Best sampler that’s midi-triggerable?
Hi all
I want to buy some one-shot samples and host them in AUM (or, if I must, AB3), and be able to trigger them in Xequence 2, using the built-in midi mapping. What’s the most effective app for this purpose? Anyone know? Would Koala be suitable? I’ve been clocking that app for a little while but haven’t been sure if it would do what I want it to do. So, to reiterate: I want to play samples from X2 but the host for the sampler app (one shots, not loops) would be AUM. I have in mind a sampler app that would allow 8 (say) different samples to be triggered from within X2 via different keys. Sorry for the repetition here...!
Thanks in advance.

Audiolayer or Chameleon?
(I dont have either)
If you don't have the need to transpose the samples you could always use the File Player in AUM and map a note to start the playback...
4Pockets Chameleon should do the trick.
I’ve been using Chameleon for this, and it has a pad interface which is good for triggering one shot samples.
The main drawback is that the max length of samples is quite short. I can’t recall off hand but I think it’s either 8 or 16 secs.
Thanks, all. I’ve go Chameilon so will try that. @Samu , I’ve used the file player to trigger samples in X2 so that might work - I’ll give it a go. It’s just that I’d have to have 8 different samples loaded across individual nodes, which seems a bit more fussy that I would like (ideally_. I’ll also check out audiolayer 👍
Can you map particular samples to particular keys?
Yeah Audio layer, Chameleon or Enso could do that. Reslice and Elsa could do it as well if you put all the samples into one file.
Thanks. I’ve got Enso and reslice, too, so will check these various things out and try to come up with the most effective solution. I adore X2 but I do wish there was some kind of sampler in it, too. I know the dev is thinking about this issue, though, and am confident he’ll sort something more reliable out at some point. But, for now, I’ll tinker with the excellent suggestions outlined above 👍
Each File Player can be triggered by a specified note so in theory you could create X number of tracks in AUM and trigger each of the file-players with a specific note...
Excellent, thanks, Samu. I’m going to be busy tonight, checking out all these various options...!
Like this...

Disable 'sync' as it will wait for the next 'quantum'.
In this example C4 triggers the loop...

Good luck...
Worth to note is that when 'loop' is disabled (good for one shots) the play enable isn't disabled when the sample has played to the end meaning a double trig is need to play it again. (I consider this a 'bug' since Play should be disabled once the file has been played thru).
Also AUM can sometimes feel a bit laggy if the sample is rapidly triggered...
If the ApeMatrix 'Sampler AUv3' triggered notes from the beginning instead of continuing playback from the last position it could also be an option... (And it's also 'buggy' when using the AUM keyboard so it needs an alternate way to trigger it like KB-1).
@Audio_DT I think you have NS2, right? Slate is ideal for this. NS2 can be hosted in AUM.
Yeah, BeatHawk works quite well too if 16 samples per instance is enough...
But all in all, there's still plenty of room on the market for AUv3 samplers
Yeah you can map multiple samples into one preset and have each sample mapped however you like.
You can press then ‘learn’ in the sample editor page and Chameleon will ask you to press a midi key for root note, lowest key and highest key. For single shot samples you just press the same MIDI key three times and then you have your key assigned. You can use the built in keyboard for this.
If you want to be able to pitch your sample you, say, put the root at c3 and the low key to c2 and the high to c4. This will let you play the sample over a two octave range. The lower octave would play a sample at exActly half speed and the high octave at exactly double speed.
The pads screen will automatically have your single Shot sample available on a pad.
I'm running multiple instances of AudioLayer and using it as a drum machine in AUM.
I really tried to like AudioLayer when it was released but a simple task as replacing a sample in an existing instrument (to for example test how different snare samples would work in a sequenced beat) or even previewing the sample using the keyboard while trimming after sampling it just made me forget about it.
There's nothing on iOS that comes even remotely close to the 'Ableton Simpler' when it comes to quick and easy semi-flexible sampling apart from BM3 but that's overkill for most use-cases.
So yeah, I would pay premium for Ableton Simpler AUv3 with drag-n-drop from the Files.app...
Excellent - cheers. Yes, I would pay for a really solid AUV3 sampler, too. I'm also hoping that iPadOS will see the emergence of a more tightly integrated 'midi preview' player, if that's the right term, so that one can quickly preview how a midi pattern would sound in one's song, without having to first load the midi pattern. That would be great because there is tons of stuff I would buy (midi drum patterns, etc.) that are just a bit fiddly to use on iOS at present, unless I'm missing something. Thanks again :-)
Yes I have NS2 - thanks for the heads-up, I'll give it a go, too. Gonna be a long night :-)
I don't yet have AudioLayer but may well purchase it if the stuff I try out this evening doesn't quite fit the bill. Thanks.
A wonderful community, this, as ever. Thanks to all, and I mean that.
There is also Beat-Machine , a free drum(&synth)machine that has midi mapping for notes (not pitch) . But you are limited to 16 samples per bank (only one bank & it’s not AU) .
It can also load files from AudioShare
I do use AudioLayer all the time, but I still agree with this. AL is not the sampler we've been looking for.
Are you using standalone or AU? I have a template setup in AUM, with each AU instance assigned to a specific note range. I can then trigger these using Octachron. To swap out a sample, I just use the in-built Files app / browser in the AU to pull samples from local or iCloud or Dropbox. Curious where you're running into issues or perhaps our use cases are different.
If you will try NS2, don't forget that by defaut every track is set to receive MIDI on all channels and only when it is selected - if you want to use NS2 as multitimbral module in AUM, after you add new track with slate or obsidian in NS, go to mixer settings and select just corresponding midi channel you want to use for that track and change to "Track receives midi: ALWAYS"
AUv3 mostly but I puzzles my why AudioLayer didn't include features from ReSlice as that could have lifted it up a notch.
Ie. load a sample, set a few slice points and map them to the keyboard.
Of you haven't yet given the Ableton Simpler a spin it's worth a look. Sure it's not one for those that need loads of layers and keyboard splits etc. but for manipulating and getting the most out of a single sample it's hard to beat...
This. Half the reason I bought NS2.
It works well for it too, AUM file player gets glitchy if you're using too much CPU.
Ah, I'm guessing this is the reason Virsyn keeps the two apps unique. I've used Sampler in Ableton more than an Simpler and I guess I see Reslice as a version of Simpler vs Sampler as AudioLayer.
My annoyance with Reslice is that you can't use Files browser like AudioLayer, heh.
But you can do 'drag'n'drop' from the Files.app slide-over at least to the AUv3...
Another minor annoyance with ReSlice is that it's not possible to play a slice chromatically like an instrument.
The slices can be transposed and sequenced using the arpeggiator but not 'played' as an instrument.
Oh well, at least the market for AU3v samplers is not over-saturated yet
Haha, yeah. Oh yeah, slide over mode, almost never use this, but i guess I should.
