Midi Sequencer

  • Has anyone checked out Spectre Modular Sequencer? Seems like another good approach along similar lines.

  • I have Spectre, it's OK but you have to work a bit harder to get results. MidiSequencer is much more instant.

  • oh, I see I was confusing this sequencer with another sequencer app.

  • Next version of midiSequencer will include saving 20 snapshots as a bank and gate% up to 400% for overlaps. Also being developed are device level routing (active, clock and latency compensation) and many more ornaments (if you like ratcheting or ornamental effects).
This is the first of many apps I am looking to develop, it's focus was on the fun you can have with performance (hence the tempos and cycle delayed changes!).

  • Cool @midiSequencer! I look forward to seeing these changes! :-)

  • Me too :-)

  • +1 on dev responsiveness to @midiSequencer!

Next version out next week folks.
I've listened to all the requests (file saving, music scales, improved performance interaction).

    video demos here:
    and here

Here is what it will have - no AB yet, but it will play any coreMidi app in your stack:

Now working on a rack version to multi-track the sequencer.

    Here is the itunes description:
MidiSequencer is a new and exciting way to trigger your favourite IOS coreMidi synths to produce more experimental sounds than would normally be possible using existing sequencers and keyboard playing techniques.

With an ability to run at extremely low and high tempos (1 to 1020 BPM or more) midiSequencer will produce sounds from your synths of a more ethereal and psycho-acoustic quality (feathery trills and bass rumbles) alongside the more traditional music sequenced patterns.

Aimed firmly at live & studio performance for both profesional & amateur, every effort has been made to make changes whilst playing.
A Cycle button is available to delay changes until the sequence resets allowing you to be less accurate with your timing. This includes loading in completely new patterns or changes in key.

Rather than work in retricted tonal harmony, midiSequencer also has 42 tonal keys (including chromatic) with enharmonic note names making it
easier to work in exotic keys.

Each of the 16 steps can be individually configured for note, velocity, length, midi channel, and up to 4 independant midi controllers.
These controls can be set using sliders which can either be dragged or drawn on screen by hand or by using randomising functions.

After playing a step, flexible routing options exist on each step to allow you to jump out of the normal loop patterns enabling you to build up small sequences out of the available 16. This is also interactive during play.

Flexible routing allows virtual & network sessions and all midi is now based on the excellent midiBus library for rock solid midi clock.
Inputs & outputs can be individually activated, have clocks enabled and also include latency for synchronising with external higher latency
equipment (e.g. softsynths on your digital audio workstation). MidiSequencer will also listen to external equipment and stop/start on midi clock.

Midi input is also possible with the ability to record incomming midi channel notes, velocity & CC's into midiSequencer. During play your midi input will transpose the sequence currently playing.

A performance rollout panel exists for you to quickly load & save ideas into snapshot patterns. Up to 20 are available in a bank which can be saved to disk with a name, date and a description. These files can be exported & imported using itunes file sharing or via email.

Sequences, as well as being played in regular intervals (stepTime) can also be played in legato mode (noteTime) where you have fine control on note length to achieve complex rhythms.

A variety of ornamentation are available to add colour to normal notes. Repeated notes (2,3,4 or 5) give ratcheting effects whilst mordents, appoggiatura & acciaccatura add a more baroque feel.

All aspects of midiSequencer have been made to be modified during play - including synchronised file loading, tempo changing and step redirection. This together with fine control on midi messaging to your synths, gives you a new way to enhance your enjoyment of your favourite synths.

    Ufff....this is amazing...

  • @midisequencer Looks incredible!

After playing a step, flexible routing options exist on each step to allow you to jump out of the normal loop patterns enabling you to build up small sequences out of the available 16.

Can you explain this a little more? I don't get it, particularly the 'build up small sequences' part.

Also, I'm sure it's been requested before but I would dearly love a song/pattern chaining mode ala Magellan or DM1. Or a way to support changing the active pattern via MIDI? Then one could create songs via a secondary sequencer by sending program changes of whatever.

