Problem with a USB audio interface — but only in GarageBand

Has anyone else run into this? I've got a FiiO E10K headphone amplifier that works fine with my iPad using a USB-C to A adapter. Except, in GarageBand the audio becomes a glitched-out mess. The fact that it seems to be recognized and utilized just fine by iOS itself makes me think that this might be a solvable issue, but I'm not sure how.

Comments

  • This could old be a potential sample-rate issue as well?
Hopefully GarageBand will get an update when iOS13/iPadOS drops...

  • Something interesting I just noticed is that the glitching (stuttering, really) is visible in GarageBand's VU meters. I'm not sure exactly what that indicates about the problem, but maybe that it's not sample rate after all?

  • Strangely the problem has disappeared after closing GarageBand and opening again, which I could swear I've tried before. So far I haven't been able to get the problem to come up again.

I guess you can call this a verification that the FiiO E10K headphone amplifier is fully compatible with the iPad Pro.

Scratch that. I was away from the iPad for a bit, it went to sleep, and upon returning to it the bug was back. I went through the same process (close GarageBand, open it again, start a new project) without success. Neither did restarting the iPad help.

The only difference I can think of is that when it resolved earlier, I was in the middle of remotely sharing the iPad's screen with Apple support. Wouldn't that be something, if the screen sharing resolves the problem? I did a search to see if I could test it myself with a screen share of my own, but it seems that it's a capability that only Apple tech support has.

    Edit:
I went ahead and got Apple on the line again to test the screen sharing theory. That was not the case. After getting a senior support specialist on the line, we found we were able to solve it by entirely offloading the GarageBand app, restarting the iPad, and then downloading GarageBand again. Quite a process, and we'll see if it works again next time (if) the bug crops back up.

Just leaving this update in case anyone else arrives here via Google search (like the Apple tech did while I was on the line :)).

    Edit 2:
Wouldn't you know it, the "offload, reboot, re-download" process no longer works.

  • Hi Mogue, hope all is well :)
Just out of interest are you powering the FiiO directly from the iPad?. Like you I have had some success with my iPad Pro 1st gen and my FiiO E10K but only with a powered usb hub. Basic replay of music from apps like Apple Music work and sound great, however DAWs seem to really struggle. GarageBand gets very confused and in my case won’t even playback, tap play as much as you like it won’t respond yet other functions do respond such as moving faders. It’s exactly the same with Auria Pro. However, Cubasis 2 works great with no issues at all BUT only when Bluetooth/AirPlay is enabled in the Audio settings, strange considering the 24bit audio is NOT being AirPlayed !!!???
Let me know how you are getting on.
