My most used Synth Apps are 5 years old | haQ attaQ
It's been 5 years since these two Synth apps came out for iPad and I am still using them. They're simply my most favourite ones when it come to iOS synth apps. But what is it that makes so good? What is it about them that I like so much? Well, In this haQ attaQ episode I am attempting to explain what it is that keeps me coming back to these two synths and also why you might want to get them yourself.

Interesting video Jacob. I liked Thor's various keyboard and input assist options - the ribbon thing with the "strum" pad. Amazing how good some of those older apps are.
I remember being amazed when Animoog came out and how good it sounded (and it was only $1 for the first week) .
Thumbjam, Samplr - lots of old apps that are still as useful today as when they were released - even if they are not AUs.

I have no idea ... haven’t heard anything about an AU version of Thor. But yeah it would be awesome if they did make that.

I’m curious. How are you using Alchemy now? Did you save it as a stand alone on an older iOs device or did you move over to the GarageBand version?
I agree about the Thor keyboard. I love how player friendly it really is. But I gotta say that I like the keyboard in Nave to. Especially that Drawbar “organlike”-type mode. I also enjoy that it has those X/Y Pads. Yeah both synths have nice performance tools.
I select “remind me later” every few days on my iPad for quite a few years now. Have almost typed in my passcode a few times late at night, have had a few nightmares about this happening!

Given their lackluster efforts lately on iOS, I don’t really take that with much optimism.
the rack VST apparently works with all the third party racks - seems like a container/emulator of sorts, so perhaps not requiring or having anything to do with the individual racks having to be updated or converted to VST/AU format.
It would be incredible though if they ported the entire rack vst to iOS AU - perhaps selling individual racks via IAP or offering them in a bundle. I’m not holding my breath for either, but that seems more likely than them going through all the effort to convert Thor at this point.
I know what you mean. I’ve almost typed in my password many times too. I really don’t like that pop-up.
I’m going to have to get another device sometime soon just so that I can stay somewhat current with iOS updates on my channel. I’ll most likely just keep my iPad Pro ar iOS 12.

You bring up good points. In the end any company would have to ask themselves if its going to be worth the effort to convert/update stuff etc. its even harder with iOS apps.
Developers usually have a time span of about two-three week to sell New apps. After that its hard to get any sales at all. Since Thor is quite Old in ”app-years”, I’m not sure it’ll be worth the effort unless they charge for the update. They probably have to put somone to work for a few months to do that conversion (guessing here). Yeah ... I don’t know.

I have all the iOS 11 apps on the iPhone SE now, noticed the iPad 6th gen are getting very affordable second hand so hope to get a turbo charged device soon.
I will be revisiting Thor, thanks to this video! I bought it years ago but haven’t explored the possibilities.
i deleted most IAA only apps (exceptions: Effectrix,iSpark and iProphet) but especially Thor is a salty reminder.I do love it but for pure synth fun i'm covered well with AU. But it has such a beautiful interface to work with...might install it again even if i don't use it
I love both of these synth, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE if these and Animoog were made into Audio Units , it would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been looking at second hand older iPads myself. Thinking I’m going to get at least one more older iPad to keep older apps on. I’ll also be sticking with iOS 12 on my main Pro device. So I’ll need to get a new one for iOS 13 and up at some point. But man, they’re not cheap.
That’s the thing with most of these older apps, they’ve where made with the whole surface in mind. I really like that. For me there’s always space for both. I use AU’s when doing production work, but for performance stuff I just want full screen stuff.
Thanks @jakoB_haQ got me opening up Thor again after way too long. Some of my old patches were pretty good and I made a few more, such a flexible synth!
A thread started by @echoopera got me to try BM3 and now I understand how to sample from Thor into the pads, it’s a killer combination.
We all need old dead machines. Seriously.
Maybe I should make a video about this with that title “we all need dead old machines”. It’s an interesting topic.
