Auria or/and Cubasis

I have every Audiobus app going so far apart from Cubasis, seeing as I already have Auria is it worth getting Cubasis? What are the benefits it has over Auria other than Midi?

Also as this is my first post I'd to say a massive thanks to the Audiobus guys for everything you've done/doing for the ios music scene, you've more than doubled the value of the existing apps I had.

  • I would say less cpu entensive and better ui.

  • +1 less CPU and better UI

I love Auria but couldn't resist buying cubasis as well andi did not regret. It's a pleasure to work with, the UI is by far the best i've seen in such an app on iOS.It's so easy to start in Cubasis with virtual midi and record the results via audiobus and then i export it to arrange and mix in Auria which will always have a place cause i bought a lot of the amazing plugins.I know Midi is coming later to Auria but i decided that it's not bad at all to have a choice where i want to be creative in that moment (i mean when cubasis has the most important missing features like automation and a proper EQ).

the less CPU thing is easy, the effects in Cubasis are not worth to mention.Although they sound at least better than in Beatmaker.Auria is not THAT hungry if you work with the internal FX (besides the convolution reverb but even this one eats nothing on an iPad 4) but if you fire up especially the Fabfilter plugins...things getting busier then ;)

  • have both. Cubasis is more responsive, no input matrix to deal with, simple media management - just a few of the things I like better.

  • I like the idea of using Auria just to arrange and master, but how easy is it to import from Cubasis? Is it track by track recording, audiocopy or a simple import option? I have used 14 tracks in Auria so far, 6 of them with plugin fx (only stero delay and conv reverb) and only hit 26% CPU so I have not found it to be too CPU hungry so far. The 3 main things drawing me towards Cubasis are Midi support, being families to the pc version of Cubase and hearing lots of people saying how well it works with Audiobus. Thanks for the opinions guys, I think I will chance it and just have both, after all I did just buy a bigger iPad for more apps and samples :)

You have to Mixdown (or copy them to the media bay once) the tracks in Cubasis first.Which makes sense if you do further edits in Cubasis (after you recorded them via audiobus). But Cubasis has a stem export function (all tracks at once in different files) and both support the sonoma pasteboard which holds 12 copied files at once.So,copy/paste is not really an exhausting task.

btw, steinberg made some great tutorial videos. They explain everything very well.

  • Or Dropbox, etc

  • True.I always forgot about those things as my first look goes to possibilities that i can use without an internet connection.

If you just record live to iPad ,stay with Aria. But if you also use app record through audiobus to your daw .You better use Cubasis for smoother performance.
At this time Cubasis support Audiobus far more better than Aria.

  • Automation had got to be considered as a differentiator at the moment. Cubasis doesn't have any and whilst you can work around using clip levels and fades its not the same. So if mixer and effects automation is important in how you get to a polished sound in your tracks this will be a problem with Cubasis. If not you're good to go.

  • Someone can say me the difference of CPU intensive on iPad 2?
I have Auria & before buy Cubase I want to know if I can Work more better then Auria on my 2...

  • I try now with Meteor and Works Good with Virtual Midi & AudioBus (1 instrument at time) and have Midi Sync....and now for me that have iPad 2 it's a good option for not spend other 47€....I spend more money for Auria & FabFilter and I spend other 50€ only when Ableton make an iOS version :-)

  • "When Ableton make an iOS version"

    ...we can but dream :)

  • I'm thinking about Cubasis because your comments seem to indicate that it is more midi friendly, but would really like to know how much space it's going to take on my ipad. I'm assuming there is a pretty big hit with some of the virtual instruments. I hope to use Audiobus and other virtual instruments and hope there is enough room to hold everything. I'm going to be traveling sometime later this summer and some of the time be pretty remote, so I won't have access to a computer or the net to store stuff off the ipad. I hope to be writing some music and I"ll also be doing a lot of pictures, so my concern is if the 64 gig iPad 3 will have enough room to hold everything I want to take along.

