  • Man, I just opened up Cyclop by Surgar Bytes, and I’m not disappointed. Their apps have so many little nuances to tweak, you can spend days just working on a single patch.

  • This is just a roll-call really otherwise I'll be rabbiting on&on&on, but the basic criteria for inclusion is that the developer in question has created at least 2 apps that's always front of mind, or in some rare cases it's a developer that only has one app, but the app in question is top of the tree in it's own sub category...

In no specific order: Zerodebug, Kymatica, apeSoft, Korg, Moog, Brambos, PPG, Icegear, Beepsoft, Kira Q Tech, Marcos Kohler, Laurent Colson, Audeonic Apps, Olympia Noise Co, Cem Olcay, Numerical Audio, Alexandernaut, VirSyn, AudioKit Pro, Frederic Corvest, Audio Damage, Audiobus/A Tasty Pixel, Synthetic Bits, Arturia, Klevgrand, Fabfilter, Aphelian Labs, Confusion Studios, Liine, Hexler, Sonosaurus, Imaginando, anthony saunders, Alexander Zolotov, AffinityBlue, tempo rubato, bismark, Marcos Alonso, Blip Interactive, Steinberg, Abigail Macfarlane, Malcolm Mugglin, Wavelabs, Delta-V Audio and finally Chris Carlson.

Having looked to that list, the thing that has surprised me most is that I probably have a bigger pool of iOS developers that I follow closely than desktop developers. And I'm very much a desktop producer. It just goes to show the level of innovation that's happening in the iOS space in a relatively short space of time.

Here's to the next ten years of iOS innovation. 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you very much for taking the time to type all of your recommendations out, I appreciate it. When I have money again, you’ve given me a great deal to look forward to, awesome!

sugar bytes apps have been among my favorites as well, even though I’m generally not into the type of musics their apps are aimed at. I like things that push me out of my comfort zone.

Korg probably shares the top spot, for the opposite reason — I’m most at home with Gadget and their synths...it’s comfort food to me. Moog is a close 2nd.

Fabfilter is easily my favorite effect/tool designer, was introduced to them for the first time through Auria Pro, and just recently picked up the fabulous mixing bundle during their desktop sale. If all their plugins were available through AUV3, I probably wouldn’t have a need to buy many more effects/mixing or mastering tools on iOS.

Too many favorite indies to mention all and I don’t like to rank them, as they’re equally brilliant to me
Klevgrand, Audio Damage, VirSyn, Anton Corvest FAC, Bram Bos, Olympia Noise, Blip Interactive all get top billing on my ipad.

I’m also a huge fan of grooveboxes and probably wouldn’t use iOS half as much without these brilliant apps:(in no particular order)
    Propellerhead: Figure
    Aphelian Labs: Aphelian, Oscilab
    Luuk Van Der Graaff: Beatonal
    JimAudio: Grooverider
    Ampify: Groovebox
    Zaplin: Triqtraq
    Rejean Poirer: Caustic
    Oliver Greshke: Elastic Drums
    Rob Wilmot: 6X806
    Rodrigo Yanez: seekbeats
    Techne Media: Different Drummer

All my FX favorites have been mentioned so I wanted to consider who has not, yet.

I like simulations of real musical hardware.

There are some great developers that do great work in the area of interfaces and "real world" simulation/modeling:

    1. MIDI Guitar 2 converts audio to MIDI events with reasonable delay (latency)
    2. Yonac's ToneStack and Galileo Organ. Great synths too.
    3. Gospel Musician's Neo Soul Rhodes and now their Bassalicious 2.
    4. Korg's Module
    5. Bias Amp simulations (generally considered the best)
    6. IK Multimedia: currently selling 43 classic hardware synths for $1.17 each
    7. CrudeBytes
    8. UVI
    9. LumBeats
  • If not for GarageBand , ThumbJam, soundprism and jimmy fallons loopy demo ...I would never have been into iOS

If you do any guitar work on pc/Mac, there’s an awesome company called Mercuriall that make the best amp sims I’ve ever heard, just outstanding.

It looks like they produced an app called "Amp ONE for IOS" back in 2014 and it lives on in the free Amp ONE App. I'm sure I downloaded it at some point being free and all.

