I saw Black Violin in concert, and their electric violin setup appears to be completely wireless with minimal to no latency, so I imagine it's possible for guitar but am also curious whether folks on the forum here have recommendations for how to achieve this.
Hi,
I have a Boss Katana Air (which I love for the portability+sound) it uses its own WiFi and comes with a 1/4inch plug for your guitar. It’s not Bluetooth though. Currently I don’t think there is a good BT solution yet, but like you would love to hear if anyone else has news on this
It seems like Bluetooth would have too much latency.
Bluetooth audio has built-in latency because the audio has to be compressed/de-compressed which involves enough buffering and computation on both ends that there is latency.
Btw, MIDI involves much less data--so it doesn't have the same sort of issues that give rise to the inherent latency issues as audio.
No bluetooth, and be aware that 2.4ghz can be a problem when there's too much wifi in the room. I had a line 6 g30 in the past and there were some gigs where it wasn't able to be used. That being said, I know a lot of people that do use them (and the korg one).
I don't know what country you are in, but be aware of what frequencies are legal, in NYC its getting tougher with 600mhz going away in July and increased traffic in the 500 band. You can find frequencies that are free, but sometimes it takes some searching.
I’m in New York too (Buffalo though). Good call about the frequencies - I had forgotten all about that as it’s been a while since I’ve played live. Thank you all for the replies.
You're welcome. Have you run into my former bandmate Harvey Brice up there at all? He was living here but moved to Buffalo about 8 years ago. I know he was doing a lot of shows and other things up there and he was involved in our shutterwax sessions in Maine for a few years.
@mrufino1 unfortunately I haven’t run into Harvey Brice. What does he play?
He plays guitar and does vocals, songwriter, etc.
You'd rather look at the 'thegearpage' or 'gearslutz' forums for this subject.
With that being said:
The Xvive (or Joyo/Harley Benton,...) will work for most of cases. If you're affraid of the 2.4Ghz band, Joyo -JW02 is on 5.8Ghz.
I am using a line 6 G30, and it works fine even in an building crowded with wifi, but I stay at less than 10m fromthe receiver.
A detail to take into consideration : if you're going for a Xvive/etc... with a built-in Li-on battery, you won't be able to play when it dies, while with a Line6 G30, you could instantly change the AA batteries.
I have had Xvive since xmas, works well, easy to setup etc....it does however pick up interference....not sure if this is common to Wireless systems or specific to the Xvive...
When I first used it we still had the xmas tree up and I could hear interference from the tree lights through the Xvive.
Thanks again for the replies - unfortunately the xvive won’t work with my acoustic as it has an active pickup...
Why not?
Yes, also because it s very small the Xvive ( Joyo, HarleyB,...) is more sensitive to EM interferences, but nothing to do with 2.4Ghz here.
@ttk the xvive does not support active pickups according to their documentation and specs online.
Thanks for the info
Yeah, you'll get quite a fuzz when you plug it into an active guitar! It is in the fine print
Oh, OK...
Then go for the line 6 G30.
I ended up giving the Donner WS-3 a try. Should be coming in today. A bit cheaper I know but I’m basically going DI into a sound system. Thank you for the recommendation
+1 line 6 g10, which I use with my electric violins
