  • Any skull candy in ears within the budget. Simply because they provide more bass then stock in ears, that and a couple of reference tracks, you MIGHT get a decent mix.

    What's wrong with Beats?

They have a predefined EQ which is boosted heavy in the bass freqs. Most consumer headphones have some coloring of the audio to some degree. Here's an example. Imagine your headphones like the EQ settings for car stereos, iPods and such. Pop, Jazz, Rock and Flat are usually used to describe these. Each one sounds different. Some have more bass or whatever.

A flat EQ is what you'd want for mixing and production as it allows you to hear all frequencies evenly. The sounds will be properly balanced in your music, whereas if you had bass heavy response headphones your song probably would sound thin on anything but those bass heavy headphones. Though unlike car radios you cannot choose an EQ setting with a pair of headphones. Would be nice if that were the case! This is just a rough explanation though. Hope it made sense!
