Controlling Jamup using MIDI, Trouble with MPK mini

Greetings.

Using the pads on Akai MPK mini to control effect toggle in Jamup pro xt. MIDI in Jamup is great, however it appears receiving/accepting changes only using CC, and not PC. I can only assign pads to control CCs in Jamup, and when I press a pad (assigned to say, change to next bank) it jumps from bank 1 to bank 3. Instead off toggling, it's like the button is pressed rapidly two times. This means if I assign a pad to toggle an effect, it toggles the effect off, then immediately on (I have to hold the pad DOWN to bypass the effect).

However.... The CC signals work for changing presets, from A (pad 1) to B (pad 2). There is no "skipping" or "double clicks", as occur when trying to use the pads to toggle effects.

Would this not be a problem if my controller was sending PC and not CC? It appears that Jamup MIDI in only receives CC and not PC, because I'm trying send PC during MIDI learn and JU will only respond to CC. Does anyone else use their keyboard to control MIDI in Jamup (or Loopy? I'm having similar problems in Loopy)

Please advise, thanks!

  • I'm using the Axiom mini 32 and the transport controls send CC on and off messages each time instead of a toggle setup. That's a whole other story, but I think my workaround could help you.

Drum pads are usually set up for momentary by default right? Unless the MPK lets you switch them to toggle mode you will be sending CC 127 and CC 0 messages with each press and release.

There's an app called Midibridge that can do all kinds of cool things, intercepting and filtering different types of midi messages, transforming them, rerouting them to other channels, etc.

You could set up the app to filter the second value and only allow the first, or map a PC message to a CC message.

    That's one idea anyway.

  • Thanks for the idea Dave. In fact, the solution was rather simple. I never used the Editor app to change controls of the MPK before. I didn't even know I could as I picked it up on CL just to control synths. Now, using it with JU I'm getting closer to using it in a live setting.

    New trouble:

There does not appear to be a way to assign CCs to effect and amp parameters, like bass, mid, treb, or delay repeats. (There is an output volume control though) Is this control available yet? Will it come in a future update? Would love to have tone controls right there on the MPK. Thanks!

  • It appears as though Jamup receives MIDI on all channels as well. Can anyone confirm this?

  • CJ, yes, any cc you bind to JamUp is lost for other use, since JamUp receives all channels.

I think daveproper's suggestion of using MIDI Bridge could be a workaround, but I haven't needed or tried it yet.

Roger, thank you. I've made it work so far. As for configuring midi bridge, which I do have, I'll give it a go and see what happens!

Hopefully amp and pedal parameters will become assignable this year.