For example the really big memory hogs are:

    1. Spotify @ 2.2GB- which I don't understand because I don't have any songs local.
    2. CoPilot GPS @ 1.8 GB - It has the whole North America GPS maps loaded
    3. Notion Music @ 1.6 GB - Virtual instruments???
    4. Videos @ 1.5 GB - Can dump what's on the ipad, but need space for trip
    5. Music @1.2GB - Can dump and put on iPOD
    6. Tabletop @ 833MB - Will probably dump if I Cubasis
    7. Garage Band @689MB - fresh install but will probably keep for the instruments.

That's close to 10 GB, plus another 6 being used by other apps. I will do some "house cleaning" before I go!!!

So how much will I need to give up to Cubasis?? Is Auria smaller?? Can you use virtual instruments through Audiobus with Auria like you can with Cubasis??

  • Cubasis uses about 800 mb.

  • BM2>Cubasis IMHO

  • Cubasis is by no means a finished product but in terms of simply getting apps working together via Audiobus and Midi this is definitely my vision of how it should be, albeit without the (hopefully coming to an update soon) great effects/extensive midi/slick midi editor/vst's...etc...

  • And no automation at all.Still a bummer. At least Midi thru and Clock sync is coming with the next update.

  • All I ask is that they 'undo' the ruddy bug(z)

If it ain't gotcha yet,..it soon will

  • Yeah back up your stuff REGULAR or prepare to destroy your ipad in fit of rage when you lose your last 2 hrs of work quick as a flash....

  • Well,i do own (and love)both apps but Auria destroyed M.U.C.H. more than 2 hours of my work recently.Fabfilter"introduced"a huge bug in the 1.08 update and i was the idiot to find it out.Just sayin, nobody is perfect...

  • Yeah i definetly feel for you @Crabman. Auria is a work in progress for sure but since 1.09/1 It has been loads more stable but the fear is will they trip over something else whilst pushing new features ?

Cutting edge isn't always glamorous :)

  • Sounds like both programs can be great or horrific. I just lost 6 hours of work on Cubasis. It is the first time I've used it and my file became corrupted overnight and is no longer usable, needless to say I am not a happy customer. These programs need to focus on not getting in the way of the creative process. Right now, it doesn't sound like either is quite there. I'm stuck with a $50 app that I absolutely cannot trust.

I've just installed Cubasis in my second iPad and its 291MB (as in Settings/Usage), in default condition.

I've never had those problems, but it's getting me worried.
So I'm back with Beatmaker and doing the mix in Auria till these problems are gone.
And editing Audio in BM is much easier anyway, its drum machine is better, its sampler is fantastic, etc...

  • Cubasis forum is littered with people experiencing problems with the undo bug and losing whole projects...I would wait it out for Cubasis....

  • Anyone in the Chicago area especially with access to West Burbs who has a lot of experience producing with an iPad 4 (I have 64 GB Retina with a Mac Mini 2.6 GHz i7 Quad Core, 6MB Level 3 Cache, Maxed out 16GB 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM and 1 TB Fusion Drive) do any teaching/studio set up help? Please email me at: [email protected] with your qualifications and prices. Have a hard time getting this thing up and Running with Reason 7.0.1 and Novation SL MKII 49 Key MIDI Controller Keyboard.I use a TC Electronics Desktop Konnekt 6 As Audio Interface and iConnectivity2+ as MIDI Interface (which has yet to work since it came with 30-pin cable, and I purchased Apple Brand 30-pin to Lightning Adapter with no Luck-about return). Thanks!

Uninstall and reinstall spotify, that should help that usage. I think it builds up a cache over time. The recent update knocked my spotify usage from 500mb back down to where it should be, also no local files.

Also, if near a computer, try the app call "phoneclean," it cleans out the various caches, sometimes frees up a lot of space.

  • For storing/accessing files while away from a computer/internet, I'd recommend this...

    http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive/iUSBport/

  • Are there known apps which support this? Does one of the DAWs? Potentialy it's great but without support we can only wait with bad alternatives such as Dropbox.

  • I assume you're referring to the USBPort. There's a free app available that works with this. Also, Safari can be used.
