TIP: Tie a rope around your waste to find your way back to the mothership like they do on spacewalks... a tether.
"I’ve seen things… seen things you little people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion bright as magnesium… I rode on the back decks of a blinker and watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments… they’ll be gone."
(original script monologue for Roy Batty)
Little people is just 'forced perspective' reference.
I also recently bought Eventide Blackhole, so the combination of the two might get crazy.
$200 and iLok? Did you really? I did just buy a $175 keyboard but I can take it to the beach.
I won't but I could. Maybe sit in with a busker buddy. I could. Play on the toilet. I will. TMI?
I got it on sale for $49, and it was recently on sale for $29 after the famous Blackhole photo. I’m happy paying $49 for it. It’s pretty good.
Too good of an opportunity to pass up. I get that. Do you have any other iLok Manager controller plug-ins or did you have to figure that out too. I probably have one installed and forgot about it. I do that. I just don't open Logic enough to remember how to use it well. Every plug-in buy takes me back down the Rabbit's Hole... following Alice.
It's Wonderland for sure, tho'. Blows me away. Then I forget.
Yeah, I’ve got a couple of other free synths that use iLok. I didn’t find it too be too much of a hindrance.
Is ReBirth looked? I took that free offer.
That's what I've been doing since VDelay came out. I can't help myself!
Anything->VDelay->Blackhole
Huge I tell you - HUGE!
Not sure, as I don’t have that one. I have Hybrid and Vacuum Pro from AIR Technology, which I got either for free or like $1, I don’t remember.
Yes. It's Hybrid and Vacuum for $1 or so. @Lady_App_titude posted the deal and I took the leap. They installed iLok Manager which indicates why they offered the Apps for $1. It was to get iLok on our systems, I think. Lower the barrier to entry for more apps and probably do some "diagnostic" uploads about the apps we own. There was also a 3rd app that was offered but would not install properly. I remember trying many times for the 3rd App. I wanted my $0.33 back. It also got me to register with PluginBoutique and I'll bet they hammer me with email offers on the account I never read. Waves gave me a trail product to use and drove me to fits with marketing. Several times I almost bought Plugins and instruments but they didn't create good karma with me.
I have ilock. So far no issues at all. Just another thing to update. 12 or so programs use it.
And for the completest, the poetry of that monologue after Rutger Hauer adapted it.
It's not often that a monologue gets its own Wikipedia page, but that one most certainly warrants it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tears_in_rain_monologue
I bet that monologue would sound great with Valhalla delay applied............
I wouldn't say that I don't have problem with iLok, but they're a necessary evil I'm willing to put up with. Especially considering that in many cases it's the main thing keeping small specialist plugin developers in business.
Some think 'piracy is simply a part of being in the plugin business, and if your plugins are good, you'll sell enough to make a profit anyway. But small specialist plugin providers often have less than a thousand potential customers to sell too in total, so piracy completely destroys their business model.
Some of my frustration comes from buying a Plugin and then finding out about this
dependency. I have too much history with this software model and regret buying the product immediately. But it's there now so on ward. I will look for it and factor that into my purchasing decision process. I read that the Valhalla app didn't have it and that mattered.
Software piracy vs controlling your computer by a product. Such a complex ethical and
commercial issue.
@analog_matt shared a number about some of his sales numbers for AudioKit D1 and the numbers for IOS are really small and the average App price is around $5.
$5x1000 = $5000
What's a desktop average? $50?
$50x1000
I think the average IOS Music Developer has a day job.
I like this thread as a general discussion of the IOS vs Desktop Music Market.
@Lady_App_titude is another occasional Forum member that tends towards
Pro tools but seems to enjoy the financial benefits of collecting IOS Apps as well.
She will often alert the Forum when there are great desktop deals.
Valhalla DSP as a company works economically because of several facts:
it's a one man show of an exceptionally talented developer
he earned a lot of reputation in gear slutz discussions and is a nice chap
prices are affordable and there are no discounts nor sales
Some facts on desktop plugin sales:
The ratio of demo to purchase is 2-5%.
If you release a plugin your maximum timeframe (non ilok protected) is 4 months until it's cracked and floating on the net.
Customers don't mind quality but labels and brands (that's why almost everything is faking the vintage look of 'famous gear') and it works even better with the confirmation of the respective brand's owners - UAD's desktop core business is based on that scheme.
Their plugins are protected by the associated DSP hardware (plugins are registered to your UAD DSP card).
Bottomline: it's a tough business...
Speaking of open-source, Sean Costello (the genius behind Valhalla plugins) donated the reverb code that is used in AudioKit Synth One & Digital D1.
He seems like a super-smart and swell guy!
Valhalla reverbs are the only reverbs I will buy.
Hmm, while we wait for the AUv3 version of D1 what about an 'D1 Effects AUv3' as a teaser?
This way we could utilise the nice effects from D1 with all our other apps
I heard that Valhalla Delay was on the streets in pirated form within 24 hrs of release. That's how brutal the business can really be at its worse.
The good news for outfits like Valhalla is that many customers have ethics of some kind even though they may occasionally install dodgy software. They support independents like Sean Costello as they appreciate the effort he has gon too to make his products reasonable value and DRM free (a simple XML based license).
Much the same goes for Audio Damage who put Sean on the map. And Chris from Audio Damage once witticised that 80% of people install dodgy music software whilst the other 20% are lying about the installation of dodgy music software.
Here's a toast to a modicum of ethical values.
Yes, removal of a serial number check isn't even an appetizer for those who break into software.
Sean counts on customers' loyality and I'm glad it works for him.
My preferred DAW (Saw Studio) doesn't even come with any protection (in 3 sizes for $300, $1200, $2500), the developer just asks you to not pass it on.
That seems to work like in Sean's case... and it's also the product of a one man show (Bob Lentini). Customers appreciate the ongoing support of the product, which actually is the oldest of all Windoze DAWs, with only 1 major design change. Afaik the 1st version could multitrack 8 channels of audio on a Pentium 133... go figure
Another unique way of handling software is from Freakshow Industries. They basically allow you to “steal” their plugins, but ask that you do the decent thing and pay for them. The plugins are very unique, as is the company.

interesting approach - so much stylish anti that curiosity is triggered
That's one crazy web site!
Their plugins definitely lean heavily towards noise/destruction/chaos. Not great for a James Taylor cover, but beautiful for making madness come to life.
Don’t get the hate for iLok on this thread, is it that much of a hindrance really?
No (with rare exceptions out there as always). It's more a matter of principle, I think. I think it's overly cumbersome, but I wouldn't want my stuff pirated of I needed to feed my family with the money. At any rate, Valhalla doesn't use it.
Let's stay focused on the amazing delay.
Delay....
