Yah, the multithread and ram issues are probably the cap eh?

I’m very aware of the conventions. I know how to use AP I just don’t enjoy the feel of it. It’s somewhat intangible but it just feels slow and klunky in use. For me.

Sure, I don't think it's slow personally, but I do agree that it's not got a slick UI like NS2. NS2 is a more fun app to use, but Auria is more powerful. It will be interesting to see what happens when NS2 gets audio tracks, and whether the audio capabilities will be enough to compete with Auria.

And if Logic ever did appear on iOS and would be first in the queue to check it out, but in the meantime I can get stuff done with what already exists. YMMV of course.

Will see when the time comes but I am pretty sure BM3/NS2 tag team will be my approach. Sounds like NS2 audio tracks are quite a ways out though so who knows what comes in by then.

  • So there is some big Mac/iPad CPU convergence thing on the horizon, no? Isn’t this the multithreading megaboomy thingy that will blow the doors open on this whole party? There has been plenty of vague chatter (some by music app devs!) of a Mac<——->iOS yadda yadda... it’ll happen, just takes time.

Yeah, I was hopeful that NS2 would be a full-fledged DAW by this point, but he is just one guy (dev) and to be honest, no program is keeping me from finishing anything anymore.

(For some reason, i've been watching this whole newfound BM3 thing with interest. I gave up a ways back but I watch this discussion as if there is something in it for me. Hmmmm ....)

  • I can get stuff done on iOS, sure.

But There are big chunks of stuff that I much prefer doing in Logic or require lots of farting about which can get tiring on iOS.

Your example of loop to selection is a good one but i just want to be able to drag the little bugger :-)

I like having many ways to do the same task and use many approaches in Logic depending on what part of the process I’m in. I find it frustrating that I have to find work arounds when there should be a much easier/less klunky way.

I think the fact that I have bought AUM, Auria Pro, NanoStudio 2 and BeatMaker 3 to go with GarageBand and still haven’t been able to settle on one of them speaks volumes.

On desktop I have Logic Pro.

I am obviously very aware that some people are more than happy with apps such as AP on iOS though and I have no issues with that at all. I wish it worked better for me to be honest.

I bought AP as it can do stuff that no other app I own can do and I can see it as the last app in the chain. But I don’t like it for creating which is a slight disappointment but no big surprise.

I’ve been a brainwashed convert of BM3 from super crashy day 1 and only took two months off for NS2. Now that I have Fabfilters and a 10.5 Pro BM3 has become my music hub where current tracks live. No longer is desktop the Mothership. (It is a sound module/sample source/surgical editor/batch processor/creative fx machine). As for stability now I crash once every five hours or so but then I do know where the crashes live.

  • I have the impression about too much time talking about what's missing in iOS and too little doing music...
I can do most music on garageband mac than any iOS DAW...
also I can do more pre-songs in BlocsWave than Garageband but I will need again desktop for Live (or garage/logic)

Sure there are options in iOS but mouse is still a must. I will try with iPadOS at mini4 but again I still see too many posts about what's coming meanwhile I do music... and I'm not sure about power/features. If I need an iPad pro for LogiciOS I will expend less buying an old macbook and probably be faster, less limited and cheaper...
Or Apple disrupts or this is no sense for pro studio duties.

    BM3 is huge for me.
My three top DAW thingys are BM3, MTS, FL Mobile. Top as in most productive

I like the direct project exchange to PC of MTS and FL Mobile, speed of FL Mobile (also has fx reordering, and cool rack style instrument/fx approach) but BM3 - on 10.5 also - is the king high iOS playground for me (next to S_nV_x)

Been digging deep into BM3 and was wondering, when it goes desktop (MAC, as reported) will it be the ‘standard’? Sure it has some issues that should have been ironed out by now, but it’s hands on approach is growing... Looking forward to this update..

BTW.. will really love to see more work done on the ‘scene mode’.. recording midi and audio more easily, snapshots with Maschine type LOCK feature... But it is really a futuristic DAW..

    Haha that was a bingo!

  • There are practical reasons why DAWs aren't in slightly better shape on the iPad -- the biggest one is pure economics. It took decades of development for desktop DAWs to get where they are. While there hasn't been a lot of change lately, there was a lot of development from when the first DAWs started appearing through the early 00s. And Ableton Live has come a long way since it first appeared on the scene.

A lot of that development happened during an era when DAWs cost around $999 for the premium ones and $599-ish for the second-tier. That era funded a lot of development. If the prices had dropped to where they are now, we'd be in a different place.

You can't just translate a desktop DAW to iOS -- it would be a lame DAW for lots of reasons. So, it will take time for developers to get it right -- and there aren't a lot of financial incentives. DAWs require a lot of programming and testing.

For very good reason, most professional recording and mixing does not happen in cafes and in bedrooms. As fun as it is to sketch and come up with some tracks, if you are recording with mics, you need a good space to record in. No matter what you are tracking, your mixing needs to be done in a properly treated room with good studio monitors.

There will be SOME people that will come up with great stuff outside the confines of the studio -- but that is a small group of people. Sales to them is not going to fund something on the scale of Ableton Live or Logic. And those people are already making use of what we have -- which is AMAZING if you come to think about it.

But, since the bulk of pro money is (quite reasonably) going to be spent on tools to help them where they make their money, there just isn't a ton of reason for commercial developers to throw their money at technologies that will take years of refinement.

That is very different from effect and synth developers because those are tools that pros and semi-pros and amateurs can all get use of when away from the studio.

How little money is there to be made developing a full-scale DAW for mobile? So little that even the people that are in the game are not making a living just from their app sales. And that lack of revenue is not because their apps aren't good. It is a reflection of the fact that the people that shell out big money for their DAW setups -- aren't motivated to switch to mobile -- they have to be in the studio (even if it is their home studio) for most of what they do.