At the moment you have 16 steps. Each step after it plays can then skip to another step (1..16). You can interrupt the sequence currently playing by touching the number. So, you can build up a group of notes within the 16 to play in a mini-loop: For example looping forwards:
1,2,3,4 then jump back to 1 to repeat.
5,6,7,8,9 then jump back to 5
10,11,12,13,14,15,16 then jump back to 10 (normally would do a jump to 1)

You can touch steps 1,5 or 10 to select the sub-sequence.

There is also logic to allow you to mute and skip a step and also reset back to the first starting note (note not skipped). Also handles the different types of direction (forward, reverse, bounce, double bounce - but not random).

It's not pattern sequencing as such, that's comming in the next release with the ability to have a rack of midiSequencers in a rack (think of Reason here) and routed to drive another sequence (transpose) &/or to any current interface (output say to hardware or an AB synth). It will be possible to load in another pattern (I call them snapshots as they contain tempo/transpose settings too) at any step too which will dynamically load another 16 note pattern.
Midi in triggering will be supported as it's not always possible to switch this in real time - so you would probably keep a sequence on screen to noodle with, and have midi control the others (or have the step logic decide).
I'm working on all this now for release in a couple of months - complete with AudioBus integration I should add.

You can get a form of multi-tracking at the moment by having a gate length > step length - it will overlap the notes. So you could say have a mix of alternate steps going to different midi channels and overlapping by playing longer than a step (up to 4 steps).

    Hope that makes sense?

  • I've been working with the current version for the last week or so, and am really looking forward to the next release. It certainly sounds you have some great things in store for this in the near future.
    Great App!!!

  • @midiSequencer Thanks a lot for the thorough reply.

^^^^ Deserves a 'holy shit!'. Need my test flight account? :)

  • ^ +1 on the holy shit. :D

  • ^ +1 on the 'Need my test flight account?' :)

  • Really excited!

  • Would accept a few new beta testers (I too use testFlight) - email me via the app - first come first served. You also get a working demo to run as a 2nd app.
I'm looking for people with Audiobus and sequencer experience mostly.

v1.5 should be out in a few days fingers crossed (improved version from demo videos - making it easier to select & draw - i.e. you don't need to select a slider first!).

  • Just got this and having some fun with it. One thing - the tempo doesn't seem completely solid when switching from the sequence to another app. Is that to be expected?

  • Beta Testing, cool...how much do you pay?

  • @bennorland - with v1 yes. Much improved with the new version.

  • Looking forward to the update! I love the channel switching feature on the current version. Lots of fun to be had there.

  • much better to have full control on midi - so why not per step - great for those of us with alot of hardware synths too.

  • Okay, I admit to being a little dismissive of this, and then I saw that second video above with Magellan and Sunrizer. Yeah...looks like another purchase for me to make. Will wait for the update, though.

When I saw the integration of the scale notes into an analog midi sequencer, that sold me on this being an actual music composition tool.

  • Focus is on performance - and for that you need good feedback. If you don't read music, then maybe bars would be just as good (e.g. Genome/Thesys) but I like to see the notes in a sequence - although I nearly killed me adding all the enharmonics!

  • I wish more devs would implement the enharmonics better and at least honor the key signature anyway. For instance most music apps will write the key of F as F, G A, A#, C, D, E, F when the key signature for key of F is one flat (Bb) instead of the A#. I know that A# is enharmonically Bb but from my years of reading music I want to see and refer to it the way I'm used to.

Kudos to MidiSequencer for doing this. Maybe this will start a trend with other apps too. Having said that I will never play in Fb minor, in practice it's never written that way.

  • It was alot of effort to do this - but yes we should support those people who read music notation - it's good practice anyway.
I did reach a problem stage where I had a problem though - my minor keys are only harmonic ascending (so sharpened 7th) - I probably will add the descending form (natural 7th) at some point, but the major/minor are only the start. Step Poly Arp has a good set of scales (although no enharmonics).
