Recording audio/vocals in GarageBand

Hi can anyone help?

I am recording a vocal line through GarageBand behind a guitar and bass etc but when I go to record the harmony line on a new track I get the other tracks I.e bass & guitar and first vocal coming through the audio recorder ( noticed by the needle on the meter going mad) any solutions pls? Cheers. Do I have to mute tracks and monitor?

  • You're using iRig, aren't you?

  • No actually I'm using the iPads built in mic. Is this where I'm going wrong?. I do have a condenser mic hooked up to my sound card which I would normally use when doing desktop daw stuff. Would GarageBand recognise it if I used that? I have the camera connection kit which I use for the synth apps controlled via my controller keyboard. Cheers.

  • Yeah, you need to isolate the audio being recorded from the previously recorded audio.
Earbuds that have a mic in line work decent, but an audio interface is best for more serious recording quality.
The newer Apple earpods are actually pretty good at recording acoustic instruments and voice, but have a tendency to pick up noise created by touching or moving the cable.

  • Ya, you need to use headphones to record voice. Any headphones will work and you can still use the ipads mic to get your voice into garage band.

  • Yeah thanks guys. It works perfect with the headphones on isolating the audio from the other tracks. Thanks for the replies.
