I don't mind universal symbols but when American native-English speakers use this is just strikes me as lazy and/or trying to be unique.
I didn't like it when Prince did it - still don't. Not sure why it rankles me - probably just the bitter old man in me - but it does. To each his own, but you'll never see me do that. Hell, I only JUST started using short hand in my texts. For the longest time, they had correct punctuation and grammar.
