  • No, Audiobus doesn't need an Internet connection to work - all of that information is built in for most apps. But it does need an Internet connection to get information about new apps. This is a limitation in the OS, beyond our control, but I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed.

  • Maybe other apps do, maybe they don't. But they certainly does not stop working if they can't.

I would suggest that other apps do indeed phone home. It's just you may not know they are doing it. Sebastian and Michael are at least transparent about it and it seems to me that they have been straightforward and honest in response to your questions.

IMHO of course. Have a nice day:-)

  • Information about new apps. You mean the Apps tab?

@enc Vanilla (this forum's software) is a full-on forum! =) Is there any functionality in particular you're missing?

In many ways the current message board style is quite refreshing... fast turn around of threads/topics stopping things from getting stale... but it would be cool to have the different sections and layout you find on most other forums.... you know the stuff... individual sections for DAW's, synths, drum machines, audio interface, controllers, general off topic chat, For sale, users demo tracks etc etc...

  • I would like to have an definitive answer. I feel there are stuff going on we don't know about.
I've asked about this internet connection before, but it was just brushed off.

I'm sorry, what exactly is your question?

  • It's 3 posts up, continuing a longer discussion, but I'll recap for you.

Why does audiobus need an internet connection, and why does it stop working without it, or when your poorly run database server is down?

Why does audiobus need an internet connection

It does not. We just update the list of compatible apps and their capabilities every 30 minutes to make sure they all show up in the correct slots after new compatible apps come out (which currently is about 1 new app per day).

, and why does it stop working without it, or when your poorly run database server is down?

That might be a bug, it definitely should not happen like that. We're going to have a look at it.

You can always just manually launch Audiobus, then launch audiobus compatible apps manually (if they don't show up in the Audiobus app itself), then switch back to Audiobus.

Since you seem to be quite disappointed, please follow this link to find out how to get a refund for Audiobus: http://www.labnol.org/software/itunes-app-store-refunds/13838/

'Updating a list of compatible apps', would that be the Apps tab?

  • edited February 2014

Not directly, that's the compatible apps list.

I guess we don't have a clear name for the pop-over that appears when you tap the input, filter or output slot. What's showing up in the list of apps in there is dependent on what's in Audiobus' database.

But both lists depend on the Audiobus database. Only we ship a version of the apps list offline in the Audiobus app - which of course is outdated as soon as a new app becomes compatible. That's why the Audiobus app updates this list every 30 minutes.

So Audiobus calls home every 30 minutes, to get information about peoples already installed apps.
How's that for "not needing an internet connection"...

What ever information you need Audiobbus to fetch every 30 minutes should already be in the dowloaded music/effects/host app.

No, Audiobus checks with our server about NEW compatible apps so it can offer them as an option whenever you want to set up a connection. We're downloading new information from Audiobus' servers.

How's that for "not needing an internet connection"...

It's exactly that. It does not need an internet connection. It would work without it but it wouldn't be as convenient for users.

Yes. Checks for NEW compatible apps, that I've already downloaded and installed.
Why doesn't this compability info come with the apps?

Because they'd either have to run and broadcast this information or it would have to be in a file that was accessible to other apps. The latter has some downsides for example information cannot be changed on the fly if necessary.

But I don't feel like I can soothe your rage about this. If you want to be angry about a design decision of ours you can. Nobody is forcing you to use Audiobus.

I apologise if for some reason I have insulted you in any way.

    Have you tried whistling @Brad_Moore?

Some things in life are bad

They can really make you sad

Other things just make you swear and curse

When you're chewing on life's gristle

    Don't grumble, give a whistle

And this'll help things turn out for the best...

    And...

So when "information needs to be updated on the fly", and I don't have an internet connection, what happens?

    Nothing.

  • Now that the sordid details of the conspiracy and scandal, that will be forever known as "Audiobusgate" are now in the open and resolved, it is perhaps time to move forward.

As the International Community struggles to come to terms with the revelations,(fearlessly exposed I might add), perhaps it is indeed time to look to the future.

I suggest that the product we love is so scarred that a re-branding is needed, even obligatory? I suggest therefore, that AB2 be called ET. This is of course if it too needs to phone home too.

Thank you and peace be with you all.