There are lots of people that want a pro DAW on the iPad -- but most of them are not going to invest the kind of money to justify millions of dollars of development.

There are other reasons why it isn't super-sensical for something on the scale of Logic to be on the iPad, but that is a topic for another day.

@espiegel123, IMO (and my limited understanding) you have said it better than anyone I have read on the forum to date. These regular discussions about iOS DAWs, when not stimulated by controversial statements, get better and more incisive with each iteration. One could argue that as these regular meetings of the minds take place the landscape is changing (with the introduction of the FabFilter apps, for example, or the ability to buy an iPad with 6gb of RAM for another ....New iPad Pro without a headphone jack but with a terabyte memory). How far are we from 8? And isn’t that kind of the entry level power of a lap or desktop?

I know I am pretty uninformed technically, but if even I can see it... well, the deep thinkers here must see a lot more on the horizon. And maybe the whole investment paradigm is not as dire for progress as predicted,

This. Tell me a basic daw feature that Auria is missing. Further, it’s got a lot of features my current cheap pc daw doesn’t have. And you have all of those Fabfilter plugs available at a fraction of the desktop counterpart too.

Manual punching/Punching on the fly. And now for some reason, when you play an instrument track using an external midi keyboard, you'll hear all of the other instrument tracks playing what you play on the keyboard at once unless you turn off incoming midi to the other tracks.

  • Tell me a basic daw feature that Auria is missing.

    Multiple monitor support.

  • Aaaarrrgghh.

I sometimes come here to vent instead of making music Because the stupid app won’t actually let me make any bloody music!

Case in point, I’ve just spent an hour or so on a track I’ve been playing with for a while and NS2 is having yet another fit.

When I’m nearing the end of a project and think ‘that’ll do’ i tend to have racked up multiple versions of a project. But NS2 just doesn’t like me opening and closing projects.

But I want to be able to refer to older versions to find out where I stated to completely ruin the track.

But NS2 won’t let me. After a few minutes projects start to become silent. Completely silent. Every track. At this stage one AU will be to blame as Ns2 won’t be able to load its editor. And K7D silences any track it’s on until you delete and reload it. And then when it does load properly after yet another restart kronecker and lorentz are playing the wrong sounds. So I have to go back to another version to save the patches so I can reload them. But then that sets off the whole crashy silent thing all over again.

Oh and then ns2 won’t load the au editor for Ruismaker Noir. Noir crashes a lot in ns2. The time before it was kronecker that wouldn’t load. Before that poison 202.

Thing is the project works absolutely fine until you close and open another project. My guess is a memory leak somewhere. Just a wild guess mind.

Oh, And I made sure not to use Grind, quatromod or dubstation as Ns2 doesn’t like those AUs in particular.

I gave myself a challenge to finish a track in ns2 from start to finish as I’ve had so many problems with it using grind, dubstation and quatromod. So I left all of those out and got a different kind of crash nightmare.

The first person to tell me to stick to stock plugins as they’re so much better goes on to my otherwise empty ignore list! ;-

I’ve wasted countless hours with its nonsense.

I wish the makers of AUM would make a DAW with a timeline. It’s the only daw like app I have other than GarageBand which doesn’t seem to fall over if you look at it wrong. But I can only get so far with it before my brain goes fuzzzy and wants to see a timeline.

And this rant in a nutshell is why I don’t think iOS is anywhere close to the Mac when it comes to DaW like apps. I can’t remember the last time I ever had a crash in Logic.

    Aaaaaarrrrggghhhh.

(Heat of the moment Rant over.)

I probably shouldn’t post this. But sod it. I’m going to.

Bad memories. I mostly had this stuff with Apparillo but it cleared up after Sugar Bytes updated it.

A one point, to load a new project, I got into the habit of creating a new empty project and closing out NS2. Then rerunning NS2 and loading the project I wanted. Not too sure if it helped but I went there. Desperate times etc.

Maybe my comment wasn’t enough clear then. I’m not going to expend money on new iPad pro for iPadOS where I can buy an old mac for the half money and have full logic on it. Period.

I must put the period. It makes it more clear probably...

I still see people ranting but nobody totally sure about iOS DAW future or even... making better, faster, stronger... music on it.
Garageband hated the most and the better implemented at the same time lol
Then I remember we are in audiob.us such distopic place (and niche) which Apple just don’t care (they don’t care about IAA, go figure...) and I remember why I enter less and less... :(

I’m sad to say this but iOS was never a pro place for music making. IPadOS could it be somewhere in the future but macOS is the place ATM (the less bad option we can say...)

If we need iPad pros without true tools at mbp prices the problem isn’t the ecosystem or devs... it’s its users. Apple know that market shift and put high the pro tier (mac pro), lower the consumer tier (iOS) and nuts the middle tier (iPadOS) related to hardware (dongles) and people still get trapped by this no sense...

Some hardware brands are trying to fill the gap (akai for DAW, Denon/Pioneer for djing...) but macOS/iOS as asset has still some room and their crappy ARM based OS aren’t powerfull enough to give true competition even to bloated iOS (just search about Akai Force users to see some different deception).
So in the end is up to the user find workable workflow where compromises are fair enough (less tracks vs finite number of crashes until get mad) but trying to get full Ableton (with max8 lol) or full Logic (when Alchemy gone from iOS to macOS first to came back to garageband iOS later) is being too optimistic.

I will love be wrong but Apple know they can’t offer it and they don’t want to. It’s better to sell updated (and overpriced) mac mini for running mainstage (which in the end the live player for Logic) so how are they going to release something like that for iPadOS?

They should but probably the wouldn’t.