For real, thank you so very much for bringing this to my attention, I had absolutely no idea that Mercuriall has done anything for iOS, their stuff is so awesome IMO, I haven’t tried it yet, but I just downloaded it, and may in fact have to try something really crazy like picking an actual guitar up again just to try it out. I could gush about Mercuriall all day long, I think they’re a Ruskie outfit, and their offerings are top notch, just unbelievably great, and even they’re paid apps are not that expensive.

I haven’t used many apps in my projects but I would say SynthMaster One duo @kv331audio_bulent and @lbiyikoglu . They nailed most of the suggestions in just a few weeks with listening to the feedback form the community and made their first cut SM1 app which was painful to use into a very usable app. Plus, they ported a desktop synth to iOS as-is on iPad and soon on iPhone and also Android with plans to port their original SynthMaster beast to iOS too.

And @analog_matt for coming up with an ambitious and painstaking open source standard for iOS with AudioKit!

  • I’ve been digging into Cyclop from Sugar Bytes, and MAN, what an awesome platform! I have mostly worked with Native Instruments products on PC inside of Reaper, and I can honestly say that an iOS product, at least to my ears, gives Massive an absolute run for its money. I had absolutely no idea what iOS was capable of. I’m getting my pc back up and running tomorrow (hopefully, as long as it’s only the cooler that’s in need of repair), and I can say with absolute confidence, that aside from Maschine MK3, I will be working in iOS all day tomorrow, and as far as I can see from here. Everything I try that’s new to me in iOS, has left me nothing short of shockingly impressed. I had absolutely no idea that iOS was capable of all this. I’m actually more than a little disappointed that I’ve had this iPad 10.5” sitting around collecting dust (after my drone{Phantom 4 Pro}, had stopped working), for almost an entire year. Who would have ever thought,(except those already working in iOS), that iOS was at this level of both ability, and potential. I’m just very, very excited, because I had previously fell into a rut musically, and have basically making the same song over and over again, for at least the last three, or four months on pc. To find your way out of a creative slump, especially one that has literally gone on for months, is just a very good feeling. I feel like I did when I got my first electric guitar, back when I was a spoiled child (kinda like the way I still am, lol), in high school.

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know if it’s possible to record with AUM in Auria Pro? When I get it set up in stand-alone mode inside of Auria Pro, I have so far been unable to get sound out of it. If it’s possible, do you have to route in a certain way?

Assuming you’ve added AUM Port 1 to an Auria Pro Midi track and want to send midi to a plugin in Auria Pro...

    1. Set the midi input for the app you want to play to IAA Port 1 (it should show in the list with the Auria icon next to it).
    2. Replace the Speaker output in the AUM channel you want to hear in Auria with IAA / Audiobus Output > IAA Output 1

There are other configurations. This is just my best guess at what you’re trying to do.

Are you loading AUM into a Stereo track, or a Midi Track?

I’m attempting to do it in midi both in Auria Pro, and also in AUM, and I’ve also tried it with midi in AP, but audio in AUM (which was probably silly to even try?). Would it work with using audio only in both AP, and in AUM? I’m used to working only with midi because my timing is so bad, and I usually have to quantize everything. However, after using Maschine MK3, and being forced to work with audio only, in the base version of Auria, my timing has actually improved to the point where I now have confidence to work with audio only, so it would not bother me if AUM only works with audio waves. AUM is truly a masterpiece, so if it means that I have to work with audio tracks only, I will absolutely step up in order to be able to use AUM with AP. And most of all, thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it when people take time away from the things they could be doing instead to help out an old fool like myself.

Please check out my post above, which I re-edited while you were posting yours. It may answer your question. But if not, please explain what you’d like to do, and I can probably tell you how to do it.

AUM is an awesome app, and I’m sure I’m missing something obvious, but it would sure be awesome to get it to work.

What about step 2? Did you do that?

  • Moog for showing me that iPad apps can sound as good as (or better than) their desktop equivalent.

Korg for making working on iOS not a pain in the butt (also hurray for export to Ableton).

  • @wim Your instructions seem clear, yet some how, I’m not getting it to work. When I choose IAA Port 1 in AUM, which in the selection options shows up, and I choose it, afterwards, the Auria icon is not shown at the bottom. I’m pretty much an idiot in iOS at this point, so I’m missing something totally obvious, that’s right in front of my face somehow. Thank you for all the guidance, I will get it figured out.

  • @wim Hey, I think I have it figured out I was trying to load a midi channel in AUM, instead of an audio channel , but as soon as I switched to an audio channel in AUM, it works. Told you I was an idiot, lol.
