS! Thanks for the intro

Sure thing! I stumbled on DroneLab a few months ago and used it a lot for a few weeks. Think I’ll be diving back into it again this weekend and pair it with Esion as well. So easy to get some drones going in both of these apps. Another, though not as good, is Eternal Flow Drone Also Ephemeral is great for this as well, and it’s IAA!

Happy to help! It’s a great little app. I mentioned in the above comment Eternal Flow Drone and Ephemeral Dream. 2 more good, and cheap, drone apps.

  • Thankyou - more great things to explore!

  • Almost bought Esion when it came out but it had no AudioBus or AUv3.

I see it has not been updated since Dec 2019 and the same with his other 3 apps. Wonder if he is still in business?

  • Just got Esion and it’s endless fun. So simple yet exports fascinating loops. If you’re into original textures don’t hesitate!

  • has anyone got to find the wav recordings into the files?

After making a recording tap the upper-left 'cassette' icon then tap the lower right 3-dots, then files icon (2nd from left, bottom of screen), any recordings you've made will be there and on each one you can swipe left to delete or swipe right to send anywhere (files, email, etc).

Could be built inside Drambo, with more features if you like.

    • Use one Flexi per track to record and loop audio
    • Add effects like the ones in Esion and much more
    • Randomize effects
    • Sequence effects and run them in sync with your DAW or AUv3 host or Ableton LINK
    • Export audio either from Flexi or by stem recording
    • Control everything via MIDI
    • Use scenes to add up to 16 sound effect combinations ("presets") and crossfade between them
