Does midi file import work for you in Drum Session and Drum Perfect Pro?

I want to edit and arrange midi drum tracks on an iPad. It's easy to get the midi files to AudioShare.

The files play correctly in an app called Drum Studio, but that app isn't really what I want to use for editing.

The files import easily into Xequence 2. I can then point X2 to Drum Session or Drum Perfect Pro to play the tracks that way. I like the editing features in X2.

I would still like to be able to import the files into DPP and DS.

I can see the imported files in DPP, but I can't get any sound from them.

In DS I can't even get to the imported files. According to the Files App the imported files are sitting there in the User Patterns folder, but then when I go to that folder within DS the files aren't visible.

For now I just to find if other people can successfully import midi files into DPP and DS. If it does work then I'll stick with it until I figure it out. If it doesn't work then I'll just stick with X2.

  • Never thought of that myself. I think honestly the best way is to use X2. It’s designed perfectly for midi and DS is sometimes unstable but I do send midi to it and works great! Especially midi that was created by Rock Drummer.

  • Yeah I'm having fun with Rock Drum Machine/Funk Drummer into X2, once I turned off the quantize setting in X2.

The main reason I'm interested in importing midi files into DPP is something that's mentioned in the manual. It says you can do a bunch of humanization editing to the files. I'd like to try that, but first I have to figure out how to hear the midi files in DPP.

  • There are some tricks to importing midi files in DPP. First of all, you need to be sure to tell it which channel to look at when importing. Some files are on ch 10, some ch 1, some on others. Second, sometimes the octave is off on drum midi files. If you have one that works, check it in another program, then check against one that doesn't. See if the octave the notes are on is the same in each file. If they're off you either need to transpose the file outside of DPP and save it, or you need to change the note mapping for the kit you're using.

Drum Session I've never worked with enough (too crashy for my taste). Sorry, can't help there.

If you want to try posting a file that you're having trouble with I can mess around with it. I think you have to zip midi files to be able to post them here though. Or put them in dropbox if you have it and send the link.

Don't have drum session so can't help you with that. I just imported a midi drum file into DDP and it worked like a charm. But not all midi files will work right off the bat in DDP. Maybe you can post a midi file here so I can see if I can get it to work in DDP.

  • In case it's a problem with the MIDI channel: note that when Xequence exports a MIDI file, it uses the channel that has been configured for the respective instrument each track points to.

  • Thanks for the information. Now that I know the DPP will work I will look into the channels and transposing. I'll try to figure it and report back in a day or two. I also might have some new questions by then.

  • Just as an update, I've made progress with Drum Perfect Pro. Transposing midi files has worked to make them audible. I haven't necessarily transposed them correctly to the right drums yet, but that can be worked out over time. I like the sound of DPP. There's a unique set of controls. It will take some time to figure out all the options.

I still haven't been able to play imported midi files in Drum Session. According to the Files app the midi files are in the right user folder, but they just aren't visible. That could be a simple fix. The good news is that midi export from Drum Session works well. The best part about DS is that it's so quick and easy to arrange the app's existing midi files on the timeline. It's easy to edit new variations of those existing midi files. Then I can export the midi to wherever I want.

Both DPP and DS are good buys overall. Considering what I've spent on drum sets and electronic drums and drum VSTs and expansion packs over the years, iPad drum apps are real bargains. Patterning 2 is amazing all by itself. I'm bound to have more questions along the way, but for now I'm satisfied with my progress.
