midi fx apps list

the app store is note very well at sorting through music apps. i’d like to start a list midi fx here, so we can all enjoy

  • Off the top of my head - some might not be defined as FX so help me edit.

Rozeta Suite (a collection of MIDI FX tools)
    KB-1 - a virtual keyboard
    Autony - a generator
    PolyPhase - a generator
    Riffer - a generator
MidiTools - AU updates to many of the aging MidiFlow GUI Tools
    MidiFlow
StreamByter AU - programmable MIDI engine
Midi Delay (haven't jumped for this one yet)
PolyThemus (something like that... chords get split out to distinct synths. @thesoundtestroom made a demo recently)

and coming soon "Mosaic" - a MIDI FX designer (StreamByter does this too)

  • Midi Delay is actually called MidiEcho.

  • and there’s the ones still in development ;)

  • edited April 2019

Quantum can actually apply midi fx to an input, but it tends to be used on its own sequence steps.

Midi is of course more than just notes....

  • There are some websites to search the App Store
    https://fnd.io/#/
    https://appsliced.co/
Also on the Audiobus Compatible Apps Page select “Midi” and “Effects” buttons to sort the list.

  • I strongly suggest midiecho in the FX slot after Cality. Thank me later.

That'll work! Try muting the odd/even numbers in midiecho. Really nice effects.

  • And then there are also FAC Envolver and my own Perforator which can send out MIDI CC sequences.

Is there a way of automating MidiEcho?

  • Some more to the list

    • Cality, generate clouds of midi notes and add note probability and swing to midi input
    • Xequence AU | Keys and Pads, an adjustable keyboard/pad controller
    • ScaleBud, keyboard that can send chords or only the notes of a given scale (also uses its midi input)
    • Physicle, two midi note generators

If you extend your list to include midi sequencer AU, you also can add

    • Atom, flexible midi pattern editor (and in future also for CCsj
    • Fugue Maschine, one pattern, four adjustable playheads with applied scale
    • Photon, midi pattern recorder/player/editor
    • StepBud, midi step sequencer
    • StepPolyArpUnit, Arp, pattern sequencer for notes and CCs

    your welcome!
for my music taste - its the most important midi effect as it gives you the chance to dial up syncopated rhythms much like its audio counterpart.
It differs from Quantum's version as it works independently for note on & note off messages so you can sustain keys.

Can't believe I only released it 6 months ago.... and I've almost finished my 4th AUv3 Midi effect (also taken from Quantum)

  • You might have a slight branding issue with midiecho, @midiSequencer. It really does way more than the name suggests.

Indeed. I love this app. It turns anything slightly static into something jumpy and lively.

  • Purchased Midi Echo today. Pretty much like Cubase's Midi Delay - looks simple, but a very powerful tool. Super fun to have in iOS. First trial - Bram Bos Rhythm into Midi Echo, Midi Echo driving Marsenne. Then Rozeta LFO in S&H modulating pitch in Midi Echo. Hosted in AUM. Really digging what I'm getting. I also recently got Quantum, but there's so many options / features I haven't got round to properly exploring the midi delay in it. Thanks to Anthony Saunders for the top apps with great documentation.

  • It looks like we're in the era of AU tools. I hope some of the big monolithic apps consider repurposing their code in smaller chunks of behavior and re-selling them to us as AUv3
Modules. (Then slipping us a clue that the big app speeds up your workflow. Win-win.)

So, far we've seen a few work this approach to what I expect is a solid ROI: 4pockets, @midiSequencer, etc.

The biggest beasts ($50 Apps) have the most code assets to leverage (Auria Pro's Lyra Sampler for me, please, @WaveMachineLabs).

At some point Korg might decide to play along... sometime in the next decade.

I think Propellerheads is close given the CTO's presentation last year showing "Rack Extensions" running on an iPad and in a browser. Reason Compact might be their interim
step to create the portal to buy Rack Extensions.

  • Does anyone know if there is and midi fx that could be used to add swing/shuffle to fugue machine, etc ?

Cality has a swing knob, I think it should work on fuguemachine

  • Cool, juggling between this and mosaic :-)
