Is there a way to make a complete song using AUM and AU’s

  • I still find that I make most of my finished pieces with Ableton as I mostly like to have tons of samples on a timeline that I chop up, fade, loop into some sort of structure and I find it far too clumsy to try that on my little iPad with the available options… I mostly use the iPad as a nice little gumbo to make those samples, and/or as sound module/FX box as well as controller, and sequencer for hardware…

For me the best workflow so far is to use AUM + AUv3s to create solid 4 or 8 bar loops and find settings within the plugins that can create interesting variations. I also use busses with filters and other effects to create extra layers that can be used to increase the energy or density.

Once I'm happy with the sequence or 8 bar loop and know wehre to toggle the variations I record all tracks (including the busses) in AUM and dump it into Ableton for arrangement.

What's nice about this workflow is that you can develop a AUM project let's say over a week and record at different stages and with different plugin combinations to increase the available variations when you arrange the track.

I'm struggling to progress from jamming in loops to composing (near) complete songs within AUM. I feel like I'm looking for a "song mode"-style workflow, and ideally I'd like to keep it within AUM.

Something like 4Pockets MIDI Mixer looks like a step in the right direction, but I haven't tried it yet. It seems like it would allow me to toggle back and forth between 8 different snapshots of varying parameter levels. So for instance, if I want the filter frequency to start off low at the beginning of a composition and then open up to higher frequencies at a later point, I could save those levels as snapshots and then press a button to jump from one to the other while I'm jamming. And I could sync up the changes in the filter level with changes in the volume of another track, so that when I trigger a snapshots, all the parameters that I've assigned move together to whatever level I programmed for each one.

Cem Olcay's PatternBud MIDI CC Sequencer looks like it has basically the same functionality as MIDI Mixer (to the extent that I've described it above), just with a different interface. I'm not sure if it can do anything that the other can't, or vice versa. I haven't tried it out myself. But the price is better!

I'm still looking for something like a very slow LFO or envelope with a highly customizable shape that I could use to draw automation that would occur over the span of say, 32 or 64 bars, and either loop automatically (as an LFO) or play when manually triggered (as envelope). Not sure what the best way to do this would be. I'm sure there's some way to do it in Drambo, but I'm hoping for a solution that's a little more ready-to-use straight out the box.

  • LK and Drambo are the closest imo (Clips on a vertical timeline).
LK feels a bit more like Ableton when in use, it also has better MIDI import/export, while Drambo is unbeatable in terms of sequence modulation, MIDI effects and potential generative power.
For actual composition from scratch and when I don't want to spend much time, Gadget still looks like the best option though.

@aaa Drambo's Graphic Modulator module does exactly that: You can draw any shape, adjust its speed from fast down to as slow as 32 bars (and slower if you use speed values like 0.25 etc.) and use it to control anything.

  • Koala Sampler?

Run your audio files from AUM/Audioshare into Koala Sampler, and use MIDI to trigger the specific audio scenes.

AUM + Koala Sampler is the match made in heaven.

I also made the “Send Audio to App” shortcut on Routinehub to help with the workflow. Drag and drop does work too.

  • @aaa i think that’s a problem many run into at some point, even if only for a little while. I surely have that issue off and on. There’s lots of great videos on YouTube about this very topic.

Since I come from a guitar background I like to write with chords/riffs a lot of the time. I like to write a lot of different ways, sometimes no chords at all, but my go to method is chords. It sets up a background that allows you to build on top of the track. Once you have one part of the song, let’s just say 4 chords, in 4/4, It’s not quite as hard to come up with a second progression or riff, let’s say 4 more chords 1 bar each. Now you have pattern A and Pattern B. You can switch between the two as a Verse/Chorus.

This isn’t an exact solution but it helps me with those song changes.

Let me see if I can find the video I watched recently

It feels like there is something missing. Is there not an AU that I can easily connect to AU’s running in AUM. Maybe something that can trigger scenes, something with a song mode? I haven’t been looking out much for the last 6 months so maybe I’ve missed something?

Edit: I guess it can be IAA as long as you can use it alongside AUM

For me personally, Helium was the X factor in my workflow to allow me to properly piano roll and midi out each section of the track- basically. I’m being a boomer and needed a piano roll. Ironically Xequence2 did not work well for me- but Helium has been a lifesaver in terms of completing tracks.

LK is not even close to the dRambo, for the simple reason that LK tracks are detached from the LK Keyboard or any other LK control modules. All those controls do not correspond with the selected track and designated MIDI channel. The same thing is when you route other external keyboards and controls. It's simply impossible to work like that and feel you have something close to a proper DAW.

@Luxthor Well - Trying to hack AUM into being a classic DAW is probably not the best idea in the first place, is it?

Yeah, tell this to the OP. ;) We already know that AUM is a DAW-less music-making haven!

    💯

I should probably give AUM another shot soon. @iOSTRAKON made it look so easy. Then again there is Loopy Pro as well. :)
