DIY keyboard placement solution?

Hey all,
I am daily trapped in studio Tetris, moving things around to try and find that perfect ergonomic workflow. I’m so close!
Big ass NI komplete kontrol keys is main issue!
Currently to far away from front of desk.
My goal is to raise it a few inches and bring it forward a few as well. As you see I’m using
Clamps and 4x4s.
Anyone have any ideas or rack type hardware solutions I could add to desk??
Thanks much everyone!

my solution, sell 99% of all my hardware and just keep the iPad and a few necessities hehe

  • Yes indeed, the zen way. I can appreciate that method, having let go 4 or 5 pieces I used to deem “essential” and feeling better because of it.
Although I think I’ve come to my core bits. So I’d like to come up with a solution before I trade this big NI keyboard(with light guide and display) for one of the new tiny NI M32’s.

I've actually thought about doing something similar :)

Once I know a bit more what direction Apple is taking with iOS13 regarding file-management and mass-storage support things will be a bit clearer. (I still need a computer to transfer all file types to/from sd-cards and flash-drives etc.).

I guess my MacBook Air (Mid 2013) will not get macOS 10.15 and my Air 2 will likely not get iOS13 either so...
...the 'solution' would be to replace the computer hardware with a new 256GB iPad Air with Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard Cover (which is actually quite nice to type on) as a 'laptop replacement'.

Ideally I'd love to have a 15" iPad or something like that...

What about putting the NI keyboard on a drawer slide that you can pull out under the desk when you need it and push it back when you don't?

I was about to suggest this exact same thing. I have a 88-key Yamaha piano set up like this

  • Unfortunately there is a slide out for computer keyboard currently in use for roli keys and midifghter.

  • Ya I’d have to rebuild the whole slide table to achieve that.
I saw these(link below) maybe would work if
The clamp can be turned 180 degrees so I could use in front of table instead of back.

I've been extremely happy with clearing the studio and having spave and less wires, I feel like iOS is here to stay and at least I'll have everything I have now for as long as my iPad works Haha
I have a Mac book pro as well and use ableton to finish stuff up, but 99% iOS
I like to have a few effects pedals cuz they have way more options than the apps we have rn
If I wanna see anything happen in iOS land is to see more unique / crazier / deeper #effects.
Avalanche run as an iOS app would change everything

  • Personally i would 3d print something. But that might be hard if you dont know how to draw 3d models. There are tons of cheap services, also many libraries and schools have printers you can use for free or for a small fee

I was going to compliment your DIY design efforts, then I saw that you have not yet switched the AB forum to DARK MODE !!

  • ;) Joking of course, looks good @RUST( i )K very inspiring.

It makes me wonder if @tput73 could build an angled contraption that slides over the other gear, then slides back out of the way. Something the shape of Rust(i)k’s black box holding the Novation Launchpad, but much wider.

Don’t judge me because I am a different color than you.

    😉

That is some thing I plan to try.

New piece of gear coming so was gathering some supplies and old wood in hopes of getting an all 1 layer idea.

How do you change the color?

Took me 4 years in Abeleon to figure it out....lol

@RUST( i )K it looks like you already have Mojave running in dark theme, so I thought it would be OK to joke ;) there should be a link at the bottom of the Audiobus webpage "Dark Mode". Click on it to experience the magic.

This is also exactly how I manage my desk space

I've been raiding the HomeDepot discount shelf. Wood bits are 70% discount, and less splintery than the free stuff I usually collect.

    😎
    Now I understand why your name is @RUST( i )K ™️ 👍

  • I would also use wood with screws to build the perfect support for the keyboard. I takes some time from the initial idea to the finished support construction, but it is generally rather affordable and stable. Especially keyboards and keypad MIDI controller should have a rigid stand, for those moments where the keyboard playing gets more physical, intense.

in my houshold and workshop there is always some wood available which I can use to build the perfect stand, holder, or support. For lighter smaller devices I even use Lego from my childhood days.

  • Wow! Looks really amazing @RUST( i )K !
And great idea @Hmtx - a slide out angled contraption! I think it may just work. Now to find the bits to make it!
    Thanks for the inspiration everyone!

  • Wow, great work here, definitely gives me some ideas. I wish I had better building skills though.

This site is awesome for DIY home stuff based on IKEA parts. No special building skills required beyond the basic alan wrench and drill variety....

  • @AudioGus THANK YOU!!! Perfect for the ADHDers like me with more ideas than skills! I already saw some ideas on there. And I do have 2 pedalboards made from IKEA shelves (2 pedalboards for $9 from that!), and they work really well. I guess I'm off to do some ikea shopping this week.

It’s done! Wahoo! I’m kinda silly since I had this slide out under an old tv. FN perfect.
Thanks again for the guidance and inspiration y’all

At the very bottom of any page there's a "Dark Mode" / "Light Mode" toggling link on this forum. Not sure I prefer it myself but I'll try to for a day or 2 to see.
