We need a single track AU that allows copying and pasting multiple phrases of wave files
With all of the great updates released recently, the only thing that I'd really, really like to see, is an AU that, like a multitrack DAW, allows comping of multiple phrases of audio.
Ideally, it would contain a time line, and allow me to go and insert a loop of audio at a time marker in a song.
To further explain, imagine a single track of a standard DAW. Imagine being able to manage audio just like a DAW--paste multiple different loops with snap to grid or free hand paste to anywhere along a timeline.
--You could build up an entire drum track.
--You could insert a special one-off loop at a certain point in the song and have it play at the right time.
--You could record and edit a track as an AU that is savable within your project
--You could use multiple instances to make an app like AUM, Audiobus, or ApeMatrix into a complete DAW.

This would be great!
I agree! This is really the only thing that is lacking from the "Modular DAW" concept.
I think you are really trying to sneak some audio tracks into NS2 while no one is looking.

You profile picture gets me every time. As in "WTF?"
What would be the source of timing. Seems like it would need something more precise than MIDI Clock for audio. Still. There's another thread where they are making the complete list of what's needed in a DAW and it gets longer and longer. Good new... there is a real DAW yet. It's like a horse race and the finish line is moving faster than the lead horse.
Checklist
O It has MIDI FX.
O Sample Accurate Timing
To work as an AUv3 Apple would probably have to insert a clocking service in
IOS that everything must sync with including the DAW/not-DAW host. Just a guess... "Developer! Is this possible?"
Isn’t it time for a BeatHawk update.. BeatHawk seems to be the ideal candidate..
BeatHawk 3?
I vote yes!
I'm not sure if I remember correctly but AFAIR CoreMIDI already handles MIDI clock with sample clock precision as long as there's no MIDI hardware involved.
NS2 does it already, as do BeatHawk and AudioLayer - you can load any sample on any pad and adjust start/end points.
"Copy and paste" of a specific audio segment is basically the same as loading the audio file on multiple pads or keys and trimming start and end points individually.
Have you tried that?
Oops. I misread the title trading phrases with phases... My bad.
Phases are like millisecond variations so I'm thinking "Timing".
Nevermind.
I rarely apologize. Keep waiting. I got some good tips for another issue
related to Start/Stop transports. Time to test AUM update and Link Start/Stop.
"Potentially Pasting Phrases Produces Pulsed Phase Plagued Projects... not".
In fact you can do that in AUM, using Atom. Just load your samples (one per channel) and assign the « play enable » parameter to a specific note. Then use Atom as a timeline that will trigger the sample at the moment you decide (play the appropriate note to start/stop the sample). Magic ? No, it’s even better...

Now why didn't I think of that DOH!
It would even more awesome if it was also possible to set the 'speed/pitch' for the audio-file using a midi-note or maybe it can be done already?!
(This way an AUM channel would be treated like a monophonic sampler).
That was the point of making a proboscis monkey my avatar, so many years ago! Hehehe!! :
I believe AUv3 is sample accurate. I could be wrong though.
I've thought of using BeatHawk or Audiolayer, and that may be the only way right now, but it's more difficult to automate. Nevertheless, that's about all I can think of right now that would work universally. An AU app would be incredibly helpful.
I've thought about it as an alternative, but I have really been hoping for a more visual alternative--something that I can graphically see, like an actual track. Nevertheless, it is an alternative that I may have to try.
Play rate is assignable as CC or Note so in theory it's possible. Not tried it so do not know how successful using notes would be or whether having your original sample at middle C means that notes map correctly.
That is nice! I especially like that it is not dependent upon a lot of added apps. The only downside is......can you imagine the number of AUM channels required to do a simple song using just 15 phrases with routing and effects? I like that there currently exists a way for this to actually be done, but my request is to make things simpler. A single audio track of a DAW can comp all of those wav files into a single AUM channel, which can then be volume automated by a Atom channel, and not require any additional routing. As I said, I really do like that there are current ways to accomplish this, but I'm looking to make things easier and more efficient, while still allowing me to use a modular setup. I hope that makes sense. By the way, I'll be bookmarking this thread, because there are some really cool ideas here that I may end up using--even if my AU wish never comes to be.
Will play around with this...
I mean if it's possible to use midi to trigger and control gate (note length) and pitch each AUM track could in practice be turned into a monophonic sampler and then use the other 'what's it's name' app to distribute multiple notes to multiple tracks for polyphony
I agree! No matter how many times I read the manual and experiment, I keep discovering new approaches to doing things with AUM that I didn't think about previously. I really, really love how flexible it is!
I'd be very interested to see/hear how you get on with this
But here again, this is very, very convoluted. I am guessing you must have much more available time than I do. I would just use Chameleon or AudioLayer in this case, because it is much more efficient. That's my whole point with having a single DAW audio track as an AU. Much more time can be spent making music than routing and configuring. It would probably be much more RAM/CPU efficient as well. I love that the possibility to do it is there, but I don't think I would ever spend the time to do it as long as I've got better tools available.
Well, it's 'fart machine time'...

It's 'AUM Sampler' LOL.
Atom triggering C-4 to trigger the AUM FilePlayer and Rozeta LFO controlling the rate...
Such an AUv3 would need to support disk streaming to avoid using up all your AUv3 memory allocation. While many of the suggestions here are useful, it does seem there is still a need and opportunity for an AUv3 app which meets all of the @Audiojunkie specs particular with respect to longer sections of audio. It would seem that being able to use the sample accuracy of AUv3 combined with the AUv3 host’s transport controls and song position should work and be MIDI controlable.
I do this by loading my long samples into AudioLayer or BeatHawk and using Photon or Atom to sequence/trigger the playback. They both disk stream.
I do this in Cubasis.

I ain’t crazy, man.
