Drums sound module for iPad.

Hello,

I am looking for an app for the iPad that can trigger midi notes for my electric drums.

I want to change my drum set sounds from the iPad. GarageBand has drum sets but they have default assignment and can't be changed. I would like to manually change the base for example to another base sound from the app.

Is there any app that does that?

Thank you.

  • You mean an app that will send Midi notes to your electric drums or an app that will receive Midi notes from your electric drums. Sounds like you want sounds from the iPad so I'm guessing receive midi notes and okay sounds on iPad. There are tons but a realistic and flexible app would be Drums XD https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/drums-xd/id488540496?mt=8

You can create your own kits, import your own samples, several different midi options and an all around great app

  • Thank you, Drum XD seems to be the app I am looking for. But the midi portion is very confusing.

Is there a good document on how to assign different drum sounds to a physical pad on my simmon SD Xpress.

I was hoping there is an easy method like picking the sound and then hit a pad on the drum to assign it.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you very much. I looked at the document and was very excited. I had to buy the app in order to activate the midi capability.

I can see the notes triggering my midi in everytime I hit a drum unit.

I tap the learn button and I hit the drums I get a zone assignment. But then nothing happens.

Some drums pad already have the correct sound but I am struggling to use the learn function. Is there a video or something? What am I doing wrong?

What should I do after the learn and what is the zone buttons in midi in and out? I am very disappointed as I already bought the app.

    Thank you for you help.

  • I'm not entirely sure I would suggest emailing the developer I'm sure he'd know what to do and help you figure it out

  • Assigning sounds to drums within the app is nothing to do with MIDI learn. Decide which and how many drums you need to use in the app. Set them up and make sure they all make the correct sound before you start looking at triggering them via MIDI.

  • Thanks PaulB, the problem is that 5 of my 7 pads on my Simmon SDXpress don't have sounds. So how do I assign a sound to those pads?

    Thank you.

  • I know nothing about your Simmons unit.
If you wish to play an app on the iPad by hitting the Simmons pads, then you need to load the sounds in the app, then set the app up to play those sounds when it receives the MIDI messages that the Simmons unit sends when you hit each of its pads.
Conversely, if you wish to have the Simmons unit play its sounds when you hit pads on an iPad app, you need to load the sounds on your Simmons and set up the app to output the correct MIDI messages to activate them when you hit the app's pads.

Which are you trying to do?

  • DrumsXD has the ability to assign the midi channel you want for each drum hit. So, it should work just fine with your Simmons unit. :-)

PaulB, I am trying to do the first thing you described. Hit a pad on my drums and get a sound through drums XD. Therefore I need the learn procedure. Do you know how?

    Thanks.

  • You need to figure out which MIDI note is being played when you hit a drum pad and go to your sound module (iPad) and set the sound you want to hear to be triggered by the same MIDI note.
Sometimes you can change which MIDI notes are triggered on the drums themselves but not always. Read the manual for your drum pads and see if you can change MIDI assignments there if not you'll have to do it on the receiving end (iPad).

Your first step is to get DrumsXD set up so it has all the sounds you want loaded. Then it's as yowza said. If you find out what notes each Simmons pad sends, each DrumsXD pad can be set up using the method shown in the in-app instructions shown below.

  • Thank you very much all for help. I will try that. I thought the built in learn button in drums xd is designed to make this process easy. However, it is nor really passing the correct midi note. Therefore I have to find the note myself.

Another thing I am noticing is a little lag between the hit on the drums and the sound from drums xd. ?! This is really annoying. I don't feel this lag when playing synthesizers or even playing drums in GarageBand.

Is there a way in drums xd to improve this lag?

    Thank you.

  • Learn does not output a note to the Simmons. Learn waits for a note to arrive from the Simmons so that that note can be remembered and correctly interpreted later. The correct sequence should be 1) Activate learn for the app's pad 2) Play the pad on the Simmons 3 ) Assign the note in the app.
