Why does AudioLayer do this?
Hi!
I’ve asked some stuff about AudioLayer recently but this is on another subject. And since the creator never answers his emails I’ll have to ask here instead. The app constantly does this:

Makes instruments go into the cloud. This is very strange since I don’t keep them in iCloud, but on the phone. I’ve tried several times deleting one of these “iCloud” instruments and made new ones based on the EXS file and samples that I keep on my phone. But this just happens over and over again. The reason this is annoying is that I then have to download them again and sometimes it takes forever and crashes the app. And no, the instruments aren’t large by any means. AudioLayer has some great features, but no support, crashes and stuff makes it quite hard to work with.

Personally I do feel that cloud services are not reliable places to store 'active/inuse' samples and patches for apps as we do not have any control over when stuff gets pushed to the cloud and removed from the device forcing us to download the files before use.
Audiolayer in particular seems to suffer from this with way too frequent downloads of patches before being able to use them...
It is set to load presets into iCloud by default.

You can turn that off by tapping on settings and scrolling down.
But if you turn that function off, for some reason you can’t use Audioshare or AudioCopy import function, as it won’t import the audio from pasteboard, but I will open the mini files App window, which makes no sense in my humble opinion.
Here is a video description of the “issue”
This is what I get when I’ve turned iCloud storage off in AudioLayer:
Nothing at all. Again: these instruments that are now gone are from my local storage on the phone. I don’t understand at all what’s happening. If they would’ve been on my iCloud Drive all along that would make sense, but since I’ve made my instruments from the local storage on my phone this is just wacko.
EDIT: And yeah, I also get this when I want to import samples with iCloud off:
Yeah. I only use cloud storage for zipped Logic project files and the likes as well as samples to quickly get access to them on the go. But I always transfer them before use, such as with making instruments in AudioLayer. Which however works like a charm (whenever AudioLayer works 🤣).
You know what guys. I started everything from scratch with iCloud off in the app, reloaded every instance of the instruments in GarageBand and after some tweaking everything works now 🙂 Finally!
Ok so what are the proper steps to follow?
Download everything then disable cloud?
Yes, you have to manually export the instrument (and samples) with iCloud on, then turn off iCloud and re-import. It does work but it's laborious and tedious.
But (my opinion), worth it. In my brief time using the iCloud feature, I found it problematic since I don't always have internet available.
Oh ok but how do we import if iCloud is off? There’s no user folder?
The Instrument export file exists wherever you put it regardless of iCloud sync. (I meant turn off iCloud sync within AL.)
Please forgive my ignorance. Ok I created a sample from a Kick Drum. I turned off iCloud. I load up AL and my kick drum is there. But if I go to the Files app, there’s no AL folder outside of iCloud and my kick drum is not in the iCloud folder.
So in effect iCloud needs to forcibly be enabled always I guess. I’m new to this app and sampling altogether so it’s really confusing. Maybe I should just get a refund.
The AudioDabbler has a YouTube video that shows how to do it. I think you briefly have to turn iCloud on till it creates the needed folder on the iPad and then after that you can just use the Files app.

Perfect timing 😌
On the iphone I reinstalled the app and tried from scratch. I was able to save my drum kick sample but when I tap the load instruments within the app, it auto goes through a bunch of folders till it gets to the preset.
And when I load it up in AUM I can’t even see the name of the preset as it’s like showing the location like a long name. Will try to upload a pic.
Weird thing is it doesn’t do this on the iPad.
Update: iPad also😌
Here’s the pic:
You should email the developer and include the picture and directions. While he rarely writes back, he does read the email and has fixed quite a few bugs. Hopefully, if he hears from people, he'll be inspired to release his current version.
So how does everyone recall their presets? Do you go to the Files app and select them from there?
I deleted the app and reinstalled it fresh!
Disabled iCloud and disabled install of iCloud instruments.
First thing I did was to create a dummy instrument and saved under the name of “placeholder” this is so that AL will create a folder in the Files App called AudioLayer.
Downloaded the Stratocaster EXS file from one of the links above and followed the Audiodabbler’s instructions and bam! Worked perfectly! I loved how AL automatically loaded everything up!
Will try creating my own now but the Stratocaster EXS instrument is amazing!
Audiolayer has a preset menu that you can use to recall your instruments.
Thanks! Just wasn’t happy I couldn’t see the name of the presets but instead the location address which is weird. But it works flawlessly with imported EXS files.
