Sortable Data Lists
I saw the app list entry on the wiki by @McDtracy
https://wiki.audiob.us/apps
It points to the need to develop a way to create an information database for various types of knowledge that can be sorted by various criteria which can be updated on a regular basis. A wiki isn’t the easiest way to present information that can be sorted by various criteria versus a database which can.
For example, lists of apps sorted by synthesis method or iOS features such as IAA, AU, Link, etc....
Tim Webb has taken this sort of task on for apps with:
https://discchord.com/appDB
Storing the information in a spreadsheet type database might be a quick and dirty way of accomplishing this but I can’t help think there might be a more straight forward way than this.
Database Considerations
- What information do we store?
- How often do we update the information?
- How do we sort and publish subsets of the information in a useful way?
- How do we convert information in the database to a wiki friendly format?
- Should we consider some other web based solution and point to it on the wiki rather than trying to post the information directly on the wiki?
- Is there a way to allow the user to select their criteria and then display the results?
Comments
@InfoCheck : Dokuwiki has some plugins that allow tagging and dynamic tables based on tags. For the free apps list, it isn’t clear to me that a free apps page is the optimal way to go if tagging gets turned on (it seems not to be on). If tagging becomes an option, one could add a free tag to any app’s wiki page and have the free apps page simply be a dynamic index of the pages tagged with ”free”.
Also, there may be some pages/topics where it makes more sense to link to an external site that has the existing content if there is such a site that handles it well.
Here’s a Dokuwiki plugin which might solve any sort of database type entry and display we might need?

Here’s an example showing a data entry form:

Wiki Tags may be an easier way to address the problem of trying to find what we want in different ways rather than trying to use a database or create long hard to update lists. Each page added to the wiki would have tags added to it to help people access the information more easily. The link above is to a wiki page about the topic.
