Midi file player for audiobus

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a good midi file player than can work as an input in audiobus?

Comments

  • There are quite a few, actually.
More details of what you need would yield better suggestions for apps.

  • Audioshare

If you don't have it, go and get it.

MIDI Sketch opens files ( single channels / voice ) edits and plays back audiobus compatible.

  • Do you mean just sending midi out, or making noise too?

    If the former, then Photon.

  • Thanks All. Wim, I like the look of Photon - does it fully integrate with Audiobus i.e. if you press the play button in Audiobus, Photon starts playing?

An AU like the session view of Ableton, but solely MIDI would be cool. With the ability to bulk import/drop tons of MIDI files and without leaving the grid view mute/solo channels, reverse, randomize and repitch parts.

Oops. Sorry, I didn't see this until now.

Yes. It's configurable. You can have it start with the host transport or independently. You can also choose to have the loops sync to measures or not. There are some more advanced options too, such as chaining of loops, with configurable number of loops each.

Photon does have a bit of a learning curve, but really mostly only on the recording side. For just loading and playing back midi files it's pretty straightforward.

  • BTW, Xequence 2 is a full-featured midi sequencer with excellent midi file loading, playback, and editing. It's a separate app, but has good integration with Audiobus.

Photon is very limited as far as editing goes, if that's a concern.

I’ve been looking for something similar.

What I’d like is to be able to browse MIDI files in one app and then send the MIDI from the file being played to whatever synth I want.

I think it would be great to quickly audition different files in projects without dragging them individually onto a timeline.

I don’t necessarily need to edit or create MIDI, just play it, preferably with a single tap.

I figure if anyone knows a similar workflow it would be you all.

As far as I remember, bismark m16 (from the developer of bs-16i) can do that

Thanks! It looks like this might work well.

Can anyone confirm that this app can be loaded as IAA or AU?

I just tried, it cannot. Also, for my needs for a Midi player, I found it to be a little too difficult to use - I ended up with Sweet Midi player, which is great, but also cannot be loaded in AB.

You can drive other synths using Core MIDI though, from both of them.

There”s coming something like that, as an Audio Unit.
But currently it is in beta state...

The problem is the file requester dialog, as this may produce problems inside several host apps. As reported, the file dialog may open wrong places or even crash some hosts, if invoked by an audio unit.

    It looks very interesting 😊

    That does look interesting.

I’m kind of surprised that something doesn’t already exists with this functionality.

LK has Matrix Mode, which is sort of like that. Since it's a Live controller. When you run it in MIDI mode, though, I would assume it could work like that.
